As I was in Philadelphia yesterday, I finally was able to watch the women's free skate. Sasha is such a beautiful skater that I'm sorry she hasn't been able to put together a flawless long program. She is a lot more poised now when answering questions, as opposed to how she has been in the past.
Congrats, Kimmie Meisner. What a wonderful job she did.
I liked the interview with Katarina Witt and Debbie Thomas. I give credit to Katarina for her honesty. Heck, half the time I'm yelling at the television for the skaters to fall in order to insure my favorite wins!
The exhibitions were nice to see. I wish Emanuel Sandhu would skate like that all the time. He has such a wonderful line and dance quality to his skating. Stephane also had a nice exhibition program.
ok, i FINALLY have watched all the skating. i tried watching the men's when it was shown thursday night, but when they had been on the air for 30 minutes and only shown ONE short program in it's entirely, i turned the damn TV off and let the hard drive record. it was idiotic not to give regular coverage of the men's short, especially since the following night they were only on the air for ONE HOUR ... followed by a REPEAT of nationals ... what??!!?
a big highlight of the competition for me was the freedance of DUBREUIL & LAUZON. their program to SOMEWHERE IN TIME was absolutely gorgeous ... no, not the most technically demanding, but to me the most beautiful to watch and the most cohesive.
i was glad to see PANG & TONG win pairs. (although i still wanted to cut that fabric off their sleeves that made them look like sea eels.) also nice to see PETROVA & TIKHONOV go out with a clean skate, second place in the freeskate, and a bronze medal.
hurray for STEPHANE and his 2nd world title ... very much deserved ... exquisite movement on the ice. (and a happy goodbye to that paint-splotted zebra costume.) good to see JOUBERT skate so well. (and to see that he had the good sense to cut his hair.)
and the ladies winner? all i can say is AWESOME. KIMMIE reminded me of MICHELLE when she won her first worlds ... still immature but technically wonderful and with her own budding style. good for her!
i knew kimmie was going to rise to the top before she was expected to. i love her steadiness. sasha just made me cry. i guess it reminds me of those moments when i have sabotaged myself and didn't just grab my dreams.

How did the American pairs not place?
I was annoyed with that too ...since so many top pairs teams had falls. I guess they just do everything else so well that they can rack up the points. Bummer. But I was very happy that Inoue and Balwin were so fantastic!
rena and john never get high component scores. maybe they would if john would lose 10 or 15 pounds. (did i really say that?)
I watched Michelle's exhibition skate from the 1996 World's (the year of her first gold) and she was simply beautiful and amazing. Her maturity and artistry at age 15 still surpasses many a skater today. Watching it gave me chills and made me very sad about her injury this past season.
it's going to be very interesting to see what michelle decides to do!
Thanks so much CTurtle!
Kristin and Tinkerbelle - what a treat!
glebb, you are so welcome! and here's a kiss on your tush just to prove it ...
This just in from the USFSA website:
One week from today the biggest names in U.S. Figure Skating will take to the ice for the last event of the 2005-06 season. The 2006 Marshalls U.S. Figure Skating International Showcase in Greenville, S.C., will feature Michelle Kwan, Sasha Cohen, Kimmie Meissner, Evan Lysacek, Johnny Weir, Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto, among other U.S. and international athletes. The April 11 event will include two exhibition pieces performed by each athlete. The event will be broadcast on ABC on April 15 from 3-5 p.m.
wow ... i knew about the event ... but i didn't realize it was being held in SC ... i wonder if i could still get tickets? (and a day off the following day??)
Kimmie Meisner is about to skate on the Today show.
thanks for the tip! i wish i had been there to see that live this morning

It was actually very disappointing, so you didn't miss much. She more or less skated around the rink and fell on the one and only jump (double axel) she attempted.
well, she did some dance moves we've never seen from her before ... but still doesn't have the stretch/line of a world champion.
Kimmie is def. not ready to hold the World Champ title, but that is what she is...Olympic years are often like this.
BTW, remember, Maria Butyrskaya was world champion...
I missed that year, thankfully. I give her credit for sticking around as long as she did, but she was just dreadful.
I loved her for that Dottie. I hated her skating (especially because with good technique her body would've had a great look on the ice.)
Her attitude was always great. She never blamed anyone but herself and even smiled when she fell.
Remember when she was carjacked and still competed?
I do remember the carjacking incident. I think she used to design her own costumes. Her choice in music to skate to was just plain bad.
How she ever beat Michelle Kwan is beyond me.

damn, garrett was hot in that see-through mesh shirt ...
Did anyone watch the Marshall's Invitational on Saturday afternoon? Did Michelle Kwan skate?

Yes she did! She didn't do any jumps, which is definitely for the best because she's still recovering from her injury, I would imagine, but it was still a treat being able to see her on the ice again.
