"Did you, by any chance, see "The Aviator", "Kinsey", "Hotel Rwanda", or "The Sea Inside"? He was lucky to get nominated."

Saw all of them acctually! And in my opinion Dicaprio cannot hold a candle to any of these perfromances. He was good in the Aviator but terribly incosistant with a tendancy to be one level.

Depp wins hands down. With Bardem nipping at his heels. Dicaprio finishes dead last in that list for me.

I'm sorry, I just hated him in that film. So... blah and uninteresting. Anyways, what did you think of Don Cheadle?

"terribly incosistant with a tendancy to be one level."

I have no idea what you mean by that.

I felt Dicaprio's performance in the Aviator was inconsistant. One scene he was really good and then the next he was just phoning it in. And as usual he has a tendancy to be One Level.

Cheadle was excellent and sits behind Bardem in my mind.

Dicaprio will not win the oscar.

The beauty of Depp's performance is that is was so kind and gentle and understated. You could tell he loved those children and his heart broke each time they were almost taken away.
Depp was robbed again.

Very interesting. I'm all for subtle performances, but... I don't like DiCaprio, but I was very, very impressed. On another note, I felt that Jeff Bridges ("Door in the Floor") and Kevin Bacon ("The Woodsman") were robbed of the attention they deserved.

Of course, Leo will not the Oscar. In fact, rarely has a lock ever been so clear in a particular race.
#155

And that lock would be?

Personally, I would like to see Dicaprio win, just to atone for the biggest travesty in Oscar history, when his Oscar for Gilbert Grape was inexplicably handed to Tommy Lee Jones for his godawful turn in The Fugitive.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

The lock is Jamie Foxx. He deserves the Oscar for "Ray", but he can be such a cocky bastard, that I too would like to see someone else bust out and win.

And, you're right. DiCaprio did deserve the Oscar for "Gilbert Grape".

Boy, if that isn't true.
He needs to keep that ego in check.

I am so bad. I haven't seen any of the movies nominated (except POTO). I just don't have time to go the movies any more. golden globes spoiled

Sticktopriest-

It's funny. Just as I typed that, I turned on the TV, and I hear him say this on E!: "It takes a lot of talent to be a star". Rarely, have I ever heard that come out of a celebrity's mouth.

But Foxx is cocky because it's all so sudden to him! He hasn't had time to cool down about this variety of celebrity outside of the awards circuit like DiCaprio (whose performances in blockbusters earned him scarce awards recognition). I've really felt contempt for Ray but I'm starting to think that it would be cruel if Foxx lost the Oscar largely because people are annoyed with his cockiness or all of the attention he has been receiving.
#161

I don't think Foxx shouldn't win the Oscar due to his cockiness.
I think he shouldn't win the Oscar because I felt his peformance to be entirely underwhelming.

My only problem with Leonardo is that everytime I see another movie with him in it (Romeo and Juliet, Cath Me if You Can, The Aviator, etc) I am always thinking "Titanic", probably because it was the first movie I saw him in, and I don't think his voice or his looks changed a BIT, and so everytime I see his movies I'm thinking "Jack, Jack, Jack"

Sally-

Watch "The Aviator". I used to think the exact same thing as you, but that changed with this film.

As for Foxx, I'm not being serious when I say he shouldn't win the Oscar because of his attitude. Some, like Sticktopriest, simply found his performance to be average. He deserves it, but I think it would be funny if someone surprised everyone and won. Maybe that would deflate his head.

Dicaprio gets my vote for the Oscar. (Not that I get to vote.) I agree with Priest. Foxx's performance in Ray didn't impress me all that much. He was good, but IMO his portrayal was one dimensional. I felt Leo's performance in The Avaitor was multi-layered; more nuanced and complex.

For my viewing pleasure, I wouldn't mind a major upset in at least three of the four acting categories. How does this sound: Leonardo DiCaprio as BA, Kate Winslet as BAs, Laura Linney as BSAs and Thomas Haden Church as BSA.

But alas, Hollywood and the press have already identified certain frontrunners and will probably follow through...

I want Johnny Depp to win. I thought it was amazing he was nominated for POTC last year, because it was so unexpected. Of course, I loved him in the movie, but it is pretty rare for a teen movie gain any recognition. Usually it shouldn't, but I really hope that Johnny wins this year. I think that Ray should win something, to honor Ray and his music.

kangaroo-

That's exactly how I feel. I'm always shocked when a teen film gets Oscar attention. The way you felt about Depp's "Pirates" performance is the way I felt about Lindsay Lohan in "Mean Girls". No, I'm not joking. I know that Im in the minority when I say that she deserved Rossum's spot.

She wasn't there... when her name was called for her nomination... they didn't show her face at all. They stayed on the presenters.

and broadway86, while I do thank you for agreeing with me... I do not agree with your statement on "Mean Girls". I did not think that movie was that funny, and Lindsay Lohan was not good in it. I think that Emmy deserved it over Lindsay, and I don't even like Emmy in POTO. I think that Mean Girls was overrated, and it was just another excuse for Lindsay to basically expose her breasts on the big screen. I loved Johnny Depp's performance, and I resent it being compared to that of Lindsay Lohan. They are opposites, and Johnny deserved it... while Lindsay didn't, and probably never will.

It's obvious you're not a fan of Lohan, in general. Well, she must have deserved some recognition in order to be nominated for a Critics Choice. Instead defending her, I'll post a section of my review at eFilmCritic.

'After holding her own againts Natasha Richardson & Dennis Quaid in "The Parent Trap", and Jamie Lee Curtis in "Freaky Friday", Lindsay Lohan delivers her best performance as Cady Herron. The transformation that Cady takes, from meek girl to devilish vixen, is quite remarkable. Lohan displays an assured and maturing acting talent, as well as an impressive knack in comedic timing. When she first arrives at school, Cady has no desire to be popular. All that she wants is to get through her day, unscathed. However, when she becomes the talk of the school, it does not occur to her that horrible things are headed her way. Lohan makes this transition organic and convincing. Her performance here is one of the most impressive of the year.'

ok while i did think Lohan is a good actress, i def. do not think she is oscar or golden globe-worthy

Maybe she is not terrible, but I didn't think it was award-worthy. I personally would not have voted for her, but I like her better as an actress than a singer.
Yes, and my main point was she was not in any way golden or oscar worthy.

I see what you mean. Her turn was definitely not Oscar worthy, but if Jack Black ("School of Rock"), Reese Witherspoon ("Legally Blonde"), Sandra Bullock ("Miss Congeniality"), Cameron Diaz ("There's Something About Mary"), Glenn Close ("101 Dalmatians"), Arnold Schwarzenegger ("Junior" !), and Jim Carrey ("Liar Liar") can all earn Globe nods for their performances in non-Oscar films, then so can Lohan, whose work in that film was on the same plain as those I just named. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one, but do you see where I'm coming from?
