THe captain didn't walk around with the riding crop all the time in real life. He only used it on special nights . . . and this really WAS one of Maria's favorite things!!

Somewhere in my youth or childhood I must have done something good.

I always thought Rolf and Friedrick would have made a cuter couple than Rolf and Liesl, who looks 16 going on 21. Didn't Friedrick look mighty happy when Maria made him the flowery spring outfit?? Kurt was the butch brother in that clan.
Also, the real Mother Abbess had never heard a R&H tune, much less sang one to a psotulant.
Chris Plummer is also hotter than the real Von Trapp.

How come the nuns complain about Maria singing in the abbey -- when they're doing the exact same thing while compalining about Maria?

Rumor has it that Fraulein Kost was the previous nanny.

Lyrics to the laundry song that was cut in previews.
Maria (on her knees scrubbing another nun's underwear):
It must be soft and white, clean and bright
Scrubbing in my own little corner
Even though my undies are worner

Calvin, I think the rules were against postulants singing in the abbey. Thus, the veteran nuns and the Mother Abbess ("Climb Ev'ry Mountain) were allowed to sing to their heart's content.
Another innacuracy: the eldest child was actually a boy. Also, the character of Rolf was invented to give the story a secondary romance, not unlike all the other R&H musicals.

SM2---It's perfectly fine to invent a Hitler youth when you need to generate a budding romance.

You know what? Maria was a real creep.
Her sister was a much nicer person.
I think she came from a better family.
