I'm NOT a Fan of Facebook

Finally signed up today simply to post a comment on a colleague's article in HuffPost. Within seconds there were friend requests from all the folks whom I've been avoiding for 30 yrs including a few ex-girlfriends. I get that there's absolutely no notion of privacy any longer when we net denizens are all somehow algorithmically connected. But, I would have reached out decades ago if I wanted to be bothered. LinkedIn isn't so bad because most of the connect requests come from others within my industry.

If only there were gun control laws so it wouldn't be legal to hold a revolver to your head stopping you from deleting your profile.

Facebook is so lame now. EVERYONE uses it. Most of us are just on Instagram now.

Instagram's been over for two years. We all left that and went to ello. We got into the zen of not posting at ello. Then we all moved to . It's very exclusive.

How traumatic. I hope you're OK.

How many Instagram accounts do you have, Bilbo? It can't be nearly as many as you've had here.

Seriously. Log in once and there's nothing you can do. They should warn people about that.

Was it the quality of Facebook that attracted people to it, or just the times in which we live? Not nearly as many people had a Myspace.

For years I've listened to colleagues complaining about old acquaintances badgering them to reconnect via FB. I log on here to discuss theatre, politics, pop culture, and the occasional Madonna bs with the regular posters. I'm very selective about whom I chose to chat with online. I also like the relative anonymity that the site provides. My employer maintains a page on FB so I'm going to have to mind my pees and ques over there on that shaite.

Yeah. The way they act, you'd think the site was designed and set up to encourage you to keep in contact with friends and people you know and not for its intended purpose, to comment on a random article.

Again, javero. I am sincerely deeply sorry that a few minutes on Facebook has been so deeply traumatic for you and is obviously reopening old wounds for you. I just wish there were some way, some way at all, for you to cease your involvement with Facebook. But how?

And yet you chose to join anyway expecting a different outcome. SHAME ON YOU FACEBOOK. SHAME ON YOU.

There are several websites that require online subscribers to log on via FaceBook in order to comment on articles and other content. A colleague begged me to comment on her article posted at HuffPost knowing my aversion to un-social media in general. I did because she's hot and I'm trying to jump her bones. But, my life is otherwise undone due to FB's hegemony in the social media space. It feels like a cult more so than a means for folks to stay connected. I'm not part of the sheeple movement.

No, you're a libertarian creeper, which is superior to all those sheeple.

So **** is the downfall of yet another upstanding red-blooded man. Women. They're the WORST, right javero?

So you let your dick overrule your brain and that's Facebook's fault. I say again SHAME ON YOU FACEBOOK. SHAME ON YOU. And shame on those people from your past thinking enough of you to want to reconnect. And shame on this woman knowing your aversion to FB but asking you to do it anyway. And shame on Huff Post for requiring comments can only be made using Facebook. A pox on all their houses.

I am, like the games, like manicuring my friend list, I'm way more likely to unfriend family and friends when they're outta line, sometimes we make up, usually. I've unfriended my wife several times because she contributes nothing. People say don't talk politics or religion, but really, aren't those two great things to talk about, sports is mundane. I only have 30 friends so I'm not bombarded with nonsense, if I become FB friends and they do that stuff, 5+ posts a day, they're gone.

I had 2 early shots of tequila...all good now. I hadn't felt so overwhelmed since defending Dubya Bush once at blackplanet.com.

I'm touched by the empathy on display in this thread, especially from FishermanBob. Thanks, BROI'm NOT a Fan of Facebook

I'm NOT a Fan of Facebook

I love fb. I want people to contact me. I'm not fond of talking on the phone, so I can see what my friends are up to, and they me. When I want a lot of people to hear my news or see my artwork, I just have to post and they all see it. I love to see pics of my friends and relatives, etc. Such a quick and easy way to keep in touch.

And I"m really happy that I reconnected with old friends, and now I see them all the time. No one's forcing anyone to read info or see pics of others, all you have to do is unfriend or block them.

In response to dare to identify one thing the dullard did right I suggested the President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Some of the posters were aware that I'm a Libertarian so a whole gang of them somehow conflated that fact with my response as a ringing endorsement for his administration. The onslaught was brutal until I got completely ignorant with them and shut down the thread. I logged out and deleted my account shortly afterwards.

@Jane2

I'm happy that FB works for you. I either host WebEx videoconferences or skype family, friends, and colleagues to keep in touch. More a fan of WebEx than skype though because as the host I can completely regulate the exchange.
