So I guess I'm going to have to get myself an ereader. There's a ton of options now so I'd love to hear from you guys who have them which ones are the best.

I've done a lot of research because I was planning to buy one, and I think the Kindle is the best. My friend has one and loves it - the e-ink prevents glares and it's just like reading a real book.

Is there a "color" kindle? If a book has pictures (I read a lot of non fiction so there's often photographs in them) are those included in the ebook?

If you're looking for a screen with color, I would suggest a Nook Color instead of a Kindle.
EDIT: Also, I have only purchased an e-book once but I would assume that if a book had photographs, they would be included in the e-book.

I got the pink Sony one as a gift. The Sony one isn't wifi so if I want to buy a book I have attach it to my laptop. Nook & Kindle allow you to buy books from anywhere.

If you want color, then the Nook color is your primary option.
Between the Kindle and traditional Nook, the Kindle is lighter weight, and its battery lasts longer. I had a negative experience with taking the Nook on a 5 day trip - where the battery ran out after day 3. The Kindle's battery lasts a month.
That new streamlined Nook claims to have a battery life of 6 weeks or more.

I love my kindle...have had it over two years. Both my kids have one know as well.
Pix on the kindle will be in b&w but look great. The nook color is MUCH heavier and the battery life sucks.
rumor is that there are TWO new kindles being released in the next few months...no word if either of them will be color, however.

I was actually just awarded an iPad because I was a runner-up for a scholarship... Does anyone know if they make good e-readers? I haven't received it yet, but I've been thinking about buying a Kindle, too. I wonder if it's still worth it, if I'll have an iPad.
(Battery life isn't a problem because I would essentially only use it at home or on the bus to and from NYC.)

I would recommend a book-style case if the iPad doesn't come with one. My e-reader came with the type of case that you slide on and off. That could get lost if you're on the road. I like the ones that go on and stay on.
(Amazon.com has cheaper ones but I think this is so cute)
And Jordan - Amazon.com does have free Kindle apps for phones. I recall you saying you watch movies on your phone. Would you consider reading on it as well?

Eris, that is so cute! Expensive, but I guess since I'm not paying for my iPad I can use that as an excuse to buy an expensive case.

The Kindle is best for reading outdoors or on a beach.
The iPad is best for reading in bed.
The iPad and Nook are best for reading books (or magazines) that contain color.
And, Jordan--the iPad is the only one you will want to watch your Broadway videos on. But you will either have to convert them all to MP4 files so they can be viewed with the iPad Video app, or else you will have to download the VLC Player iPad app, which can view AVI files.

I have the Sony pocket sized reader, and I made the choice because carrying the device in my pocket was a dealbreaker for me. But as someone else said, you need to be connected to a computer to download books. That's not a problem for me, because I always have unread books waiting to be read.

I have a Nook (b&w, not color) and I love it! We use Kindles at work, and I just never liked the menus and the knobby button thing on them, so when it came time to buy my own I was looking at non-Kindle readers, I found the Nook's interface to be much more user friendly.
And I love the part where I can bring my Nook into a B&N store and read anything I want for free for an hour a day - more helpful than those 20 page 'free previews' where the first 10 pages are the table of contents when figuring out if I want to buy a book or not.
And free coupons for B&N cafes, and free Friday books, etc...
And the eInk on the Nook is great, I spent a week on the beach with my Nook and never had a problem reading out in the sun.

I bought my partner a Kindle for his birthday and he loves it. He wanted the bare bones, not toots and whistles, and didn't even care if it had ads on it. All he wants to do is read.

I got a Kindle and love it, even if it seems silly to have two readers, I would suggest getting a kindle anyway if just for reading outside.

I have an iPad. It comes with iBooks which is Apples version of the Kindle store but you can also download the Kindle app as well. I have enjoyed reading books with it. Using it as an ereader wasn't the main purpose of the purchase but it is definitely a perk.
The only complaint that I have is that it is difficult to see the screen when you are outside in direct sunlight.

So, through salivating over a Kindle and mentioning how much I hoped to get one for Christmas this year, the friend of a friend emailed me and asked for my address. Apparently she got a Kindle for Christmas and has never used it. She wants me to have it. It's on its way to Sweden.
I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth, so I haven't asked her which version it is. I am trying to get an idea for cases, since I assume it doesn't have one. Is a book/folder, silicone or sleeve type best? Any opinions? I can't spend very much and I don't want real leather.

Mine is this one. I know it's leather and you don't want that, but the style itself works well the kindle, so I'd recommend something like this (that's not leather).

It depends on the version. But you really want the one that has a reading light attached since the kindles are not back lit. http://tinyurl.com/3fg35mn It hooks into the kindle's power so you don't have to worry about the light running out.
Also, for those who were discussing color vs B&W, Kindle has just released a few new versions...the kindle fire with is color LCD (not e-ink) so you can subscribe to Bon Appetit magazine in all its glory...it also has a web browser...basically everything the ipad2 has except the video camera for half the price.
They also have a B&W touch screen version now.
Also, kindles are now hooked up to your local library system. You can go online to your library's website and "borrow" books. Love my kindle!

That was the style I was leaning toward, then I saw some pretty cute silicone covers. I am sure I will get this type in pink, only not leather.

I much prefer the style that Phyllis linked to. My Sony E-reader came with a foam sleeve that you slip on and off. Too easily lost IMO. Also, this kind protects the screen when it's in your bag or wherever (versus a silicone one). Another plus of having the kind that attaches to the e-reader is that you can clip a book light to it a lot easier than you can to the actual e-reader. This came in very handy for me during Hurricane Irene. For this same reason I would recommend a "stiff" one rather than just a fabric one since fabric can't hold the weight of a booklight.
