Friend called back for role I currently do? HELP

So I’m in a bit of a pickle.



I’m currently a sub at a wonderful show at a theme park resort. I love my job, but unfortunately, due to the nature of my contract, I can go sometimes months without getting a shift.



One of my good friends, and now roommate, just got called back...for the same role. My feelings are so torn. I want my friend to succeed, but I also worry what will happen if she books the job. We’ll be under the same roof, both vying for hours.



How do I proceed?!? HELP.

Neither of you controls whether the other one gets shifts. It's not her deciding you don't get a shift. If you go months without getting a shift and they're still booking more people, it says you're not high on their list regardless of whether they hire her so if it isn't her getting shifts you wanted to get, it would be someone else. It's not her fault if she gets more shifts than you. You can be angry and jealous and hold it against her or be happy because she's your friend and if you didn't get a shift, at least someone you care about did instead of a stranger. The best advice is to talk to your supervisor and ask what you need to improve upon to be considered for more frequent work.

You proceed by realizing that you don’t get a say in how often you get a shift or who else is hired. If this isn’t something you can handle, find a new job.

It's only awkward if you make it awkward.

Life is difficult. Use this as an opportunity to grow emotionally rather than to create drama that swirls around you.

But I would ask to talk to management asking them: Why are they putting someone else on, when you seldom get to actually work.

It's tough being a sub in any industry - especially when you enjoy the job. I was in a similar situation, so I just 'politely reminded' HR (via email) that I loved the position I was in, and wouldn't mind picking up more shifts when they became available. That seemed to do the trick, and no hard feelings anywhere.
