The list of the Top 1000 names for each gender in the USA in 2006 was released today.
http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/
The top three names for both boys and girls stayed the same.
Here are the new top 10s
1. Emily
2. Emma
3. Madison
4. Isabella
5. Ava
6. Abigail
7. Olivia
8. Hannah
9. Sophia
10. Samantha
1. Jacob
2. Michael
3. Joshua
4. Ethan
5. Matthew
6. Daniel
7. Christopher
8. Andrew
9. Anthony
10. William
Other notable things:
- Nevaeh (aka Heaven-spelled-backward) is now #43. And I'm puzzled by how Neveah (aka Heaven-misspelled-backward) is #996.
- Addison made a huge jump (thanks to Grey's Anatomy).
- Evangeline, Beatrice, Dahlia, and Scarlet are some of the new names to enter the top 1000.
- Aiden may not be in the top 10, but when you combine all 9 (yes, NINE!) spellings of it that made the top 1000 (including Aden, Ayden, Aidan, etc.), it EASILY becomes the #1 male name. There are also several spellings of Caden & Jayden on there, and even Zayden!
- There were more Allysons born than Allisons in 2006.
- Kayla, Jayla, and Layla are all in the top 100

Posted: 5/12/07 at 1:06amI've never understood the popularity of Nevaeh or Neveah or however many other ways it's spelled. It sounds too much like Nivea.

1. Emily
Of course. And I don't think of that as a good name. I pity every other girl whose name is Emily who must always ask "which one?" when her name is called for role.

You mean like Ashley, Jennifer and Jessica have for the past 20 years? All popular names have the same issue.

Have you not seen Dollypop's threads at the beginning of each new semester?

Posted: 5/12/07 at 2:39amMy name isn't, nor are my two favorite names that I want to name my kids. I'm glad for that, I like names that are a little unique.

I didn't say they don't, my heart goes out to them as well.
#12re: Hottest Baby Names of 2006
Posted: 5/12/07 at 9:39amMy name is never on the most popular list, but it isn't an unknown weird name. In fact, it's very average and American. But there just aren't a lot of them.

Three Ashleys in my fifth grade class. Ridiculous. My parents swear the name wasn't popular when they named me. Obviously, it was.
However, apparently the names I like for girls are becoming more and more popular.

Posted: 5/12/07 at 11:16amIn 2000 my name was number 10 on the most popular girls' list. There's another girl named alexis in my class, and there are at least five of us in my school. Like Ashley said, it wasn't a common name when she gave it to me. But I've always hated my name.

oddly enough for as "classic" as people say my name is, it never appears on lists like this.
fyi, I'm kinda fond of the name Jill....right Jilly?

Posted: 5/12/07 at 11:56amoranjello and lemonjello are from the book Freakonomics... that book has a great chapter on names...

It's interesting to check out names by state.
I have been noticing a lot of "Grace"s in my primary grades (I think more than any other name) but it wasn't in the top 10, check the state breakdown and it's #2 for Minnesota.

Posted: 5/12/07 at 1:11pmI heard on the radio yesterday that Katrina became a MORE popular name in Louisiana and Mississippi in the past 2 years, but it's dropped everywhere else.

My name has been in the top twelve every year for fifteen years. Wow.
I have become rather fond of Addison as a name for a girl, actually.

I'm sick of being a Joshua.
Perhaps I'll change it to Trevvyre or something...
