I'm ashamed of my "blonde" moment. Sorry, all. Thanks.

Gay men have been banned from donating blood since the 80's, I think.
You really never knew this, LH?
My first thought was 'seriously??' But I felt I was being unkind.
How on earth did you not know this?

I honestly never did, Kad. Call me shamefully ignorant or in denial I guess.
ETA: Thanks, Robbie. I feel like a heel. Let's all take a moment to laugh at the fool! I deserve it!

Where have you been? This isn't news.
There's a lot of people who aren't aware of this. If you've never gone to give blood it's not totally unreasonable that it's something you didn't know.
But...it's been something that's been discussed on here. And it was covered quite a bit in the media when the FDA was considering lifting the ban.
I'm very surprised if any adult gay man doesn't know this. If you're not gay, however, then I wouldn't be totally surprised.
everyone screws up from time to time.
But using the BLONDE stereotype as your out probably wasnt the best way to do it.
I suppose.
My Mother found out about it earlier this year and she FLIPPED THE F*CK OUT. We were sitting in the kitchen and for some reason this came up and she just lost it. She was screaming about bigotry and slamming the cabinets. I just sat back with a big ol' smile on my face laughing.

Gay for over three decades and married for over a decade, Robbie. Perhaps I just forgot about it, hence my shame. I should find a scapegoat for my ignorance... Roxy? Elaine?
I'd chalk it up to early dementia...but since you post here, you have NO EXCUSE! Why?
The Sound of Music SAVES LIVES!
i hate using a stereotype to fight another stereotype. like "blonde moment"

I knew this, but for some reason I thought that the policy had changed.
Guess I need to get out more often too.
More blood for me, I guess.

"More blood for me, I guess."
It sounds so sexy when you say it, Kad.
with blood in such short supply, its good that this is not true
...it is true.
you also can't give blood if you've had hepatitis. That's why I'm turned away.
Now how many of you genii knew THAT? aha!
Because you're gay, and the FDA banned all posts.
ETA: Jane...I knew that. There are actually a number of ways to become ineligible to donate blood. Live in London for a few months in the 80's or early 90's? Sorry!

In Quebec they have a hemophobia campaign trying to get the policy changed.
And right on cue, the blood donation folks at work come around asking for donors. Every since I made a stick of being asked publicly and having to turn them down again and again, (I actually shouted, 'I have sex with men. I am ineligible. Stop asking!' they now like to say, 'We know we can't ask YOU...but what about your other people??'
I understand the need, so I bite my tongue...but THESE BITCHES.
