And I'm delighted that Karen is getting all this money. It shows these imbeciles that everyone is on KAREN'S side, and instead of her looking bad, as they wanted her to, she comes out the winner.

As I have said, I want these kids punished SEVERELY for what they did. However, I think they are going to need some serious counseling after all of this. They might develop anger issues and blame this woman for their misfortune. They are going to find many of the friends they had last week are not going to want to be friends with them now. Parent's of other kids won't want their children to be friends or hang out with them.I think this goes a lot deeper than them bullying an elderly woman.I would not be surprised if they even see themselves as the victim here and the world is against them. They are going to need at least some therapy to get through all of this.One thing I had not thought of but this will effect them for the rest of their lives.They may be in denial and not see that right now but I am sure they will. I feel their parents are as much to blame as they. I just hope the parents are smart enough to get them some help NOW and start taking an interest in your kids!

"Four seventh-grade students from upstate New York who were caught on video mercilessly taunting a 68-year-old bus monitor have received their punishment.
The school system in the Rochester suburb of Greece says it will suspend the middle school students from their school and from using regular bus transportation for a year for bullying Karen Klein.
The students will be transferred to a special alternative education program because the district is legally required to give them an education. Each student also will be required to complete 50 hours of community service with senior citizens.
They will be able to reapply to middle school after they complete the discipline.
In a statement, the school system said each of the students involved admitted wrongdoing, accepted the consequences and agreed to let the district publicly release the terms of their disciplinary action.
The cellphone video posted online by a fellow student drew millions of viewers. The video shows Klein trying her best to ignore a stream of profanity, insults and outright threats.
One student taunted:'You don't have a family because they all killed themselves because they don't want to be near you.'Klein's oldest son killed himself 10 years ago.
Eventually, Klein appears to break down in tears.
A fund drive that began with a goal of $5,000 to help Klein take a nice vacation raised more than $667,000 as of Friday.
Klein has received national attention through social and news media with interviews such as an appearance earlier this week on NBC's 'Today' show. She was honored Thursday in Boston, where she was greeted by a youth cheerleading squad and escorted on a red carpet to receive an honorary Boston school bus monitor certificate.
Klein could not be reached for comment Friday. However, police have said Klein did not want the boys to face criminal charges.
In an Associated Press interview last week, Klein asked people to leave the boys alone.
'Threatening them? No. That's not the way to go about things,' she said. 'They're just kids.
'I don't want to judge anybody or put them in jail or anything like that. I just want them to learn a lesson.'

They are going into basically a special ed school for bad kids for a year and lose their bus privileges.
Considering all the money she is going to get plus the punishment the kids got I think it turned out pretty fair.

I'm satisfied with the punishment. No haughty 7th grader wants to leave their school, so that must be a big bummer for them. Hopefully they won't be allowed around each other much at the new one.

From what I've read about the fund, quoting various tax/financial experts, the consensus seems to be that she will not have to pay tax on the money. (But she would pay capital gains tax on what she profits from investing it.) Also, donors won't be able to write off donations to her. For example:

"As a general rule, there are no income tax implications to the recipient/donee of a cash gift," wrote Clark in an e-mail. "If she invests that cash, she would be responsible for income taxes on any income derived from it."
That makes sense — if Klein invested the funds and made a profit, she'd be taxed for her capital gains.
But what about the donors? They're off the hook as well, as long as no individual donor gave Klein more than $13,000. They can't, however, claim their donation as a tax write-off.
"The gift tax implications are more relevant on the donor side," said Clark. "If individual donations don't exceed $13,000, there are no issues for the donors. If a single donation exceeds $13,000, the donor is supposed to file a gift tax return. I am guessing that most donations are on the small side. And it isn't clear, but I assume that there is no 'charitable purpose' behind these donations for IRS purposes, so there’s no tax deductions for donors."
For further clarification, Mashable called up Slava Rubin, CEO and founder of IndieGoGo. Slava was careful to say that he couldn’t legally give tax advice because he's not a registered accountant. However, he was able to tell us that the Karen Klein campaign "is not an official non-profit," so indeed the donors wouldn’t be able to write-off their donation.
