Posted: 2/17/14 at 12:58amMy town did run out of salt. I live right on the border of another town. Like if I go down my road 1 way, I will be in the other town despite it being the same road. Apparently the side in my town is still icy and messy. My parents drove that way a couple of times today. I went the other way and that town did a wonderful job getting the roads cleared. I'm really scared to see what will happen if we get another bad storm. I'm already afraid of a school bus going down the road because my car did slip on a tiny spot on a road that was in good shape.

Posted: 2/18/14 at 9:10amWell, here we go again. Thankfully today wasn't so bad this time around. We're supposed to see temps in the 50's later this week and that's brings up a new worry. Flooding. I drive over a canal to/from work everyday and I happened to glance at it this morning - it was very high. Not sure how much of that was snow on top of the ice but it was close to bridge level.

Posted: 2/18/14 at 9:21amSupposed to get another 4-6" here today. The thing I hate is they cancel at the drop of a hat. But we have to use vacation time to get paid. It's one thing if you work in a factory and by taking a day out you end up making 800 less widgets that week...fine, dock me a day. But in my job, I still have to cram the same number of designs in this week, snow or not. So I'm doing the same amount of work in less time for less pay.

That stinks, artscallion. What do you do, if you don't mind me asking?
Some schools in my area are closed today while a good majority went with a 2 hour delay. I can't wait to hear some complaining from teachers at the open schools that they should have been closed today because they had off before all of the snow days started piling up. I know not all teachers are like that, but I sometimes wonder why some people become teachers because some just act like they deserve a lot of days off without putting in much work.

Marianne, I'm the Sales & Marketing Director for the performing arts complex at a college. So I still have the same ads, posters, programs and postcards I need to design. The same number of shows that need to be set up in the box office system. Everything I need to do this week, I still need to do, whether it's in 4 days or 5. And everybody at the college is hourly, not salary except the President and the VPs.
The good thing is that I get 5 weeks of vacation time a year. So I always have time to pull from. But folks who only get a week or two of vacation time probably run out and end up having days off without pay.

Posted: 2/18/14 at 11:16amI hear you on all accounts. I do agree that sometimes schools seem to close on the drop of a hat for practically nothing. Then again, I do not work in a school, so what do I know?

Posted: 2/18/14 at 11:21amI'm in the same boat, arts. If I can't make it in due to weather I lose my time. I get three sick days, one personal day, and two weeks vacation. I've already lost my personal day, a sick day, part of a vacation day, and a whole vacation day this year.

That sucks artscallion. I'm salaried *but* if a snow day is called my organization covers it. They do not touch out personal/sick or vacation banks, which is a good thing.
Your job sounds like fun though or at least artistically fulfilling.

Posted: 2/18/14 at 11:51amI love my job, Carlos. Which is why I put up with stuff like this.

^ That is a good thing! Sometimes you have to weigh up the pluses and the minuses and decide whether it's worth it overall. Loving your job sounds like a great enough reason to me!

Posted: 2/18/14 at 3:08pmAnd now I am really rolling my eyes. I was supposed to go out tonight to a meeting like I do every Tuesday night. They decided to cancel tonight because the roads might be icy later. Well, 80% of the snow has melted off of my car already and I have not even touched it. Most schools were on delays and very few closings. It will be about 25 degrees at midnight tonight, which is normal for this time of year. I think people have wimped out. I mean, I don't like driving in heavy snow or when the roads are bad, but sometimes you have to think about when cancelling is crucial or not. I don't think it was tonight.

Posted: 2/18/14 at 3:12pmThe melt/freeze cycle can create very icy conditions, so don't take anything lightly.

We got another 5" here in southern CT today. :-/ I'm kind of over it - my city is miserable at clearing up snow!
On the one hand I don't care because I work from home anyway, so I only need to commute 10' from my bedroom to my office. On the other hand, my BF still has to go to work and it also impedes us getting anything done later in the day.

What Brian said. I think we're going to see some ice tonight.
I just got an alert on my phone regarding freezing rain for tomorrow morning. So now we're looking at more ice on the road for our morning commute.
One bright spot in all of this for me is that I've been able to wear jeans to work on more than just Fridays lately.

Posted: 2/18/14 at 4:19pmWell they decided to cancel classes and shut down at 4pm in the height of the storm in the middle of rush hour traffic. traffic is at a standstill everywhere. Accidents all over campus and on the roads. I am NOT going out into this only to either get stuck somewhere, get in an accident or endure a 2 hour drive home. I'm staying at work at least til 6 or seven when things clear up. I guess it's cafeteria food for me tonight. Thanks Obama!

Posted: 2/18/14 at 4:21pmAnd this is all because they closed too easily over the past few weeks (four days!) So this time they were reluctant to close again. And now they cancel at the worst possible time because they have no choice.

Posted: 2/18/14 at 4:47pmHmm, I don't see any ice in my forecast. I guess I'm just finding it a bit ridiculous because I've gotten used to my road being a mess this winter. Like if I decided to stay home because of the mess everyday, I wouldn't be going anywhere ever.

Posted: 2/18/14 at 5:02pmI hear ya, Marianne. I live at the opening of a double cul-de-sac and my road is always a mess. I wouldn't leave until spring if I based anything on that lol

Posted: 2/19/14 at 12:37pmJust something to keep in mind for those dealing with a ton of snow. With gutters being full of snow and ice and also on the roof, double check around your windows and walls for potential water coming in. I discovered that in my bedroom when I went to bed. I heard some dripping in there and found my window sill and stuff around it a little wet. For me, it is just a tiny crack with a little dripping, so there isn't much I can do except for putting some towels or a bucket down to catch the water. It also isn't constant. But, this has never happened to me before, even with heavy rains prior to this winter.

Last night I was driving home from work when a snowball exploded across my windshield. Didn't do any damage but scared the life out of me. I am so ready for this winter to be over.
According to weather.com we could see more snow next week. Goody.
