Posted: 6/29/13 at 2:16pmI'm puzzled what we're supposed to do about Robert Byrd. He's dead, right? There's not much to fire him from or whatever is there? He's a perfect example- he was a racist, said horrible racist things (like Strom Thurmond- who also fathered a mixed race child) and went to his constituents and made his case- and won. I'm not sure what we're supposed to do- even if they were alive today. If it's wrong for Target to decide not to do business with Paula Deen wouldn't it be wrong to day racists can't run for office?

And Chick-Fil-A can serve God and bigots all they want.
And I am free to never eat there.
And Alec Baldwin is free to throw hateful words around in anger. And I am free to ignore him and his entire career.
And Paula is free to say what she wants. But she is not free to discriminate in the workplace.
That's not "freedom of speech" or any other kind of freedom. That's illegal.

Let's not forget the SEXUAL HARRASSMENT in the workplace, either.
Supposedly, others are stepping forward and agreeing with the plaintiff's claims.

Robert Byrd was not just voted back into office by his constituents, he was a leader of the Democratic Party and a "respected" (by those on the left) member of the Senate right up until his death.
Sen. Byrd's Democratic colleagues elected him to the positions of senate majority whip, senate majority leader, senate minority leader, and senate president pro tempore, which placed him third in the line of presidential succession behind the vice president and speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. He was not, by any stretch of the imagination, a marginal or fringe figure nor were the positions of authority he occupied merely the result of seniority.

Yes but again- he's DEAD NOW. What does it have to do with Paula Deen? You are FREE to NEVER VOTE DEMOCRAT AGAIN if it bothered you so much.
(Oh and if the "presidential succession" thing upsets you, Harry Truman was a member of the Klan too. )

I am so happy I don't have any racism in me.
It gives me such...smug superiority that really makes me a-glow.

I'm over the people who are over it. Sorry it didn't trend well enough with you.
Assuming your post is "ironic," and let's be clear, I'm not, I guess because everyone's a little bit racist (including me, including you), we shouldn't call others on their sh*t. We should just let them be. They "is what they is."
Way to go! Great attitude!

The world is a circle without a beginning,
And nobody knows where it really ends.
Everything depends on where you
Are in the cirle that never begins.
Nobody knows where the circle ends.
La la la,
La la la la la la.
And just because you think you're small,
That doesn't mean that you're small at all.
And just the way a tiny branch is like a tree to a twig,
To someone else you are big.
The world is a circle without a beginning,
And nobody knows where it really ends.
Woooa!
Everything depends on where you
Are in the cirle that's spinning around.
Half of the time we are upside down.
La la, etc.
And just because they say you're weak,
That doesn't mean you've a weak physique.
And even if they're partly right,
At least they're partially wrong.
To someone else you are strong.
And just because they say you're slow,
That doesn't mean that you're slow, you know.
And even if you're never first,
Compared to someone who's last,
They're sure to think you are fast.
The world is a circle without a beginning,
And nobody knows where it really ends.
Woooa!
Everything depends on where you
Are in the cirle that never begins.
Nobody knows where the circle ends.
La la, etc.
The world is a circle that never begins.
Nobody knows where the circle ends.
...and now we return you to your regularly scheduled thread topic already in progress...

"Yes but again- he's DEAD NOW. What does it have to do with Paula Deen?"
Nothing. But why do people get so upset about what she might have said 20 years ago when someone like Sen. Byrd was a racist almost his entire life? Despite his history of racism, the Democratic Party never EVER let him fall ---the exact opposite is true; they lifted him up on a pedestal and kept him there until his death, no matter what he did or said.

Why did all this come out? Because she (and her brother) are being sued for allowing a hostile, racist work force and sexual harrassment. Her use of the n-word is such a tiny piece of the puzzle.
She is being sued for the following:
•Black employees were required to use separate bathrooms and entrances from whites.
•Black employees were held to “different, more stringent standards” than whites.
•Hiers regularly made offensive racial remarks.
•Hiers made inappropriate sexual comments.
•Hiers forced Jackson to look at pornography with him.
•Hiers often violently shook employees.

Posted: 6/29/13 at 11:24pmMikey you have to be brain damaged or 14 years old to believe that- Byrd's racist past dogged him EVERY DAY of his life. Every election it was debated and discussed- even in his obituaries it was as much the focus as his career.

meh. romney was part of an organization (the mormon church) which, up until 1979, was officially racist. you could not be black and be a deacon or a church elder. he was an adult when this occurred. this all changed, of course, with the civil rights movement, when the firmament cracked open and elohim announced, 2000 years after the fact, that blacks are human after all. and this guy was a heart beat away from the presidency.
and the KKK is a evangelical christian organization, as it has always been. there is not one chapter that repudiates the supernatural.
what you can show in both instances, liberal or conservative, republican or democrat, religion makes people say and do wicked things they would never otherwise contemplate.
