i just picked this up at my local blockbuster and i'm watching it now. it's only my second time ever seeing this movie and it's cute so far. julie andrews is hysterical. she's funny in the scene where she gives the kids their medicine because they've just come in from the rain. she takes some medicine too and hers turns out to be flavored with rum punch!
then the kids are reminiscing about their outing and jane reminds mary poppins that she won the horse race. mary poppins looks at her and says: "a repectable person like me in a horse race?!! how dare you suggest such a thing!!"....i fell out!!
then michael says: "but i saw you do it!" and mary poppins says: "now not another word or i'll have to summon a policeman!" and then she uses reverse psychology on the kids (who refuse to go to sleep) and begins to sing a "reverse lullaby": "Stay Awake".
if i didn't know better i would say Mary Poppins comes off as a little "uppity" in some parts. i didn't realize she also comes off a little bitchy also! too funny!!
It's only your second time ever watching MARY POPPINS??
I promise you, you will enjoy it more and more every time you watch it... It goes much deeper than first meets the eye. It's pure magic!
yes Addy...i'm a late bloomer when it comes to things like Mary Poppins. only reason i watched it the first time was because my ex-girlfriend liked the movie and she rented it once and i watched it with her.
Well, better late than never!
And, I'm glad that your first time didn't sour you for the experience you're about to have...
nah...not a chance. i'm up to the part where mr, banks takes the kids to the bank. funny how dick van dyke also play the owner of the bank also.
i'll probably buy the 40th anniversary edition when it's released.
Yes, funny...
The 40th Anniversary edition will have so many wonderful features... I can't WAIT!!
just finished watching it! i can see why andrews won the oscar..she was so natural on screen, you can't tell it's her first movie. now i have "let's go fly a kite" in my head. i'm going to have to pick up the soundtrack sometime this week.

Ahhhh! Is it December 14th yet???
Not yet...but I'm counting the days.
Marquise, every song is so singable. You laugh. You cry. It's perfect!
Guess who was also up for an oscar the year Andrews won for MP?
Did I tell you all I've met Julie Andrews twice?
Morning NYadgal and Marquise. :)
Morning, Glebb.
Marquise - you changed....
Oh, I should know the answer... but I haven't had enough coffee yet, so I can't think. (I'm sure I'll kick myself when you tell me!)
I would love to meet her. She just seems so friendly. And such a superb talent...
Friendly, down to earth.... all that. Very much like Margot Fonteyn -- Julie Andrews.
I believe Audrey was nominated that same year for MY FAIR LADY. Maybe Mary_Ethel will check the facts.
NYadal, don't you just love that sexy, smart and kind Marquise?
Maybe we need to launch an official Marquise is hot thread.
I think you may be right...I would go 'google' it, but my computer is as slow as molasses this morning, and it might take me until lunch to get an answer. (Where are my tech guys when I need them?)
Speaking of Margot Fonteyn, I just got her new biography. (At least I think it's new - it was in the 'just arrived' section of the library).
Marquise is ALL THAT! I think a new thread may be exactly what this board needs...
I'm sure you'll love the Bio of Dame Margot.
She is in my book the greatest Ballerina ever. The symbol of British ballet.
She was a huge star in England and when the Royal Ballet came to America everyone was looking forward to seeing the red haired Scottish Ballerina Moira Shearer who had made a big splash in the film THE RED SHOES. Margot proved her metal that season at the (old) MET and became the greatest Ballerina in the world.
I met Margot Fonteyn three times and will never forget how kind and down to earth she was. She had to face great tragedies in her later life and she did so with an enormous amount of grace and bravery.

Glebb - unfortunately, Ms. Hepburn was NOT nominated that year for My Fair Lady - and almost everyone, including Ms. Andrews herself, has commented at one point or another that it was pure sympathy for Julie that got her the award that year.
Did Audrey present to Julie?

Actually, Rex Harrison did.
LOL! Maybe I'm still dreaming. :)
Here's an interesting picture. Audrey Hepburn (who starred in the film version of "My Fair Lady", which Julie Andrews was passed up for) is seen here with Julie after her Oscar win for "Mary Poppins" (the film Julie ultimately made after being denied to reprise her stage success in "My Fair Lady" on screen). So there you have it! The screen and stage Elizas together.
IMO, Julie is being way to humble. I just saw Mary Poppins for the second time last night and I have to give her props, she looked like she was a veteran film actress. I never would have known it was her first movie. She deserved that Oscar!

Marquise, I adore that photo. Great find.
When you come to NY, add watching Mary Poppins together to our list of activities...
Glebb, I am looking forward to the book....I have always admired her.
okay.....we'll watch the movie AND all the EXTRAS!
If I'm off by any chance that weekend, I'm crashing the party!!!!
A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes...
And I'll serve tea!
Only remaining question: WHEN?
(Glebb, it wouldn't be a party without you!)
Thanks Addy. It will be my first time having........ uh hum... a tea party on the ceiling.
