I saw the show and while I did see some giggling (mostly from Jake, am I right?) I wouldn't call it hysterics. Who knows why they were giggling? I mean, maybe they were 1. drunk, 2. In silly moods 3. nervous and/or uncomfortable 4.anything else. We probably will never know but in my opinion they were not consciously trying to offend all gay men and/or make a mockery of the film.
I think Heath broke into giggles first, and then he looked at Jake, who just laughed at him. Then they lost it, collectively.
In general, though, the entire atmosphere is a *little* unprofessional.
"I'm just tired of Ledger and Gyllenhaal feeling the need to reassert their heterosexuality and talking about whatever small discomfort they had "playing gay" as if it's completely okay, and not a product of their internalized homophobia.
Basically, I'm saying I wish they'd just grow up a bit, suck it in and take it like a man."
Agreed. I don't see any straight STAGE actors who star as gay characters trying to assert their heterosexuality. When interviewed, they talk about their work, their characters, what matters. People read interviews with actors hoping to understand a little deeper how they feel about their characters, and then when people see the show, it means that much more to them.
A few examples:
Jefferson Mays (straight actor) in I AM MY OWN WIFE. He took pride in his performance, in the character and in the work as a whole. In interviews, he spoke about the depth of the piece.
Daniel Sunjata (straight actor) in TAKE ME OUT. He wasn't spending his interview time declaring that he was straight. He realized what a ground breaking piece this was and spoke about his character and the brilliance of the play with grace.
And BROKEBACK is in even more groundbreaking in the film world than I AM MY OWN WIFE and TAKE ME OUT were in the theatre world, and that's saying a lot. It just seems like Heath and Jake don't get it. Do they realize that this is art? Do they read about what this film means for tons of people?
At least when making his comments, BlueWizard acknowledged that some of this is probably the doing of the actors' publicists and didn't run to place total blame on the actors themselves. I think he's probably right. Theatre publicity is pretty different from Hollywood publicity.
I don't know what you've been watching, because I've seen a good amount of press where they talk about the meaning of the story to them, the depth of their characters (Heath, especially), etc.

My God, I can't believe I'm actually now defending Heath and Jake, but in EVERY interview I've seen with them, the interviewer brings up the whole "You played gay, do you worry people will think you're gay?" angle.
Is there any buzz on the internet about their "horrible"* behavior last night, or is this just a tempest in a BWW teapot?
*Edited to put "horrible" in quotes, lest the BWW literalists think I was being, well, literal.
Blame it on the free flowing Tattinger on the table...

That's what I been sayin' all along, Cookie! Homeboys was drunk.
And that's top shelf bubbly too! I mean, it wasn't as if that was Korbel or anything!
Mix that with the cheesy intro they had to read, I'd be giggling and on the floor of that stage...
You know what happens when they get drunk....
Oh, that's with the hardcore bottom shelf whiskey only....
I should've known.

I just think it's weird that so many (not all) people who have been ranting and raving about how this movie is the most life changing event ever are so quick to pounce on its stars for what they viewed as "inappropriate" behavior. Methinks some people have become overinvested in all things Brokeback.
I hate to say this, but I think that people have been looking for reasons to go after them because they'd rather gay actors have been cast. They've been waiting for mistakes. Or "mistakes," as it were.

Well, Bso asked about that last night on another thread (before someone busted in an started ragging him out for no good reason) if "we"'d have preferred gay actors in the roles. I said possibly I would have, but it's neither here nor there now, as the movie has been made. I will again state that I do think it's a little disconcerting that this big monumental gay event seems to have had no actual gay people involved in its creation, at least none that are visible. That's a threadjack, though, and the focus of this thread is what horrible, rotten people Heath and Jake are.
Oh sure blame it on the cheesy dialogue and the champagne, I suppose all the other presenters had sparkling cider on their table and dialogue written by Sondheim. You know they say the truth comes out when you're drunk, so perhaps we saw what they really think about their " groundbreaking project ", without the coaching of their agent and publicist.
Like my previous post, if the movie was about breast cancer or civil rights, it would be the top story on the news. But it only hurt some fags....who really cares...they were boys having a little fun. Same " boys will be boys" mentality that allows gay kids to get rocks thrown at them on the playground. Personally, as a gay man, I was pretty miffed last night, and I have an excellent sense of humor, but that definitely was NOT funny.
or just tipsy. Maybe they wanted to get in their fun at the fun awards dinners before the bore that the Oscars can be

Oh my f---ing god, did anyone see Catherine Keener present? Or Peter Graves and Barbara Bain? Or the flashback to Jamie Foxx from the year before? Plenty of presenters weren't taking the **** seriously.
Christ, I hated BM, but now all this backlash is actually making me want to root for it.
Why, you sneaky bastards. That was your aim all along, wasn't it?
Kringas -- really? None at all? I find that kind of... surprising, I guess. That's interesting.
I love how the ONLY people accused of stupid behavior here are Heath and Jake. Did you SEE some of the other people? I don't care enough to pay attention to who's who, for the most part, but there were PLENTY of drunk idiots.
The entire thing is pretty unprofessional.

I could be wrong, Em, and I'll be the first to admit it if I am, but to the best of my knowledge, no.
But this thread isn't about that. It's about how Heath and Jake shamed gays, Hollywood, America and the world last night.
ATTENTION BIGOTS:
We get your points. Shut up and go away now. Show some f*cking respect for other people's opinions on a serious issue that many people here take personally. Your opinions are clear. There's no need to go post after post making a mockery of something that people are genuinely upset about.
Just ignore the thread and go away.

Who is genuinley upset about this? Ten people on BWW?
And who are the bigots on this thread?
I'm always kind of amused when disagreement becomes translated so quickly into "disrespect" in some attempt at self-victimization. Christ, I have an opposing opinion; I'm not picking on you. Poor baby.
there are no bigots on bww. ok, well, maybe rodney and his 275 personas, but i didn't see anybody else at the meetings. heath and jake were shunned for their behavior. the awards were changed at the last minute due to their behavior and don't think that the oscars won't hesitate to do the same if they show up with their insulting act there.
