Stories like this make me so soul-sick I cannot look at the world clearly.
I feel like putting on POLLYANNA, and watching Agnes Moorehead help Hayley Mills get a doll at the Go Fish booth at the fair. I need to see someone celebrate childhood, a dying entity in this culture.

This makes me absolutely nauseous. My heart goes out to the victim and his family. The 5 boys need to see some hard consequences.
and yet another reason why some people should not be allowed to breed.
really we need to enact licenses for couples to be allowed to have children. I just cannot believe from well-adjusted, and happy homes could do this.
He goes in for a skin graft today.
Update
I think that might've been from a couple of weeks ago, the grafts? (Or I don't know it could have been more grafts today, but I know I was reading about grafts a couple of weeks ago.)
Today's update in the Sun Sentinel says that prosecutors only have until Nov 12 to decide to try the suspects as adults or not; if they're to be tried as juveniles they'll be released from custody.
And if you wanna read something to really make you roll your eyes, the lawyer for one of the suspects talks about the poor suspect having to move out of the area and be home-schooled "for his safety." I was disappointed there was no "he's such a gooood boy" in there.
Deerfield burn suspects will be released unless charged as adults, prosecutors say
Oh wow, another disappearing post.
Yea, the skin grafts link was from 10/20. Here's the one I posted a little while ago that didn't appear:

"Michael Brewer's parents, Valerie and Michael Brewer Sr., issued a written statement through the hospital last week. They are not granting interviews."
That's certainly something new and different in today's age. I don't want to imagine what any of them are experiencing. Although, I must shamefully admit that I've imagined a couple of things that could - or should - happen to those five other aberrations of nature.
9. Make a big deal out of the family meal.
This is something I struggle with. I'll set the table and put out the food only to have people pick up their plates and go sit down in front of the tv.

Who's in charge? Go turn it off.

Eris, can't you say something like:
I know it's hard to get family time since life is so busy with work and stuff. I think it would be nice to be able to sit and have a meal with the family and have conversation, whether it be about how our day was, some troubles, etc. I think it would help all of us and become a closer knit family. I think about people who have lost loved ones without a minutes notice and then wish they would have spent more family time together.
Then just leave it at that and see what happens/what they say.
Those boys need to be charged as adults and I hope the parents beat their a**es when they got home. That was such a stupid thing they did. I wonder what their parents are teaching them. I think parents need to go back to beating their kids when they don't want to listen or do something wrong. When I was younger my mom use to beat me and my other siblings if we didn't listen or did something we weren't supposed to do. In a weird way im thankful for that actually because It put some discipline and respect in us.

Wasn't there a law or some kind of debate about punishing your kids and how much physicality you can use?
There are thousands of kids who have grown up in households where beating was not used as a punishment, and they are respectful, kind, successful people.
Yes, of course, there are kids who were beaten and still have grown up to be respectful.
Some kids just do thing for the "fun" of it or the thrill. Definitely NOT okay. The way they were/are raised does not always justify a child's actions.
Now, we all have different types of definitions, but "beating" is not something any parent should be doing to their child. "Beating" to me means 'to strike violently or forcefully and repeatedly.' MAYBE a slap on the tush could be a punishment but NOT beating. When parents beat children, maybe that's the driving force that gives permission to the kid that it's an okay action.
Not saying what's right or wrong here (and I know it's a different, more serious, type of situation here), but I don't think the key to stopping this kind of behavior is for parents to beat their children.

I had never heard of this until now, it's simply horrible. I listened to the 911 recording and I'm at a loss for words. I hope all those little bastards are charged as adults... a 13 year old knows what happens when you set a kid on fire. There's no excuse.
This reminds me of something that happened in my town when I was in elementary school. A few middle school kids (13 or 14, I think) carved "Whimp" into a boy's back with a razor blade. I forgot about it till now and have no idea what happened to the boys... I'm gonna try to find out.

And then there are those who are beaten as children and grow up to be emotionally unavailable and treat their own children like crap.
Reading that was taking a punch in the gut. I was just thinking about him the other day. Even if he does survive, I imagine there would be severe scarring for the rest of his life.

And now a sick, sick prank:
Detectives say witnesses saw Brewer, consumed in flames, run about a hundred yards, tear off his shirt and jump into a swimming pool.
Brewer's screams can be heard on a 911 call from the October 12 incident. Doctors say he was burned on about 65 percent of his body.
Detectives have returned to the Brewer house, after two dolls were found in the swimming pool. The male and female dolls had been melted together, head to feet.
"At this point, we're thinking it's a sick joke, said Jim Leljedal, a spokesman for the Broward County Sheriff's Office.
"It's being classified as criminal mischief, but we'd like to know who's responsible," he said.

Charges were filed today- three suspects (the one who allegedly was the ringleader, the one who allegedly poured the alcohol, and the one who allegedly flicked the lighter) charged as adults, no bond. The other two suspects let go with no charges filed.
No bond for three teens charged as adults in Deerfield Beach burning case
adding: the Florida Sun Sentinel that I linked to above ^^ is saying that no charges will be filed against the other two:
Prosecutors declined to file any charges against Jeremy Jarvis, 13, and Steven Shelton, 16, who were accused in their initial arrests of being "part of the group" that surrounded Brewer.
but ABC News is saying that juvi charges will be filed against them:
The two others facing lesser counts of aggravated battery, Jeremy Jarvis, 13, and Steve Shelton, 15, will be charged as minors and, according to Miami's ABC affiliate WPLG, will be released into the custody of their parents this week, per Florida state law.

That is a relief! When I saw that this thread had been bumped, my stomach tied itself in knots because I worried that he had died.
