Patti LaBelle can't handle dialogue. I saw her in the Pearl Bailey role on HOUSE OF FLOWERS many years ago and she was dismal in the book scenes.
How old is Cyndi Lauper? Vocally, she could handle shte role, but Dolly has to be "a woman of a certain age" in Wilder's character description.
Channing impressionist Richard Skipper and I feel that the two of us should be cast in the show and alternate the role.

Cyndi Lauper is in her early 50s.

But could Cyndi Lauper lose the accent, talking like that would for(for me) throw the whole thing out of kilter.

Victoria Clark would be interesting.
Not sure about Lauper...though I like her, and would be thrilled to see her in anything on stage.

I'd love to see Julie Andrews do this. Even with her limited range she sings twice as good as most of the people mentioned so far.

Can you imagine Julie Andrews doing the eating schtick in the restaurant scene?
She's much too lady-like.

Julie Andrews would be sitting there sipping properly brewed tea from a china cup with her pinky in the air. On the table would be daintly little tea cakes and scones with clotted cream. It just would work. How about Loretta Swit?

She played cockney without being one. Why not give her another accent? You don't give the ACTRESS the benefit of the doubt.

It looks as if I'll be doing a production of it with Sally Struthers in Maine this summer.....
Now there's a thought.

Sally Struthers has played Dolly previously--and not to good effect.
I still thing Georgia Engel would be the best Dolly around. Please remember, this is a COMIC part!!!!!!

Dollypop, Sally Struthers is one of the most gifted comic performers of our time.
Perhaps you were referring to Ms. Andrews.

No, I meant Struthers. I saw her play Dolly on tour about two years ago. She had to act out every single lyric--jus the way they do in junior high. Maybe it's the way she was directed. The only time she was funny was in the "Motherhood March".

I'm going to go with the direction. I saw her in a musical called ONLY A KINGDOM and she was brilliant.

She's done it. In Pennsylvania.
Perhaps she was so bad that she doesn't want to admit it.
