Money will never erase the emotional/mental abuse this poor woman suffered. Nevertheless, the outpouring of $$$ and affection is certainly wonderful.

As for these morally bereft creatures, they are waaaaaaaaaaay beyond being called bullies. They are, imo, the future sociopaths, psychopaths of America. Just another scary dimension of the entitlement/youTube culture.

Too bad BEYOND SCAReD STRAIGHT is just a reality show.

She just said on Anderson Cooper that she doesn't believe the money is gonna get to her, she said it sounds too good to be true.

Cooper said he got in touch with Southwest Airlines and they are giving her and 9 people a trip to Disney in California.

Greece is only a 25 minute drive from where I live and the fact that this happened at this school does surprise me. Greece is actually a pretty decent school district but there are always exceptions and these vile creatures are deserving of the most severe punishment for this.

Expulsion COULD happen, but it seems unlikely, especially if this is a first offence.

Additionally, in many states, expulsion is often side stepped --there is often enough time to find another school placement before the expulsion is actually put into effect. Then it never becomes part of the child's record. In fact, BOTH sides of the problem (family & schools) root for this to happen. Lastly, in many districts/states, the expulsion is only good for up to one school year.

Yes, most kids don't mind the time off in a suspension, but that part is up to the parents to make them realize the seriousness of their actions. All too many parents side with their kids and make the school the 'bad guy'. No matter what the reason the suspension.

My favorite example: an 8th grade student at my school was suspended from school for walking into class with his pants down (there is more to the story, I give you the abbreviated version). The father (that traveled for work) had a list of chores the student was to do during the suspension. The dad walked out the door, and the mother told the kid to go back to bed, that he didn't have to do anything. Suprise, suprise -- this student continued to be one of the biggest a$$holes I've ever met -- all the way through his graduation (3 weeks ago). Oh, and his mummy was on the school board (elected position) these last 5 years. Got thrown out of class nearly once a week. Argued about every grade, every homework, every class discussion in which he was purposefully inappropriate. I truly fear for his role in society. He will be, if he isn't already, a date rapist -- not in the violent sense of the word, but in that belief that "no" holds no meaning.

Schools can only do so much. We do not rear the child, families are far more influential.

Yesterday the LA Times came out with an article featuring some parenting 'expert' spouting nonsense about how the kids in question shouldn't be punished because they were just acting out of a 'need for a sense of significance and belonging'.

All bullied bus monitor Karen Klein wanted was an apology. Now she's getting that and then some.

Police say the four boys who tormented the 68-year-old on a school bus in upstate New York earlier this week have taken responsibility for their actions. The students are also saying they're sorry.

"I feel really bad about what I did," one said in a statement to CNN. "I wish I had never done those things. If that had happened to someone in my family, like my mother or grandmother, I would be really mad at the people who did that to them."

Another said, "When I saw the video I was disgusted and could not believe I did that. I am sorry for being so mean, and I will never treat anyone this way again."

I can never understand people bullying someone because they bullied another. Is this a battle of the biggest bully? It's like smacking a kid for hitting.

It does SOUND as if the kids are remorseful, and that's a step. Kids do stupid things, and while they do need to be taught a lesson, it should NOT ruin the rest of thier lives.

BTW....she's surpassed the 1/2 million mark. AND....from everything I've heard, she won't pay taxes on this....it's a gift. It has nothing to do with her personally.

Anyone know why she won't have to pay taxes? I thought all monetary gifts over 12 grand or so were taxable? It's good for her, sure, but I'm just curious.

ETA - Never mind, I just read that gift taxes aren't paid by the receiver but by the giver.

Yup, only the giver pays taxes IF the gift is OVER 13000 to any one recipient. I could give 13000 to 10 different people and not have to pay any taxes on it.

I admit, I don't understand paying taxes on money you are giving away.

Yeah, I understand very little about taxation, especially when it comes to taxation of large sums of money.

