"Everyone is forced into buying insurance. Yeah, that's something we should celebrate. Personal freedom being stolen from you is always something worth celebrating."

That's a very dramatic soundbite.

It sounds almost like something Michele Bachman would say. Except...it doesn't really work for those of us who already buy insurance...nothing is being stolen from us. I still have just as much personal freedom today, as I had yesterday.

It's a shame that single payer wasn't included. But, I'm hoping that at the very least, Alan Grayson's bill, that would allow everyone to buy into Medicare starts getting some traction.

"Yes Goth we should have continued to let insurance companies deny coverage to 3 year olds for pre existing conditions. Yes we should continue to let insurance companies cancel coverage when we become sick. These were all good things."

The topic I raised was mandatory health insurance. How is anything you said related to that topic? What are people going to do when they have to make the decision between paying for their mandatory healthcare or buying food? Forcing people to buy healthcare doesn't solve any problems. It's just another way of taxing people into submission.

This coming from George W. Bush's number one supporter and apologist would have made me spit my coffee on the computer screen if I hadn't inadvertently vomited instead.

Because it's not a big deal. A very small percentage of people will be able to buy coverage. Don't we require people to buy car insurance if they want to drive?

Why doesn't anybody bring up the CBO estimates of massive savings over time this bill will create unless (unless!) the reactionaries don't dedicate their lives to gutting the law from here to eternity?

I'm far from a single-issue voter. But I will say, as someone with a pre-existing condition who once spent the better part of a year without health insurance, this is the biggest reason I supported President Obama. A perfect bill? No. But I'm incredibly grateful for this first step.

"Don't we require people to buy car insurance if they want to drive?"

False analogy

We have the choice whether we want to buy a car or not. Also each state has different regulations regarding car insurance.

I think saying this bill is a step towards a communist utopia is a false analogy. But I hope you're party keep fighting that fight. I think it will do wonders for them election time.

I say this grudgingly, because I am not a fan, but Nancy Pelosi deserves soooooo much credit for this accomplishment. Many significant changes, particularly social changes, have taken place incrementally. So, while this is far from a final step, it is an important and necessary first step in making America a better place.

Here are ten benefits which come online within six months of the President's signature on the health care bill:

1. Adult children may remain as dependents on their parents’ policy until their 27th birthday
2. Children under age 19 may not be excluded for pre-existing conditions
3. No more lifetime or annual caps on coverage
4. Free preventative care for all
5. Adults with pre-existing conditions may buy into a national high-risk pool until the exchanges come online. While these will not be cheap, they’re still better than total exclusion and get some benefit from a wider pool of insureds.
6. Small businesses will be entitled to a tax credit for 2009 and 2010, which could be as much as 50% of what they pay for employees’ health insurance.
7. The “donut hole” closes for Medicare patients, making prescription medications more affordable for seniors.
8. Requirement that all insurers must post their balance sheets on the Internet and fully disclose administrative costs, executive compensation packages, and benefit payments.
9. Authorizes early funding of community health centers in all 50 states (Bernie Sanders’ amendment). Community health centers provide primary, dental and vision services to people in the community, based on a sliding scale for payment according to ability to pay.
10. AND no more rescissions. Effective immediately, you can't lose your insurance because you get sick.

#4- Qualified health plans will have to provide – with no cost-sharing – immunizations and other preventive health services for infants, children, and adolescents.

Everyone is forced into buying insurance. Yeah, that's something we should celebrate. Personal freedom being stolen from you is always something worth celebrating.

It's sort of like paying taxes or having a Social Security Card. You have the "freedom" not to participate, but if you don't, then you are willing to accept that you will have to pay a penalty.

What are people going to do when they have to make the decision between paying for their mandatory healthcare or buying food?

What do you think happens when people who can't afford health care get seriously ill?

FREE PREVENTIVE CARE UNDER NEW PRIVATE PLANS—Requires new private plans to cover preventive services with no co?payments and with preventive services being exempt from deductibles. Effective 6 months after enactment.

FREE PREVENTIVE CARE UNDER MEDICARE—Eliminates co?payments for preventive services and exempts preventive services from deductibles under the Medicare program.

I think that all plans are required to cover preventative care w/no deductible starting in 2014 but I can't find it. There is just TOO MUCH COVERAGE!

I keep seeing my friends who were army brats screaming that they don't want socialized health care. Isn't that basically what they were raised with if their fathers were in the military?

JG, yes. How daft can some people be? I know of a cop who was bitching about it, too. A person who will enjoy 100% taxpayer-funded medical for THE REST OF HIS LIFE.
