"Who, exactly, would ever refuse affordable health care?"
Well, Diva, apparently these 10 states would (see link).
LET THE LAW SUITS BEGIN!
Their case is weak, if they're truly fighting the legality of this bill. I would think it's just as legal as requiring U.S. citizens to pay into Social Security.

I'm glad it passed and all, but I fear that it's gonna be one of those things that ain't as easy as it seems, like when all that mortgage modification was supposed to help out struggling homeowners and obscene amount of people STILL couldn't get help.
I hope that at the very least, the pre-existing condition reform stands.

Mister Matt, I welcome affordable healthcare.
I am sure some won't agree with me, but this has been an issue for many years. The insurance companies have been banking off of us. Americans didn't really rise to the occasion, so to speak, to stop what they were doing. Someone had to do it and I am glad this President and the Democrats (Well most of them!) stepped in and basically said "no more". And for those against this who have decided they don't want to buy healthcare, let's see how they feel when they get sick or hit by a bus.

"All of the attorneys general in the 10 states mentioned by McCollum are Republican, but McCollum said the lawsuit would be about the law and not politics."
Yea. Right.
And yes, uncageg, you are right. It's all about money with those people who are yelling the most, all about the money they can't steal from sick people.

Really apropos of nothing, but this this seems to be the place for it - every person I have spoken to personally who lives in a country with a single payer system has had nothing negative to say about it.
PRS, my better half LOVES it. It's just something she never has to think about. Yes, the taxes are high, but there's free health care, around a $180 cap on all prescriptions for the year (which can be paid as you get them or broken up over the 12 month period), sick leave for up to 3 years that pays 80% of your total income, 16 months of maternity to split between the parents at 100% of your income for the first 3 months and 80% after that, free dental care including braces up to age 19, it includes chiropractic and therapy. Unemployment benefits are 80% of your income. Preschool is free. Elementary through high school is free with a hot lunch provided. The last two years of high school, ages 18 & 19, are career specific. College and grad school are free, plus you get a small education stipend for food and books. (It's tiny so it has to be stretched.) Yes, there are some negatives, but the positives are pretty damn positive.
Riddle me this, people... My boss gets all his talking points from right wing radio. The big discussion today is that an Executive order doesn't trump law, so Obama's promised executive order to ban any abortion coverage is crap. Is this true? If an EO doesn't trump law, what's the point?

Posted: 3/22/10 at 9:13pmSomeone correct me if I am wrong but doesn't the executive order only stand for the time that the President who signed it is in office? Or would this be different?

The executive order was a redonkuous bow to fetus fetishists. What does it say - "Even though it's long been established that no federal money will touch abortion payments, but this time we really really mean it"?
I had a surgery in January that I'm still getting bills for (I think I've gotten five separate ones). A friend of mine in Canada was like "Hospital bill? What's that?"

Well according to the friend who told me our friendship was over today, Canada's healthcare system is broken and crap. Our friendship ended over a discussion of Canada's healthcare system. I had read that it wasn't as bad as people are saying. She disagrees. Instead of discussing it, and me finding out I may have been wrong, she tore into me and decided she can't trust me because I posted false information in a Facebook discussion. If I am wrong, I will own up to it. But the source she quoted was not, from what I checked into, was not a totally reputable on and a far right wing publication.
Sorry. I had to vent a bit there!

Posted: 3/22/10 at 9:49pmEveryone wants to talk about Canada because they are closest and yes, they have had some bad scenarios, but I don't know a single Swede who thinks their health care is crap.
#85Happy Health Care!
Posted: 3/22/10 at 10:09pmWell what got me is that she and other people were going on and on about Canadian's coming to the US for treatment but didn't want to hear anything about us getting cheaper prescription drugs from Canada.

Well, I figured my parents would disagree with me, and they did. My dad just told me that I could use the charity care system at the hospital on the 3 days a week that the clinic is actually open, and go to the emergency room and sell my kidney or another body part to afford it the other days. The interesting part is that he has no idea where the money comes from to support that. Plus, I have no idea how much they can do for free. There has to be some catch. It just seems like one of those things that would.

She is actually a very nice, intelligent and giving person until politics comes up. But this falling out showed me another side of her. One I didn't think was as intense and nasty as it turned out to be. I decided I didn't like it, let her know it and the friendship is over. I was so upset I was shaking when I got her e-mail yesterday morning telling me she can't trust me but she crossed a line. She is a prime example og how polarized some people have become within a party.
Oh, I took a percoset and was over it by mid afternoon!

Interesting Conservative Journalist's Opinion
#91Happy Health Care!
Posted: 3/23/10 at 11:01amThe most annoying thing was the Republicans constanly saying that they weren't included. They went into this with an agenda. From what I remember, they said it would be Obama's Waterloo before they even started work on the bill. So they wanted it to fail from the beginning.

From the article that JerseyGirl2 linked:
"No illusions please: This bill will not be repealed. Even if Republicans scored a 1994 style landslide in November, how many votes could we muster to re-open the “doughnut hole” and charge seniors more for prescription drugs? How many votes to re-allow insurers to rescind policies when they discover a pre-existing condition? How many votes to banish 25 year olds from their parents’ insurance coverage? And even if the votes were there – would President Obama sign such a repeal?"
What drives me crazy is how they wish they COULD find a way to rescind policies for pre-existing conditions, or to deny young adults coverage, and that they WANT to help insurance companies find ways to charge seniors more money for their medicine. It's just so disgusting and mean spirited.

Now that the healthcare reform is law, this is what the GOP is running on:
* allowing insurers unfettered rate hikes
* allowing insurers to drop coverage on premium paying customers
* increasing the deficit
* increasing senior citizens' prescription costs
* denying healthcare to millions of Americans
Perhaps I'm naive, perhaps I'm overly optimistic, but I think that's a hard sell.

It is a hard sell. But I hope they keep fighting the fight!
New poll indicates Americans happy that health care passed
#96Happy Health Care!
Posted: 3/24/10 at 10:46amWell, it's not as if the GOP will ever acknowledge that poll or any other that favors this bill.
