Posted: 10/4/06 at 11:13amAuggie, that is exactly my trepidation about this entire situation. When I'm reading conservative analysis of this situation, I feel like I'm back in 1982 or earlier. Remember that link from the you-know-what Web site that RobbO posted several months ago, the 1950s PSA "Boys Beware" warning them about predatory homosexual men? Looks like many people have yet to move beyond that stereotype, and this gives them a reason to voice those very backward views.

Kirk Fordham says he alerted Hastert's office of Foley's behavior in 2004
WASHINGTON - A senior congressional aide said Wednesday he told House Speaker Dennis Hastert's office about worrisome conduct between former Rep. Mark Foley with teenage pages more than three years ago, long before officials have acknowledged becoming aware of the issue.
Kirk Fordham made his comments to The Associated Press in an interview as a Kentucky Republican canceled a campaign fundraising event with Hastert. Rep. Ron Lewis said he wants to know the facts behind a scandal that has roiled Republicans since last week.
"I'm taking the speaker's words at face value," Lewis said in an interview. "I have no reason to doubt him. But until this is cleared up, I want to know the facts.
"If anyone in our leadership has done anything wrong, then I will be the first in line to condemn it."
Hastert on the hot seat
Taken together, the comments by Fordham and the actions by Lewis added to the political uncertainty surrounding Hastert and fellow Republicans five weeks before midterm elections in which their control of the House will be tested.
Hastert's office did not immediately respond to either development. The conversations took place long before the e-mail scandal broke, Fordham said, and at least a year earlier than members of the House GOP leadership have acknowledged.

Okay - so Pal Joey is not around...here is THIS
House pages were warning each other about Foley in '95
Many of them say they felt uneasy about his actions
(10-04) 04:00 PDT Washington -- In 1995, male House pages were warned to steer clear of a freshman Republican from Florida, who was already learning the names of the teens, dashing off notes, letters and e-mail to them and asking them to join him for ice cream, according to a former page.
Mark Beck-Heyman, now a graduate student in clinical psychology at George Washington University, and more than a dozen other former House pages said in interviews and via e-mail that Rep. Mark Foley was known to be extraordinarily friendly in a way that made some of them uncomfortable.
Beck-Heyman, who is now a Democrat, said the attention was "weird," and he provided a handwritten letter that Foley had sent him after the page left Washington to return home to California, suggesting that they get together during the Republican National Convention in San Diego in 1996.
The e-mail exchanges that have become public in recent days are between Foley and male former pages. None of those interviewed said they had received a sexual or suggestive overture from him during their time on Capitol Hill. Yet many of them said they were uneasy about Foley's actions and felt awkward complaining to anyone about them.
Foley was popular with many of the pages. The teenagers come from all over the nation to serve at the Capitol.
Their schedules are tightly controlled. They travel with adult chaperones and their computers are monitored. So when they do receive extra one-on-one attention, it is a big deal.
The pages did, however, receive a lot of attention from Foley. He attended one of their parties in a tuxedo. He donated to the fundraiser that helps pay for their prom and spoke admiringly about them in floor speeches. He learned their names and asked them about themselves. For many, it was welcome attention.
"He was consistently kind," said Bryce Chitwood, president of the 2002 page class. "He was just a very friendly man and was always willing to befriend a page. It was something we appreciated. You find yourself very low on the totem pole of the congressional power scale. For a congressman to act like he was interested in a person and cared about us was something pretty special and pretty important."
Shame, Shame - everybody know's your name.

Pennywise - someone leaked this... I can't for the life of me figure out why a Republican would. Foley's "people" tried to arrange some kind of deal to stop ABC, but it didn't work.
Can't wait for Nancy Grace tonight!!!

Thanks, n69n. Now I know I'm not nuts (but she is).
mejusthavingfun, with all due respect, you need to cool down with your leak-obsession! It's Washington, for goddsake, things get leaked all the time and they always will. Why does that matter?
Merriam-Webster defines the verb leak: (int.) to become known despite efforts at concealment and (trans.) to give out (information) surreptitiously.
My point is that it doesn't matter to me how the information gets out. What matters is the truth. We cannot let whether it was "leaked" cloud the actual issue.
Yes, I know that "leaks" timed so close to an election seem even more politically motivated than "usual," but...what else is new? Again, it's Washington, DC we're talking about! The news item here is not "leaks," it's...well, you know what it is.

Alert: Hastert To Take Blame
In a press conference scheduled for noon CT in Illinois, House Speaker Dennis Hastert plans to accept some measure of responsibility for failing to discover Rep. Mark Foley's misconduct with pages, a House official said this morning. " He is taking responsibility because the buck stops with him," the official said.
Hastert won't resign "because that would be giving into the Democrat party’s best wish," the official said.
He is expected to make several announcements, including one about revisions to the page program.

Well he resigned,,, so something is obviously up. The questions I now have concern the leaks of these IMs. Have they been confirmed by anyone but ABC? Even if they were real have they been edited? The media has started to read them as the word. Maybe this is why he hasn't been arrested?
We all know the republicans tried to cover it up.
Every side of this is fishy. It's so strange how it's playing out.
