ugh Blades of glory was lame, and had i not been there with my friend i would have walked out.
CHuck and Larry looks like every adam sandler movie except Happy Gilmore, SH*T.
I refuse to see it on the basis that Adam sandler is terribly overrated and in need of a pretty extensive ass kicking

Will Arnett's character WAS annoying. Wasn't that the point of his character? He was annoying?
I thought Blades of Glory was great, a funny light comedy. Chuck and Larry, on the other hand, I will not be seeing.
I was pretty depressed when I saw the trailer for it with two friends a few weeks ago before Knocked Up. They laughed their heads off during the trailer and afterwards when I started talking about how it looked very homophobic and stupid besides, they told me to lighten up.
Oh, how the gap widens as we grow older.

The only reason I would consider going to this movie is Jessica Biel's ass.
Thanks to YouTube, I don't have to go see the movie.

"It's just Nathan Lane reinforcing every possible negative gay stereotype that irks me in that movie."
There's a thing called a DIRECTOR who tells the actor what to do.

Posted: 7/18/07 at 4:42pmHaving sat through too many "message" films on LOGO, I'm honestly not sure which is worse: Adam Sandler pretending to be gay, or gay and lesbian directors pretending to be directors. For a bunch of creative types, we sure know how to make some lousy movies about ourselves.

I am curious to see this film but don't want to put my money in their pockets so I am going to buy a ticket to Hairspray and sneak into Chuck and Larry.

"It's My Party" by Randall Kleiser. The Director of "The Blue Lagoon" fails to deliver with this maudlin AIDS memoir. The main character plans to commit suicide after a long celebration that reuinites all his friends, family and ex-lovers.
When, midway through the movie, he decides to postpone his death for a night I couldn't help myself and screamed out "NO! DO IT NOW!!"

>> what would be the stupidest of those message movies?
My lord, where to start. Mercifully, the titles are etched from my memory, but the one about the online chat with the guy who likes to have rough trade beat him and steal his car is right up there as a first-class winner. And then there's what my friend Randy and I call the "Wheat" series of films -- usually about some teenage boy in gay angst, and invariably there's a shot of him, shirtless, standing in a wheat field.
And lesbian films? Please, dont get me started on those. They make CHUCK AND LARRY look like Oscar material.

Early reviews are not good. However, I am sure it will be #1 at the box office. Bad movies do very well.
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry is the film that dares to say We're not gay. So NOT gay. In fact we are so not gay, we're gonna ogle Jessica Beil for like an hour. You wanna beer? I feel like I need a beer. Yeah, and I'll chase that down with some Jack Daniels straight from the bottle. Yup. So not gay. Dude, did I mention how not gay I was – so not gay that I tagged an entire shift crew at Hooters? All at once. Did I mention that? Yup. So not gay. But if I was, there'd be nothing wrong with that. So shut the **** up bigot.
Oh wait, theres more.
No, here every gay character is a terrible stereotype with zero depth. Because the movie isn't about being gay. It's about being straight and learning how intolerance affects those batting for the other side. And while there's nothing wrong with playing for that side, we're way over here. Batting for this team. The straight team. Dude, pass the beer and a porno mag. Hell there's even a moment where frat comedy god Adam Sandler himself turns to a roomful of people and (sounding almost depressed) says And don't use the word faggot anymore. That's a bad word. I know I used to use it a lot. But don't use it. Use it a lot? Dude, Adam, you built your entire ****ing career on using that word. Or iterations there of.

My friend knows a guy who completely missed the point of Brokeback Mountain. "Wow! I hated how they cheated on their wives like that!" Same with Far From Heaven. "I can't believe he would leave his wife like that!" And the odd thing? This man is actually gay.
I think the biggest problem (FFH didn't really have this problem) is that people go into Brokeback Mountain expecting the characters to represent the entire gay community. This is not true. They are, in fact, representing THEMSELVES and they are deeply...DEEPLY...flawed. That's what made BBM so koo in the first place. It was emotional through not being emotional.

