Double Standard Re Dean

Ljay -- that's a great tweet, indeed.

Just because other companies haven't stepped up to this same level, doesn't make Food Network, Ballantine Books, WalMart, JCPenney, et al, wrong.

I think people need to speak up when other personalities make these kind of remarks. They need to hear from those that are incensed. Each and every time. I don't know who Tracey Morgan is (SNL?) But lots of "stars" don't have a single employer to be fired from, nor do they have merchandise deals to be let go from.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Tracy Moran had a starring role on 30 Rock for it's entire run. Also has been a spokesperson for many products. So when he made his remarks, his "employers' should have dealt with him.

Double Standard Re Dean

LOL. I told you I didn't know who he was! What products, may I ask?

Nabisco Wheat Thins come to mind. Also some sports related things. And I think a credit card company. You would recognize him if you saw or heard him.

Double Standard Re Dean

Hm. I think I know who you mean...but I don't remember him from any advertising (probably because I don't know him). I think the only reason I have any mental image is just the other day, when I awoke on the couch, an episode of 30 Rock was on. (I've never watched it.)

If Mel Gibson can still get a movie made, why shouldn't Paula Deen still be on the air? Her sponsors have every right to make that decision, but, the question of whether she is being unfairly or preposterously singled out for gross insensitivity is a legitimate one.

My own feeling is that this is similar to the Tiger Woods extravagances, where similar questions were thoughtfully raised about why in a we-love-the-Clintons America the country is going nuts over a man who likes to **** a lot of women outside of his marriage.

What about comedians like Chealsea Handler and Joan Rivers, whom I both adore, that make racial jokes all the time? I would never call them racists, because I believe telling a racial joke does not make you a racist or a bigot.

I agree with Bettyboy, this has gotten way out of hand. All that was needed was a heartfelt apology, a food network special with the Neelys and perhaps having Paula sponsor some sort of pro-tolerance campaign, something along the lines of: "I'm a proud southern woman, who like many of you was raised to look down upon African Americans, but decided to take a stand against racism, if I could do it so can you!." And voilĂ ... PR magic!

That would've silenced many of the haters, and her loyal fanbase won't really give a damn, because probably they're racists themselves. If Food Network really wanted to, they could have easily restored her image, they just chose not to.

Am I the only one annoyed by the misspelling of her last name? It's DEEN.

To me, context is the prevailing factor. Comedians aren't calling black people the N word to their faces. Nor are they doing it behind their backs (or if they are, we don't know about it).

Yes, rap artists and the like say the N word all the time.

I'm not really sure what the point of this thread is.
#34

Double Standard Re Dean

These comedians aren't trying to throw parties with their black employees dressed as house slaves.

Read the deposition. Deen's brother is also accused of implementing separate entrances for black and white employees in her restaurant.

I still don't get why people can't separate words from actions.

It is up to the particular companies that sponsor these stars as to what to do when they do something like this. Comedians are somewhat sheltered from this because their remarks could be seen as a part of an act, whereas Paula Dean's comments were not. Don't worry about her. With her upcoming book with millions already made in pre order, she will be back on TV in no time, after dropping out of sight for awhile.

There is also a major difference between a racial joke and a racist joke. Not at all the same thing.

For the life of me, I will never understand why white people get so bent out of shape about using the N word. Why does it matter if black people are "allowed" to say it- I think the real thing to be examined is why you feel the need to say it, if you're a white person.

Snafu -- the publisher bailed on the book. It will not be published anytime soon.

Just because others have not been punished, doesn't mean she should not be.

Truth be told, I think FN was considering not renewing Deen's contract and this was just the icing on the cake. Her ratings had dropped some 22%. Heck, none of her shows were even on in prime time anymore....and hadn't been in YEARS.

Weren't there separate BATHROOMS, too? (Maybe I misread.)

Allthatjazz, why wouldn't you call Chelsea Handler or Joan Rivers racist? Because you adore them? I have no problem calling either of those mean spirited bitches racists. They are racists. And for old time's sake, so is that greasy wop Lisa Lumpagnelli.

FWIW, I personally refuse to put any of my dollars toward anything that Mel Gibson is a part of. He is a despicable excuse of a human.

Because none of their previous actions have led me to believe that they are, on the contrary. In this case actions speak louder than words.

If I were to call them racist, I'd have to call every single comedian I've seen a racist.
#41

Double Standard Re Dean

But speaking is still an action. One can be a racist without actively discriminating against people- if you say racist things, you are a racist, regardless of your actions.

Why is Deen being raked over the coals while others are not?

She's low-hanging fruit and a safe target. She is perceived as being human kitsch. She's no advocate or activist, or fine talent, or really any sort of pioneer. She's someone who gets photoshopped riding a dog and whose cooking is one degree of separation away from a fried Oreo.

I am NOT condoning her actions or those who are criticizing her or otherwise punishing her. I do think it is a good question to ask, though. And this is not a commentary on "why can one group say something another cannot?!?!"- something I think is true and in many cases defensible in a cultural context.

Wonderful, but how can you be a racist without discriminating?

Kad, Maybe because Deen is the poster child for sweet and sassy southern old ladies who are stereotypically deemed racist.

With nonsense like "I is what I is," she is certainly doing nothing to dispel that notion.

^ Am I the only one who thought that was cute?
#46

Double Standard Re Dean

A racist is someone who holds racist views. Maybe Deen didn't explicitly discriminate against non-white people (though it certainly seems like she may have), but she still holds views and acts in ways, such as using the N word, that make her a racist. Racism isn't just discrimination.

#47

Double Standard Re Dean

I honnestly don't know if she's a racist or not, but even if she were, why should she be fired over her private views?
#48

Double Standard Re Dean

Except she isn't being fired for that. She is being sued for creating a racist and hostile work environment in her workplace, and she is getting flack for it. And besides, it's not as if she's keeping this views private if this lawsuit is happening.

Double Standard Re Dean

That's my biggest gripe about Dean's drama.

It's not that she said this word, it's that she did all this other stuff and people are focusing on this one small part of it. If what she, and Bubba, did are true, then HELL YES. Fine. Fire. Sue. Whatever.

Saying the "N" word isn't the problem.

Double Standard Re Dean

I honnestly don't know if she's a racist or not, but even if she were, why should she be fired over her private views?

She is being sued for PUBLIC discrimination and inappropriate racist behavior in the workplace against her African American employees.

Please ... try to read some of the facts.
