The list of the Top 1000 names for each gender in the USA in 2006 was released today.

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

The top three names for both boys and girls stayed the same.
Here are the new top 10s

1. Emily
2. Emma
3. Madison
4. Isabella
5. Ava
6. Abigail
7. Olivia
8. Hannah
9. Sophia
10. Samantha

1. Jacob
2. Michael
3. Joshua
4. Ethan
5. Matthew
6. Daniel
7. Christopher
8. Andrew
9. Anthony
10. William

Other notable things:
- Nevaeh (aka Heaven-spelled-backward) is now #43. And I'm puzzled by how Neveah (aka Heaven-misspelled-backward) is #996.
- Addison made a huge jump (thanks to Grey's Anatomy).
- Evangeline, Beatrice, Dahlia, and Scarlet are some of the new names to enter the top 1000.
- Aiden may not be in the top 10, but when you combine all 9 (yes, NINE!) spellings of it that made the top 1000 (including Aden, Ayden, Aidan, etc.), it EASILY becomes the #1 male name. There are also several spellings of Caden & Jayden on there, and even Zayden!
- There were more Allysons born than Allisons in 2006.
- Kayla, Jayla, and Layla are all in the top 100

I've never understood the popularity of Nevaeh or Neveah or however many other ways it's spelled. It sounds too much like Nivea.

1. Emily

Of course. And I don't think of that as a good name. I pity every other girl whose name is Emily who must always ask "which one?" when her name is called for role.

You mean like Ashley, Jennifer and Jessica have for the past 20 years? All popular names have the same issue.

And I'm puzzled by how Neveah (aka Heaven-misspelled-backward) is #996.

My name isn't, nor are my two favorite names that I want to name my kids. I'm glad for that, I like names that are a little unique.

I think it's funny how at the beginning of the 20th Century there were a whole different set of names.

I didn't say they don't, my heart goes out to them as well.

My name is never on the most popular list, but it isn't an unknown weird name. In fact, it's very average and American. But there just aren't a lot of them.

Three Ashleys in my fifth grade class. Ridiculous. My parents swear the name wasn't popular when they named me. Obviously, it was.

However, apparently the names I like for girls are becoming more and more popular.

In 2000 my name was number 10 on the most popular girls' list. There's another girl named alexis in my class, and there are at least five of us in my school. Like Ashley said, it wasn't a common name when she gave it to me. But I've always hated my name.

I'm waiting for D'Sh'Qu'annaiquinieeshaiett'a (pronounced "Becky", of course) to make the list.

Or, what were the ones we were talking about back in September? Oranjello? Lemonjello?

It's interesting to check out names by state.

I have been noticing a lot of "Grace"s in my primary grades (I think more than any other name) but it wasn't in the top 10, check the state breakdown and it's #2 for Minnesota.

I heard on the radio yesterday that Katrina became a MORE popular name in Louisiana and Mississippi in the past 2 years, but it's dropped everywhere else.

I have become rather fond of Addison as a name for a girl, actually.

I'm sick of being a Joshua.

Perhaps I'll change it to Trevvyre or something...