I don't understand earning half a million dollars because you couldn't do your job, either, but I don't begrudge the woman. The levels of failure here are seemingly endless, from the school that put her in this position she wasn't equipped for to the parents of those awful children and their underdeveloped brains. I just hope that anyone with children who gave money knows its their responsibility to keep on top of their children's behavior. Ultimately, I just think this story will eventually fade away and be forgotten, until the next time we're collectively reminded of how frigging awful kids can be.

Somehow I thought the receiver had to pay taxes if it were over a certain amount (just looked it up and yep it IS $13,000) by a single giver over a calendar year. Since these are all small individual gifts by numerous people none of which would exceed the $13,000, I believe it will be tax free for her.
This makes me extremely happy for the woman! I truly hopes she retires comfortably now if she so desires, or at least doesn't feel she "HAS TO" work any longer then she needs to!

Only the GIVER of over 13000 would pay taxes...NOT the reciever.

If a million people gave you a dollar, no one would pay taxes.

Shame, shame, shame, on the mainstream media for diluting this story in a BIG way this week. The first reports cited the video and the ENTIRE transcript, future reports watered down the "comments" of the bullies" So that newsroom editors felt THE STORY would not "upset" viewers.

Case in point: "One teases, "How about if I bring my knife and f***ing cut you?" while another laughs and says, "If I stabbed you in the stomach, my knife would go through you like butter."

These particular comments are the most heinous of all, imo. It shows just how morally bankrupt these assholes are, and should be punished harshly. I, for one, will go out on a limb here and say that these"kids" deserve VERY harsh punishment, incarceration, and education. I do not believe their bull**** apologies ( a few days after) for a minute. They're doing what the media is pressuring them to do. It's not sincere in my estimation They're already exhibiting sociopathic behavior as young teens.

The whole $$$ discussion is nice and lovely, but a moot point also. Money should never be considered as some source of remedy to a situation like this. Just maybe this woman WANTS to keep working 'cause she enjoys the (mostly) pleasureable activity of working. All she wants is sincere apologies and the education of these morons. Tx attys, should not be whoring off this tragedy, making $$$.

Oh, btw, BE FORCED TO WALK TO SCHOOL with sanDwich boards on you, detailing your "activity", and BE PUBLICLY HUMILIATED! (COMMUNITY "SERVICE")

from another source: "The Bullying Kids should be under house arrest for the summer with NO TV, cell phones, computer, movies, videos,or their favorite music. Their activities should be household chores, yard work, &cooking. For leisure they should be given books to READ,paper and pencils to write with, and allowed to listen classical music only. A summer without all the electronics and social networking tools may help them remember how to think and feel again."

There will be no tax attorneys -- the law states she will not have to pay taxes. It's pretty darn simple.

Tiny, I tend to agree with you on many of your points. The apologies, made in writing ring hollow and forced. Let is see what the school board does. What the kids actually said is heinous and should be taken very seriously.

As far as the money thing goes, I find it actually very eartwarming. People across the globe have felt for the ordeal this woman went through and have contributed with their hearts, the only way they can. On some level, it restores my faith in humanity.

Not sure if it will be out on Video by then but during the first week of school they should show the documentary BULLY every day and make attendance mandatory.

TheTinyMagic2, I heard about the stabbing and the other stuff right when the story came out. However, I have noticed the media reporting a very watered down version of the story. Probably just for time but still, I feel those disturbing facts and details should be highlighted.

I heard two of the kids apologized to her but c'mon. I think they will say anything at this point. They are terrified. Death threats. Their names and addresses and phone numbers are out there. Police investigations. Charges against them yet to be determined. They are hated around the world let alone there own town. Their parent's have now suffered for their actions. SO yeah. These kids are really scared and I think they will say ANYTHING just to make this all go away.I wonder if their parents will punish them at all?

Question now is, what sort of punishment should they get? Expulsion? (I hope so) Community service(Perhaps)Banned from riding the bus forever? (DEFINITELY!) Should they change schools? What charges can/will be made against them? I hope the media does not just forget about this story after a week or so.
