Anyone watch the first episode? I'm big fan of the whole Lecter genre, so I watched with enthusiasm.
I wasn't disappointed, mainly because of Mads Mikkelsen, who plays the good doctor. I'm mesmerized by him. I read that he's the number one actor in Denmark. Well, I'm sold. I think he's just right for Hannibal the Cannibal. On the other hand, I'm not fond at all of Hugh Dancy, the other male lead.
I have a question for anyone who watched it and isn't as slow as I am. lol.

I have it recorded and plan on watching it Sunday. Entertainment Weekly has five thoughts after the premiere, in case any of these answer your question

Dancy's accent was slipping and, this may be my projection, but he seemed to take acting tips about a slightly unhinged government agent from his wife Claire Danes. Even the facial tics seemed similar.
But Fishburne as Crawford was a pleasant surprise as that was really nowhere in the promoting of the show. Between this and Perry White in Man of Steel, he is rocking the color-blind casting this year. Eddie Izzard and Gillian Anderson are prominently featured this season so I think I can work around Dancy.
I am a huge fan of Mads Mikkelsen (look for him in The Hunt, A Royal Affair, Valhalla Rising, and if you hate subtitles, Casino Royale) and his introduction had me downright giddy and to me the direction by David Slade on the pilot may be my favorite part of the show. Really just better than anything I have seen on network in a while. Slade (a really underrated director who should be doing blockbusters) and Bryan Fuller's vision are a really good match.
And the set design winks and homages to The Shining. Goodness.

Posted: 4/5/13 at 8:48pmI'm glad you posted about this. I already have SCANDAL & ELEMENTARY Thursdays at 10, so I'll need to watch this On Demand but totally forgot about it.

Posted: 4/5/13 at 8:52pmWynbish no, it was about Dancy's "special skill." A little too science fiction for me to fit in with the rest of anything I've seen in the Lecter series.

Not when compared to the styles of Demme and Mann in both of their entries in the Lector brand. This pilot only seems guilty of daring to be cinematic on a network show.

But, but... the timeline. Silence of the Lambs was set in the 1980s, and Lector had already been captured and was in prison. How can he still be undiscovered, practicing psychiatry while killing and eating people in his spare time, in the present??? It just doesn't make any sense to me. -- Those who have visited the Bates Motel thread will get what I'm driving at.
I found the pilot over-stylized, as well, although I loved the nod to Kubick's The Shining. I'm intriguing enough to give it a chance.

If Psycho was 1960, and its remake is 2013, there's a HUGE time difference which is impossible to ignore.
Watching Hannibal didn't make me notice a time difference. I was too involved in Mikkelsen anyway!
So, Bates MOtel sharted but not Hannibal.

Posted: 4/6/13 at 2:28pmI have no desire to see this show.. but I'm glad people like Mads Mikkelson... the guy has this interesting presence about him that is both creepy to me and mesmerizing... i've enjoyed him in his other movies as he's a good actor... but i find him unsettling sometimes... hmm

Hannibal the movie makes me incredibly sad. I loved the book. They fvcked the film.
The timeline of this series doesn't bother me. I like that you have to just suspend your inner calendar. Hannibal is ageless and the era is unimportant. I dig it.
I couldn't figure out where I had seen the actor playing Hannibal before, but I am sure it's on Danish TV.

Namo, I laughed out loud, thanks. I can just see the Bold Headline in the press kit-
HANNIBAL, THE SHOW THAT DIDN'T SHART!!!!!!
Eric, I could agree that parts of Hannibal the film were beautiful- the touristy shots in Italy. But otherwise, that was a very dark and grisly film. Not fun nor easy to watch.

Posted: 4/6/13 at 5:22pmSince my expectations were low, I thought the pilot was much better than I expected. But it's got that Thursday 10:00pm time spot on NBC, a death knell to numerous series since ER ended its run (Souhtland, The Jay Leno Show, The Marriage Ref, Prime Suspect, The Firm, Awake, Do No Harm).

I was a little thrown to see Scott Thompson from Kids in The Hall as a forensic doctor.
I can't believe him in a serious role.
Why are Dr. Lecters suits vintage and why is Jack Crawford now a black man?
