There's a nice writeup about the Marshalls International Showcase on usfsa.org, and there are photos to go along with it.
Not that this comes as a surprise, but, Timothy Goebel announced his retirement from competitive skating.
Yay! Oh, but he's turning pro now?
Michele Kwan is skipping this season to concentrate on school. See attached article.

Anyone watching US Nationals? The short programs are being shown on ESPN2 now.
It will be kind of strange this year: no Michele, no Sasha.

"no Michele"
That just doesn't seem . . . natural? possible? right?
"Time keeps on slipping . . ."
I'm a big figure skating fan and didn't realize it was on-now I'm watching.
I actually liked Emily Hughes' program better than Kimmie Meisner's (which was kind of dull [music wise] in my opinion).
I was never a Hughes family fan, but I think Kimmie's a little more graceful. At this point in time, I'm hard pressed to have a favorite female skater. I really like some of the new crop of Asian girls
I'm not a Hughes' family fan either (could it be I'm bitter about Sarah's win in 2002?). Katy Taylor skated a lovely performance, but so far, no one has the quality or presence that seemed so natural with Michele's skating.
You said it-Michele's a hard act to follow.
I knew there was a reason I liked you!!
Michele just radiated such joy when she skated. Her performances always gave me chills. So far, I don't feel anything with this new crop of skaters.
OK-that's it! Rachel Flatt is my new favorite skater-did you see her, Dottie?
Yes, I did. I loved her interpretation of the music. She's a lovely skater. I also think Alyssa Czisny (sp?) is a beautiful skater with wonderful spins. Now if she could be a little more consistent with her jumps.
Dottie, we're still on the same page. I couldn't think of the name before, but now you said it-Alyssa Czisny is also my new favorite!
She made an impression on me a couple of seasons ago. If she had the jumps, she would definitely be in the top 3. I think she has the cleanest lines of the bunch. And those spins!!
<----huge skating fan.........however, I have missed so much the last season or so.
I'm very happy to read that Naomi Nari Nam and her partner are a fraction out of the lead in pairs after the short program. Naomi was once a promising singles skater, but was sidelined a few years ago because of a hip injury. Nice to see she's back. Can't wait to watch tonight.
Coverage begins at 11:30pm on ESPN2.
wow, that's late. I'm glad I'll be home to see it though. Dottie, if it weren't for you, I may be missing a lot of figure skating!
Jane2, I most likely will start to watch but will tape the rest. The reason it's so late is some of it is being shown live.
I get all my information at www.usfsa.org
I think you and I were the only ones watching last night!!
Yeah, we may just as well be. For some reason, I put everything else aside to watch skating-weird!
hey fans...I did not see the last skaters last evening...didnt see Czisny.
I thought Liang should be in first, then Hughes, then Meisner. Liang's program was great and she skated better than she has in years...I actually got a bit teary!
Meisner's short music is a dirge...she doesnt have the personality to make it exciting. She was good, but left some on the ice.
That said, there is no Michelle, and we may not see another like her in many years to come. She had everything...she was the Patti LuPone of figure skating :)
(and Dottie, I adore Nari Nam and wondered what happened to her - so many skaters dont make it from one year to the next. Was so glad to see her skating doubles...tho you spoiled the outcome of the short for me a bit :))
Me, too!! Always have, always will.
A friend of mine in DC is even more enthusiastic as I am and we'll be watching together tomorrow night.
Doodle, the long program is tonight (live), so I'm not sure if they'll be showing the pair's short programs. Glad you know who Nari Nam is, not many people remember her.
Czisny skated beautifully last night, but she missed her triple lutz. If she hadn't she definitely would have been in the top 3.
There's some promising talent in the junior ladies category.
The pairs competition was good, but after listening to Jon Baldwin and his "supposed" mugging in Russia, I just don't particularly care for him all that much.
