I've stuck with it, but I'm ready to give it up.

Jane, So far we haven't seen Hannibal do much killing at all. That girl from last night was from the original case that kicked off the series with a three episode arc about the dad who killed girls who looked like his daughter.

Hannibal has many serialized elements, but it always is just another procedural like Criminal Minds or CSI. Mads and Hugh are buddies solving crimes for the FBI and overtime (I assume) Hugh is going to realize that his only friend is in fact a serial killer.

The series is often static, boring and slow-moving. Then all of a sudden there is a stunning visual, or a tension-ridden scene that grips me.

The "cases of the week" aren't well constructed and it's hard to care about them finding the killer. (The guy who made the angel wings, the pharmacist who buried his victims alive in the forest- this wasn't the show I think most people tuned in wanting to see.)

Thanks so much for that Whizzer. I guess I expected this show to be like Bates Motel, sort of a background for the film that came after.

Maybe I'll keep watching now, knowing to see it differently.

I'm with you Jane- I thought we were going to see how Hannibal first killed, and then evolved into a serial killer. How he picks his victims, his preferred method of killing, etc. So far we haven't seen any of that; it's been disappointing to me, and the declining ratings seem to reflect that others viewers feel the same way.

One of the reasons I was hesitant to tune in at first was that I didn't care to see a cheap knock-off of DEXTER. In less capable hands that's what the Hannibal series could have been. The series is not perfect. There are clearly pacing issues; there are one or two cast members too many; and Hugh's gift will soon seem gimmicky unless something comes along to disrupt it for an episode or so. And I have no clue as to what the moose symbolizes.

It's just refreshing to encounter characters on the small screen with superhuman abilities who aren't vampires, werewolves, wiccans or extraterrestrials.

I think the weekly cases are solved too easily and without enough involvement, but I guess that's because they aren't the central focus of the show. You really only want to see what Hannibal is up to. I am still loving it, but think it's a little too bloody to stick around. How is it doing in the ratings?

I told my wife today that Hannibal was played by a Danish actor that I was pretty sure I had seen on TV here. She asked his name and I told her. She just said, "Damn. He is fine." lol

What I enjoy are the scenes at Hannibal's dinner table. Who's for dinner tonight? There is always that queasy close up of cutting meat.

ETA: I do agree there are too many characters the show is focusing on, making it hard to really connect, like I was able to do with Dexter and, after a rough start, Bates Motel. The later has the right balance, yes, there is crazy shart going on but the main focus it the relatioship with Norman and Norma. I am really not sure who to focus on in Hannibal.

Actually, the reviews have been consistently positive. It's just in a terrible slot on a channel that it doesn't really belong on.

Bumping this because I'm apparently a month behind the curve. Just started watching this and am really- really loving it. It's a beautifully shot and composed series, extremely (and shockingly) disturbing, very well-acted, intelligent- rife with philosophy, metaphor, evocative imagery.

It's not Anthony Hopkins camping it up and taking Ray Liotta's scalp off, that's for sure.

The murder cases are easily solved, but this isn't a "whodunnit?" show. The cases are there to enrich the characters.

It was renewed for a second season, as well- curious to see if it extends beyond that.

And it's great to see past Bryan Fuller actors, including Ellen Greene and Raul Esparza.

This show was exquisite, to me. Every episode seemed to be more artistically creative than the last, and every crime scene more gruesome. Hugh and Mads were wonderful this season.

I thought the finale was one of the best hours of TV I can remember. This is a very subtle and gradual character study, not a horror story. The photography is beautiful, the acting amazingly subtle, and the special effects (especially Will Graham's nightmares) are the best I have ever seen. It isn't a "procedural" either, so the "cases" that come up are not the point; it is Will's involvement and reaction to them, and what he takes back to Lecter about the cases, that is what this series appears to be "about." This is not a series that you can pick and choose episodes because you need to know how the strange relationship between Will and Lecter develops. Can't wait for Season 2 (which will inevitably be the final season, I'm guessing.)

Even the fans of the show are very creative. Stuff on tumblr ( www.tumblr.com/tagged/Hannibal ) ranges from wonderfully dark works to pretty funny jokes. It's rife with spoilers though, Kad, so wait a bit on it. I usually don't mind spoilers myself, but I think watching especially the last two episodes spoiler-free is the best way.

Absolutely one of my favorite shows. The last episode of the season clicked everything into place, and next year can't come soon enough.

BUMP for the BLOOPS

Judging from the Emmys thread and the Esparza on SVU thread, there definitely is a smattering of Fannibals around these parts.

So, dear smattering, here is the blooper reel from this very serious first season of Hannibal

I thought I would bump this thread because I just watched the first season over the last 2 days in preparation for season 2 tonight. I gotta say that I was on the fence with this show when it first aired and only watched three episodes before giving up. I'm glad that I went back because I thought it was amazing. Bryan Fuller is probably my favorite person doing television today. Everything he does feels so fresh and original and Hannibal was no exception. Personally I think this is the best show on network television aside from Scandal.

I see how some people might have thought the show to be just another procedural but that's what most shows have to start as these days to find an audience. All of the cases related to the through line of the season which I enjoyed. The only one that seemed off to me was the totem pole case and what was a huge waste of Lance Henriksen.

The actors are all wonderful although Hettienne Park bothers me sometimes (but that might be residual effects from SEMINAR). It's nice to see all the Bryan Fuller alums on the show including Caroline Dhavernas, Ellen Muth, Raúl Esparza, Eddie Izzard, Ellen Greene, etc.

Also in case you missed it since it never aired on TV in the US, you should definitely check out episode 4 (Oeuf). It was unaired due to the school shootings but probably one of the creepiest episodes of the series with a dramatic turn by Molly Shannon.

Very excited for tonight.

That sh!t was sooo nasty. Oddly enough I don't get grossed out by the gory murder scenes but the laparoscopic scenes (feeding tube, opera singers mouth) really skeeve me out.
