re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay?

I'm not coming out to either of my parents for a long time. A few of my closest friends have advised me to just keep it to myself for as long as I feel and do as I gentlemanly please (no pun intended). Best advice would be to be honest, brave, and simple.

Yes, that's an option most people seem to forget. You don't NEED to come out to your parents if you feel that it'll just make the situation worse. Coming out is unique for everyone, and we all come from different backgrounds, lifestyles and families; it's easier for some than others. If you're uncomfortable or not ready to share your sexuality with your parents yet, don't feel obligated to do it.

One thing that is rarely discussed but is a pertinent issue is one's background, ethnicity, or culture. I've come out to everyone I know (including siblings), except my parents, simply because they're uber-traditional Chinese parents (we're talking immigrants from rural farming China here, folks). They're already queasy about my sister dating a white man; as their only son, the sky would fall if they knew I was gay. I can handle being disowned, but the news would kill my father and I'm sure my mother, who's already teetering on the edge of sanity re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay?, would surely go crazy. I've heard of other young, gay Chinese men who came out to their parents and the outcome was catastrophic; I'm not prepared for that, so I don't tell them.

I'm a straight gal, so you can take my thoughts or leave them, since I'm obviously no expert on this topic. re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay? But I will agree with not telling your parents until both you AND they are ready to handle it. My best friend is gay and grew up in the same kind of environment that I did - very conservative, especially about sex. He tried to tell his mom he was gay, but she was having such a hard time wrapping her mind around it that he finally just dropped it. She still thinks that he and I are going to marry and have lots of babies someday, and to this we just say, "whatever." He figures that when she's more ready to accept the whole concept of him having a boyfriend, he'll bring it up again. Gay or straight, we all have things that we don't feel any need to tell our parents about. If you want to tell your parents, I think that's great; but if not, don't feel like you "have to." From one 20-year-old to another; follow your heart, and good luck!

When my brother-in-law came out five years ago, he was married with a young child. He had gotten married at twenty-one to one of his closest friends (they are still close now, as well). He later revealed that all through there thirteen year marriage, he had had affairs with men on the side.

Hahaha, Rath. My post was serious, though. He now happily lives with his boyfriend. They are in the process of adopting a child.

BlueWiz and frontrowcentre2-

Just curious, have you ever seen Ang Lee's film The Wedding Banquet? It's an excellent film. A look at a young, gay Chinese man living in America who resorts to deception to please his parents, and the hilarious, if not mildly disastrous aftermath.

re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay?

THE WEDDING BANQUET was much more serious than i imagined it would be (i guess from the previews) but i like that film very much.

I love THE WEDDING BANQUET (and Ang Lee). It's rather naively optimistic, but the last image of the film (with the father's arms rising up like a bird) is very poetic.

There are a few other films out there, too, that deal with the whole Chinese-American/Canadian experience (not just coming out): DOUBLE HAPPINESS is a memorable one, with the great Sandra Oh in an award-winning star turn.

re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay?

My parents at first went through the whole It's just a phase...You're just experimenting thing. They suggested that I go out with girls to see if I had any interest. After a few months, though, they finally realized that I was actually gay and wasn't just experiementing. I don't consider myself to be very flamboyant, but there are certain parts of the gay stereotype that fit me to a T:

-95 percent of my close friends are female
-I see a show in New York weekly
-My main hobby is collecting cast albums
-My favorite shows are Will and Grace, Desperate Housewives, Six Feet Under and Sex and the City
-I'm obsessed with cleanliness

re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay?

I have known I was gay since I was 13...never did anything about it. I never dated girls because I knew it was a waste of my time. I never approached guys becuase I did not want anyone to know I was gay and I did not want to be ostracized. All I wanted (and still want) is for everyone to like me and accept me.

Finally, in March 2005, at age 23, I realized I wanted to finally have a personal life. Met a guy, we hit it off, he spent some time at my house in Westchester while my parents were on vacation and of course the neighbors saw.

The day my mom gets back:
Neighbor: "I see that Alberto had a friend over while you were away."
Mom: "Oh, I did not know about this."

Then of course my mom asks me about my "friend" who was over the house and I could do nothing but tell her the truth. I have wanted to tell her for the longest time and I guess this is just how it played out. She was great...said she didn't know, but kind of had a clue since I had never ever spoken about having a girlfriend or having kids. She then told my dad about it a week later when he asked "Why has Alberto been spending so much time out lately?" This was very atypical for me since I was always the perfect child, never drank, never did drugs (still don't), home early, always told the truth...blah blah blah. He was not as supportive as she was, but so far he is outnumbered. I have only been out for two months and all of my friends have accepted me as well as my mom, my brother and my aunt.

I am much happier now that I am able to be myself. Holding back for 10 years was extremely unhealthy and has definitely screwed with my head a little. Ultimately though, coming out to your friends and family will only allow you to be happier as a person because you will be able to be truthful to yourself and to others. It was also great to have a boyfriend who supported me as I came out in such a late stage (23 is late compared to most people) of my life. Although we are no longer together, I hope we can remain good friends because regardless of how we feel about each other, he has helped me so much and I will always be grateful. Thanks for everything.

re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay?