Posted: 7/18/07 at 5:42pmLast night during Kathy Griffin's show on Bravo they had a promotional thing with Biel. I noticed she did not call the movie "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry", but simply "Chuck and Larry" as if to play down the fact that it was about a gay marriage..TO KATHY GRIFFIN'S AUDIENCE??????!!!!!

Mike Vissichelli, the president of FireFLAG/EMS, NYC's association of gay firefireghters issued this statement:
"While 'I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry' is a broad comedy, the reality is there are gay firefighters in many departments across the country, including the FDNY.
"The 'coming out' process in the movie mirrors what I, and many of my colleagues, have gone through on the job. Initially we may have dealt with disbelief, disdain, and even prejudice from our fellow firefighters.
"But significantly, as in our experiences, the film shows the process gay firefighters go through on the job as they move towards acceptance by their fellow firefighters. The film shows the journey that gay firefighters go through in their careers, the brotherhood of firefighters, and ultimately their respect for one another based on actions and deeds.
"Over the years, the FDNY and its members have become more supportive of gay firefighters and have made strides in improving how they are treated on the job. FireFLAG/EMS supports this progress and is actively involved in the department’s actions on gay-related issues.
"'Chuck and Larry' is, of course, a comedy and some of the humor may be considered offensive to some, but the growth of the principal characters during the course of the film is the ultimate measure of how to judge the intent and heart of the filmmakers."

Why wouldn't hating how they cheated on their wives be a legitimate feeling (reaction), to that film? It's what they did.

Posted: 7/19/07 at 10:12amThank you for posting that, Pal Joey. It is comforting to know that the film may not be as offensive as the ads make it out to be. I guess I can forgive the offensive ads if it gets people into the theatre to hear the message of tolerance and acceptance. Ah, the old...'I got a story about a virgin and a guy who hung out with a whore!...Now that I have you in CHURCH!!' routine, huh?

FireFLAG/EMS is a great organization. The sell really hot t-shirts to benefit the organization for $25 on their website. They have the the FireFLAG logo on the front and on the back it says:
...which gets you a lot of attention if you wear it to a bar.

THE REVIEWS ARE IN!
And the consensus is that the movie is trying to have it both ways. Hitting the audience with a barrage of homophobia and whatnot before suddenly turning around and saying (This is apparently a quote from the movie) "I'm not using faggot anymore. That's a bad word."
Berardinelli:
"Perhaps concerned that the overload of gay jokes might offend some audience members, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry turns into a full defense of gay rights and an applause of gay culture, including appearances by Lance Bass and Richard Chamberlain. It's a shock to the system when this example of puerile comedy turns into a pulpit-pounding sermon. The film's sledgehammer approach makes it more immature than earnest."
Entertainment Weekly:
"So if I'm reading the 'message' right in this lumbering, time-warp disco of a comedy about the heroism of firefighters, the preciousness of male bonding, the sanctity of family, and the glory of Jessica Biel's proudly real breasts, it's that gay men are marvelous, exotic, and hilarious creatures who have every right to equality under the law. And that it's very hurtful when they're discriminated against. Or beaten up. Or even shunned in communal firehouse showers, where straight colleagues are scared to pick up a dropped bar of soap. But if it's all the same to you, being straight is, you know, more regular. And, like, whew"
Hollywood Reporter:
"I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry" is a "gay" comedy created by straights who want to have it both ways: Hit the audience with a barrage of homophobia and gay jokes yet wind up with an ecumenical, politically correct embrace of all points of sexual orientation. It's the equivalent of that old Jerry Seinfeld bit where he mentions someone is gay but quickly adds, "Not that there's anything wrong with that." We even get the film's star, Adam Sandler, summing up what he has learned from his experiences pretending to be gay: Don't use the word "faggot," he lectures. It's hurtful."
As for BBM, it seemed as if the guy who said that did not UNDERSTAND why they were cheating on their wives. He said the same thing about Far From Heaven. (SPOILER) "I hated how he left his wife at the end!"

I saw a preview for this during FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER and my friends laughed at it and one leaned to me and said "Bet you wanna see that." [not sure if it was jokingly or serious.] I hit him and continued to sit through the preview.
