No, Taz, I am well aware of that. People just keep saying, "Well, this is the first step..." blah, blah.

I keep seeing my friends who were army brats screaming that they don't want socialized health care. Isn't that basically what they were raised with if their fathers were in the military?

having worked at a VA myself, i can tell you that opinions are widely varied. some vets swear by it (will drive > 300 miles with crushing chest pain), while others hate it. this actually extended to providers, as well--one of my colleagues said he would never take a loved one to a VA if they were sick.

OTOH, there were certainly a lot of perks that people failed to acknowledge. for instance, when i left, it was a $7/month copay for ALL your meds. if you have something chronic and debilitating, like lupus, paying $7 for a WHOLE MONTH of mycophenolate mofetil (otherwise ~ $800/month) is not bad at all.

i also thought their record keeping system is second to none.

This struggle has always been about (mis)information. The GOP, with the assistance of the media, has turned this into a soundbyte battle. Even when the public option is completely removed from the bill, the GOP still refers to it as 'a government takeover of healthcare', and the supposedly moderate Republicans still won't vote for it. And some of the 'moderate' Dems are even more moronic. Take Blanche Lincoln, for example. She voted for the Senate bill, which included the deals put in for folks like Ben Nelson. Now, she has stated that she will vote against the reconciliation bill to remove such deals. She deserves to be voted out of office.

The Dems have 7+ months before the midterms in which to get the message out about what's in, and what's not in, this bill.

I just lost a good friend over this debate. Because some information I read did not coincide with hers and with a conversation we had months ago, she attacked my character, said I deceived people and that she couldn't trust me anymore. She then attacked my other close friends that she has never met. She crossed a line. Needless to say she has been unfriended!

It is amazing how polarized people have become in the past few years over political issues. More than I can remember.

For me, it is a sad day but I am happy the bill was passed.

I have said the same thing. Others have said, "No... it's always this bad." I don't think so.

I agree, it has gotten much worse.

I'm trying to figure out why some people who do not have insurance at the current time are against having affordable health care.

i have to admit, i don't quite get it, either. especially in this environment, it seems like no matter how skilled or experienced you are, you could lose your job at any time. for many, your health insurance would quickly follow (cobra policies nonwithstanding). then you are one medical emergency away from total destruction of your finances. who wouldn't want help in that situation? and it doesn't matter if you "behave" (no smoking, drinking, drugs)--some crazy yahoo who boozed up before getting behind the wheel is enough to put you in the hospital.

the argument that people should be able to take care of themselves doesn't hold water at all. i can't imagine anyone in the top 10% earning bracket has $100-200K just sitting around in the event of a medical emergency--except, perhaps, if one is expected to sell one's home!

people are (legitimately) complaining about being forced to buy insurance, but i confess i don't get that, either. didn't these same folks boo a public option off the table (keyword being "option")? what do people want?

Just moments ago a caller on HLN news said that he is afraid how it is going to go when someone knocks on his door in 2014 because he doesn't have healthcare. That says to me he doesn't expect to have it and isn't planning on getting it.

I am realted to and know a lot of Republicans. Gay-lovin' Republicans, but that is neither here nor there.

Every single time I've tried to have this conversation, it comes up that I once was not covered and had a pre-existing condition that caused me not to be able to buy healthcare. It was a terrifying year (well...just under a year). And every single time, the people I was talking with simply disregarded my experience. And, as it turns out, they never actually experienced that themselves. So...for so many people, this kind of this is theoretical, so they can live in this perfect idealogical utopia. And panic in this theoretical world of death panels and forced abortions. But that never deals with reality.

I had the same argument with an old friend over gay marriage. He fully supports it (even spoke to the Log Cabin Republicans) but only through legislative means/will of the people kind of ways. I finally had to tell him I couldn't talk to him about that any more...because he was happily married to his wife and therefore had no tangible idea of what it truly means to be kept from marrying the person you fall in love with. And so, it was all theory and ideology...not reality.

Yeah, I don't have insurance now because I was dropped from my parent's plan after I finished college, which I expected. And my cuttrent job doesn't offer it. It terrifies me to worry that I can't afford to even just go to the doctor for minor problems because it will cost an arm and a leg. Makes me wonder what these people who don't want anything do. I know some go to the Emergency Room for everything.

Oh, and I just have to add that it is hilarious reading what people are responding to a Deacon from the church I used to when he complained about this on Facebook. All I have to say is if you don't like it and really feel that it corrupts the USA, go away and don't come back.

I'm trying to figure out why some people who do not have insurance at the current time are against having affordable health care.

Some people who do not want to buy insurance do so because they don't want to have to pay for anything. Thus, they rant about the "theft" of their "freedom" by being "forced" to buy insurance. Others scream "socialist" because they have no idea what it means, but they heard it on Fox and it must be something evil.

I haven't had to use my insurance in years. I became unemployed, now have no insurance and what happens? 3 1/3 weeks ago I slip on black ice, get taken by ambulance to the hospital and found that I fractured/broke my right ankle. I had surgery the Friday before last (I have a plate and a pin in my ankle), am in my 3rd of what will be 5 casts and am on crutches. I won't be able to walk on my own until near the end of April. Go figure. For all of the years I had coverage I have had one minor thing happen. And the charge for treatment came in at less than a dollar under my deductible so I had to pay for it anyway! And now being unemployed, I have to pay for all of this. Granted it is nowhere near the actual cost but I am already in the hundreds of dollars.

uncageg, that's exactly what I'm worried about. I lost my health insurance two weeks ago, on my birthday, as my parents' insurance no longer covers me. I was hired last year for a full time job, with benefits. Over the year, my hours were cut. Currently, I'm being held at 35 hours a week- just under full time, so I can't qualify for health insurance. I don't have any serious conditions; my allergies are managed by over-the-counter drugs that I can afford out of pocket. But now I have this constant fear in the back of my head- every time someone swerves towards my car in traffic, or when I feel a pang in my abdomen- that if something serious happens to me, I will never be able to afford it. I just turned 25. I shouldn't be worrying that stepping off a curb one split second too soon could bankrupt me.

My father was against the health care bill. I'm still baffled how he can see my situation, how I'm uninsured through no fault of my own and can't afford the $150+ a month individual plans, and still believe there's nothing wrong with the system. I don't understand why he can't project how many millions of others out there are like me.

Where did you find a $150 a month individual plan?! I pay like $280 and that's with a huge deductible, $30 GP copay, $50 specialist copay and 50/50 on prescriptions. One of my prescriptions is like $280 a month. I can't afford to pay $140 for one prescription. Since it's just something I take when I need it, I will just buy 10 pills at a time, which is $48. It's crazy.

I have health insurance through my employer and my share of the premiums is more than $150 a month. The total cost of my coverage as part of a large group plan is over $500 a month.

Some "Sorry to see you go!" mailer I received from my father's provider. I misspoke, it's just a COBRA type thing, not real insurance for the long term. If that price exists, it's probably the bare minimum plan, for young men in perfect health with no family history of any disease ever. Methuselah might have qualified. I'm not that optimistic about my own options. The individual plan from my father's insurance provider is "only" $443.02 a month.

Really apropos of nothing, but this this seems to be the place for it - every person I have spoken to personally who lives in a country with a single payer system has had nothing negative to say about it.