Here's one for you...

You call up your mother right before going to visit, and you say "Mom, I'm bringing home someone special", but say nothing more. If they assume it's a girl...well, that's their assumption, which exempts you from fault in the very near future...
Then, you show up on the doorstep with your boyfriend, and introduce them, and say "Mom, this is that special someone..."

Actually, I'm kidding. It would be worse on your boyfriend then you.

Here's the thing when telling members of the family. You will do it at the time that you feel is right. Don't force it upon yourself to do so, just do it when you feel ready. 85 percent of the time, parents will be accepting...well, after the first few days, or weeks...or years...

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay?

What a good thread.

I've been contemplating for half a year to tell my family within these next few weeks...but I don't know if I have the courage to do so yet. I doubt they will disown me. But...more than anything, I don't want to be the one to break their hearts...and I know I will. I'm Chinese so it's just a bad bad thing culturally. There's so much negativity and stereotype that associates with being gay...that...I feel like I will become a big disappointment to them. Why must I be the one to ruin their "normal" lives...and force them to deal with what the relatives/friends may say when they know? I don't want to do that to them.

And yet...I feel like I can't be who I am without telling them first. I can't do the whole "meet-someone-first-and-then-tell-them-later" thing. I would be living a lie...and I can't do that.

I'm torn as to what to do. re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay?

re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay?

my best friend did something like this:
"mom, dad....I'm gay" then put on his shoes and said "i'm going to get a pizza now so you can think it about and if you want to talk when I get back cool, if not, that is cool too" and then he left.

i called my mom sobbing with "I have to tell you something" when I started seeing my ex-girlfriend...i was so distraught that she assumed the worse and said "are you pregnant?" and when I said no her next question was "are you gay?"...which actually made me laugh b/c I didn't expect it. So, speaking from that rare breed of "non-lablers" I feel I can represent both sides...I am actually seeing a guy now, after 4 yrs with a woman, and my family is like "what the???" It was terrifying..the reverse outing...

re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay?

I asked my grandmother (who i lived with at the time, and she's a step, and quite young) if i could go out on a date on that Friday and she said "Sure. What's her name?" And I replied "James" and she kinda stood there, frozen, and said "no." and that was it.

re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay?

The night I told my moms...

I was 16.
We had been arguing over stupid stuff, and she said
"I don't like your attitude! You're grounded!"
We sat in silence for a while, and she said
"You're friends that you've been hanging out with. They're Lesbians, right?"
"Yes", I replied.
"What about the guys? Are they gay?"
"Maybe".
"Are you?"
I smiled. Now was the revolutionary moment. "Yes, Mother. I am gay." It was like coming up for air. The next twenty minutes consisting of more arguing and her crying, while I continued to dig the knife deeper. There was no way I was going to let her reaction effect me. Towards the end, she calmed down and admitted that what hurt her most of all was that we were so close, why did i keep this from her. The phone rang. I answered it, and it was a gay friend who wanted to go to a club, I told him that I'd call him back, and asked my mother if I could go out. It was 11 o' clock at night, but she said Yes anyway.
So much for being grounded.

She was cutting up potatoes for French fries, and her knife just stopped in mid-cut. It's quite humourous to think about.

That's a very telling sentence for sure. Parents (relatives, close friends too) ALWAYS no, or have a sense that there's something up...The more you hide it, the more you create mistrust, or misunderstanding, as if what you are (and are doing or wanting to do) is dirty or wrong or evil or whatever they might have built up in their minds. This is why EVERY coming out is so important and vital to gay/lesbian understanding and acceptance.

When you are ready, just tell them that you're happy, healthy(hopefully) and proud you have found your true self.

Good luck to you and all coming out.

singingbackup: SWEET puppy! you should resurrect the puppy thread with that one.

when BEING IN THE CLOSET is causing MORE STRESS in your life than BEING OUT OF THE CLOSET, then it's probably time to come out. also, make sure you have COME OUT TO YOURSELF and given yourself time to be comfortable with it before telling a bunch of other people, especially family. and when you DO come out, start with someone you KNOW will be supportive and understanding. developing that initial support group is VERY important!

re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay?

I'm currently in a position when my friends ask everybody if they're gay or not. When they asked me I didn't know what to say and felt a bit nervous. I'm in kind of a tight spot right now.
I'm not a gay stereotype. I'm a coincidence.

That seems really weird.
If they're not gay themselves, why do they care?

I don't know. That's another thing to add to the list of 'Why I should've stayed in private school'. I wish they wouldn't ask questions like that. It makes me feel uncomfortable. I don't know why but the kids at my school have added another definition to the word gay meaning 'stupid or retarded'. I hate it; it doesn't make sense to me. They don't make sense to me.

re: How Do You Tell Someone That You Are Gay?

I told my mother and step-father as soon as I moved out of the house - there was no way I was going to deal with being stuck under his roof when I didn't know what would happen. I actually thought it might kill him. Rather disappointingly, I was wrong.
