I think 'Neverland' is a lesser work for Depp. The sweetness and lovability he put into unlikely characters seem too syrupy and one note in a story already this sentimental. For a performer so beloved for making bold choices, I'm a bit sad he's getting so much attention for finally essentially just playing to type.

Not a patch on his work in 'Ed Wood' or similar works.

I guess I do, but I think that the other movies were better ... and the actors/actresses were older. Not to say that a younger person doesn't deserve it, but maybe she could possibly get one in the future. I don't think her in this particular movie was worthy of a golden globe nod.

Fair enough.

You thought "Junior" was better than "Mean Girls"?! No, I'm kidding.

I think Jim Carrey is the second funniest man alive. Even if some of his movie choices are... strange.

Agreed. "The Cable Guy" was an oddity. Do you remember the Medeival Times scene w/ Janeane Garafalo? Best scene in the film.

I think that the bizarre nomination of Johnny Depp for "Pirates of the Caribbean" is what makes all this talk of giving Lindsay Lohan and the like Oscar consideration legitimate.
#184

While it was bizarre, it wasn't undeserved. He pulled off the character very well, and it was a hard character. It's not as if he is a pirate in real life. He was hilarious, and I thought he was great. .. I think a lot of teenage girls went to see Orlando, but ended up going back to see the movie again to watch Johnny.

which is odd, as he wasn't the lust object in the Pirates movie.

'DiCaprio did deserve the Oscar for "Gilbert Grape".'

Just had to go back to this comment. No...he didn't. Ralph Fiennes deserved the Oscar for one of the most terrifying portraits of evil ever enshrouded on film.

I thought, after him, Malkovich should have gotten it.

Leo, for me, was a distant third. I hate the whole 'Play a retard, win an award' mentality when it comes to awards!

I agree with robbiej on Ralph deserving the award that year, but then I would put Leo second. His performance in Grape was very real and believable, not to mention very difficult. His best work. Malkovich was doing his Malkovich thing that he does in most films. I loved Malkovich in Empire of the Sun and Dangerous Liaisons, but have grown pretty tired of his stuff. Tommy Lee Jones was also very good and it was obvious he got the award for most memorable performance. I remember at the time, there was a TON of press about Jones' performance in The Fugitive. I know I saw In the Name of the Father, but I honestly don't remember anything about it or Pete Postlethwaite's performance in it.

I know I'm coming late to this thread, but there are a few things I wanted to say. First, I am SO happy that Portman and Owens get the recognition they deserved for CLOSER, Clive slightly more than Natalie. I would have voted for Laura Linney in this category, but I'm just happy that Virgina Madsen didn't win - her performance in SIDEWAYS was definitely not award-worthy. Does anything think Clive has a chance of winning the oscar for his role? Although I would vote for him HANDS DOWN, I'm afraid it might go to the more acclaimed Church or Freeman. I wouldn't be disappointed if Sarsgaard won either for KINSEY, he was extraordinary. I'm really hoping that Jamie Foxx isn't nominated in this category for COLLATERAL - that is NOT an oscar worthy performance, and his spot should go to either Highmore for NEVERLAND or Wahlberg for HUCKABEES.

Speaking of Jamie Foxx....

I had seen RAY when it first opened and was unimpressed and unaffected by both his performance AND the movie. I saw it again on Sunday (GG day,) knowing that he was going to win and tried to look at it from a different point of view. Although this time around I did find the movie more moving, I enjoyed Foxx's performance far less than I did the first time around - and that isn't very much. He deserves a nomination, no doubt, but his performance was hardly profound, amazing, or deserving. His acceptance speech and attitude at the GG's and earlier award shows has already condemmed him in my book. Last year, when Sean Penn won best actor, did he make it about being white? No. The other night Foxx won an award for his fine performance in an entertaining (problematic) movie about an amazing, talented, inspiring man. He didn't win an award for being black. It seems that everyone else understands this except for him - THERE IS NO NEED TO BRING RACE INTO YOUR ACCEPTANCE SPEECH. The whole "we did it! the struggle is over! praise jesus" demeanour has got to stop, and his behaviour that night should be reason enough for him not to win the award - it's bad enough that this movie will probably be nominated for best picture. And Foxx could really use this potential oscar loss in his advantage and get his ego back in check. In my opinion, he did nothing oscar worthy in that movie. If mimicking a voice, lipsinking, wearing sunglasses, and sitting slouched over a piano like the real Ray Charles did means he's an amazing, oscar worthy actor, then I guess I'm wrong. But I doubt that I am. Hopefully, if he DOES win the Academy Award, which he probably will, he doesn't make it about being black and his fellow cast members can hold back the tears and stop acting so surprised that he won.

Tommy Lee Jones was also very good and it was obvious he got the award for most memorable performance.

Memorable? Memorable? Am I alone in thinking his performance in The Fugitive was the very definition of "phoning it in"?

Really?

I actually like the movie and Jones in it. Not that I would have given him the Oscar (which he should have won for his GLORIOUS work in JFK), but I did enjoy it...and still do when I catch it on cable.

I thought the movie was a hateful pile of tedious nonsense and could NOT understand the hoo ha surrounding Tommy Lee Jones' non-performance. Awful.

That and any movie that relegates Julianne Moore to such a woefully underwritten role deserves to be ignored (cf. The Forgotten).

I dug 'The Fugitive.' I don't like action flicks generally but thought this one was pretty smart and I liked Jones a lot. He had all the good lines, after all.

Until 'The Hours,' 'The Fugitive' was my ace in the hole when pressed with 'name your favorite Julianne Moore movie.

He had all the good lines, and killed every single one of them with his flat and lazy delivery. Hate him.
