So--what's the deal with Greenies? What is in these things? My dog loses all control when I open the bag. I seriously think he is addicted.
The ingredients seem so innocuous--"processed soy gluten", etc. The only wild card is "natural flavors". What could it be? The things that he finds out in the world that drive him this crazy are all really gross--usually related to dead animals or horse manure.
Could it be??????
Oh, and the freebie cat greenies they've been including with the dog bones? Totally drive my friend's cats insane. What are these people up to?????
I have no idea what the appeal of them is, but my dogs go nuts for them. I guess it's universal.
One of my dogs is about 147 years old, and she recently got a hiatal hernia, which basically means she can't eat solid food. She used to love greenies, and now when we give them to our other dog, she sits there and cries because she can't have one. (Note: She's a cocker spaniel...she doesn't whine about anything else.)
These people are brilliant.
I have heard horrible things about Greenies not fully breaking down and getting caught in dog's digestive systems and killing them. I won't give them to my dogs because I don't want to risk it. Dentabones get the same reaction that you are describing from my dogs and they seem to be safe for them.
Greenies on snopes
Wow.
Thank you so much for that.
The effect of Greenies on Miss Holly is similar to the effect on humans of Angel Dust mixed with Crack Cocaine, with an Absinthe chaser.
Therefore we treat Greenies as a party drug and only give them to Miss Holly when she doesn't have to go to work on Monday.

PJ, I think I love you.
I'm only 70% gay, though. Can this work????
Awwww BTA...you KNOW I love you!

I have a dog and I do not even know what you are talking about. Where do you get these greenies? I feed the dog Natures Recipe and tonight gave him a ham bone tonight.
PJ is 100% Democrat!
I gave my boxer greenies for a while. They come out the same way they go in....green.
The SNOPES link is undetermined. I wouldn't go by that. Try giving your dog half a greenie and see how it goes.
If it was true that a greenie soaked in water turned into a mass of foam rubber, then don't you think every dog that ate one would die?
The dog I sit for loves these too!
So does mine. Never turned into foam rubber or anything.... except green poop.
I don't have a dog and I've never seen greenies - but all this talk puts me in mind of "Soylent Green". Maybe they're made out of ground up people and that's why dogs love 'em so much?

My dogs get all excited when we give them Greenies. Not sure what makes them taste so good, though!
Just a note, there is a huge issue with the recall of Diamond pet food.

In regards to the Snopes story, I've fed my dogs Greenies for months, and they haven't gotten ill or thrown up from them.
and doggies do love people!
greenies = doggy crack
since we're on the topic of pet foods... never ever feed your pets iams foods. the copany was bought out by proctor and gamble, who does lots of animal testing, and the "animal by-products" in their pet food are the animals from the studies that got so sick they had to be uethenized.
there was a 5 year old girl who died after eating a piece... she was allergic to prednisone, a medicine that one of the dogs in a test was given.
I propose an experiment. All of us with Greenies in the house will soak one overnight in water and report the results tomorrow.
Who's in?!?
(I will have to do mine after Truman has been put to bed for the night. He will go nuts if he knows I am wasting one of his treats! )
Don't tell me Hill's Science Diet is going on a no-no list next. It's the only thing she'll eat.
We sell those where I work. I gave my dog one once, she ate it just like she eats other treats I don't think it had an extra speciall effect on her...then again she's 14 and she might just be a poo.
My boss's dog flips over them, though. She throws it around the store and plays catch with herself, I think she eats it eventually lol.
