I agree with Penguin. I think it's best to start with HBP and if it goes well we can start over from the beginning.

I will start a new thread when we begin, but I wanted to see if anyone was actually interested before creating a brand new thread for it.

So we have two votes for chapter by chapter and one for a Monday start date. Anyone else?

Go Yoda. Go Yoda. Go Yoda. Go Yoda!

Seriously, this seems like a fun idea - a new thread would be ideal and I am on board.

Siren, I actually got the idea from a similar chapter by chapter discussion of OotP on a listserv. I think it helps to have some sort of structure to the discussion, but if everyone else wants to just do an informal talk I'm up for that too.

Penguin, you know that I wanted to moderate from the beginning, but didn't want to upset anyone since the whole thing was Tiff's idea.

It would probably be best to start up on Monday since that would give me the weekend to get ahead of the discussion in summaries and questions, plus I'll be spending 5 hours of Saturday in class and probably unable to post during that time.

Oooh this is an awesome idea! I've only read the book twice, currently rereading OoTP, but I could dust off HBP as well...

I think we have to go chapter by chapter.

The lack of structure coupled with different reading speeds for different people could result in people getting discouraged and distracted easily.

I'm pissed that Patty ignored my question. Evil Patty.

I just remembered what chapter 1 of Half-Blood Prince was, and then got really excited. This'll be fun!

Sorry, I missed it:

Does your name have to do with HP, Patronus? It always makes me think of it.

Yep! Okay, I just guaranteed that I'd be late for work to do that. You owe me.

Bye all!

Holy smokes, how did I miss this? Thanks, Yoda, for taking the reigns. I was hoping we'd start a mini-HP book club on this! Monday sounds good. I've just started OOTP again (I'm only at the part where Lupin et al. arrive at Privet Drive), so give me the weekend to finish up, and a Monday start date for HBP sounds fabu!

Yoda is prepping questions and a chapter summary.
We will be going chapter by chapter on Monday, but a new thread is coming this weekend. re: Harry Potter Fans

How is Brokeback Mountain Potter related?? Unless...

I blame the fact my last post made no sense at all on my pounding headache.

carry on.

Tiff you know you are a Lupin-Sirius shipper.

Oh sure, now that you've edited, my post makes absolutely no sense.

And Lupin-Sirius, not so much, but I'm a total Snape-Sirius shipper. (Especially if Sirius had been played by Pierce Brosnan like I'd originally hoped. re: Harry Potter Fans)

What's with Gary Oldman not being signed on for HP5 yet? That troubles me.

That is really odd, it would be IMPOSIBLE to cut him out of the thing entirely...

Snape- Sirius is much better- I would have rather seen Oldman as Lupin and Brosnan (or someone else "pretty" as Sirius as well.)

Okay, so the plan is to start a Chapter by Chapter discussion this coming Monday. Please make sure you read the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, The Other Minister, by then.

If you have any ideas for discussion questions please PM me. I'll probably need help with the first one.

I'll get a new thread started either tonight or tomorrow to hopefully recruit some more people.

Penguin, thank you for speaking for me. My hands are (literally) full at work today with some books that require my undivided attention.

ETA: Wait you're right Tiff I went to find the information and found an update confirming that there are currently no plans for him to appear in the film, what's up with that!?

Gary Oldman has been signed to do OotP, the confusion began because he is not needed for filming until later. Give me a minute and I'll find the link.

By the way, I once read a full blown theory about how Snape is in fact Harry's father and Lilly only married James to be his beard and hide his relationship with Sirius. Anyone wondering why I don't read that particular listserv anymore?

OK I must confess myself an ACTUAL Sirius/Lupin shipper *blushes* just a little guilty pleasure...not like I had expected it to happen when reading the series, just something cute for fanfiction...

Wow and I think that is the most farfetched theory I've ever read *blinks* there is actually someone out there that would believe this to be true? Wow just wow...

BTW...I KNOW Anji will join in on this one.

How in the blue heavens did I miss this entire thread until now??

YES, I am in for a book discussion, I vote for chapter by chapter, and I totally think YM78 should lead. Oh, and HP6, HP3, HP5, HP4, HP2, HP1 in that order.

And I have entire Twinkie factories of theories- Dumbledore, horcruxes, Snape, Percy and all. I am actually writing a term paper on HP right now- well, not HP exactly, but HP in conjunction with Malory's "Le Morte D'Arthur". There are incredible parallels in Arthurian myth to the HP story and characters. Okay, geekout over. re: Harry Potter Fans

Anji, that is something Yoda will REALLY want to know about, she is all about the Arthur legend! (I am very interested as well.)
I also love the "book 6" love. This should be FUN!

Anjilly, that is something that I will very much want to read when you're done. To threadjack for a moment, my unofficial concentration (unofficial because we didn't have them) in undergrad was the Arthurian Legend. If I ever get around to writing a book it is going to be about the way each successive culture has claimed Guinevere and changed her to suit their needs.

Neat! Taking the threadjack and and tying it in to bring this whole thread full circle now: I only read GOOD fan fiction, i.e. both the premise and the writing have to be decent to get my attention. There is a great novel-length fic with roots in Arthurian legend (Pendragon, Morrigan, Macha, Badb)that focuses on Ginny (given name: Ginevra (source: JKR interview), which is the Italian form of Guinevere).

Threadjack becomes OT!
