I'm NOT a Fan of Facebook

"Do you know Xavier Sinclair?"

"Do you know Martin Schneitzelbaum and Roberta Sanchez?"

"Do you know Karen Mullooley, Jenny Applegreen and 8 others?"

^ These constant messages are annoying, especially when I think about other people getting them about me. I'm sure there's somewhere in my settings I can turn them off, but that would involve two, or maybe even three, clicks...and like javero, that is just too much to ask of me. 'Tis a curse. How do they come up with these people?

Also, when you cyber-stalk someone, do you begin to show up on these things? I'm asking for a friend, needless to say.

I am glad that after 10 years, we finally have a definitive opinion on Facebook.

And it lets you know who the real idiots are. I have some friends who I thought were pretty smart, and then I see what they post and my mind caves in. One of my oldest friends turns out to be a very right winged Republican. I had no idea. He must have been making out with pictures of Reagan while he was in drag....

Its being used used more for self promotion at this point.

And the list of people I should know are either celebrities or someone I have one friend in common with. WTF?

You find out quick enough where other people come from. I still have among my 30 friends some strong gun huggers, learning acceptance.

The worst thing about facebook is all that terrible click bait crap. "This person did blah blah...you'll never guess what happens next"....Ugh.

@Jay Lerner-Z

I work in cybersecurity which explains my reticence to connect with every social media platform on the planet like some folks that I know. Identity theft is no joke.

My suggestion to your "friend" is to avoid logging on to any social media network or cloud service provider's network prior to conducting the search. The trick is to get completely off the grid. It's best to use a non-Windows or non-Apple, or non-Google, or non-smartphone device on a network with open wifi from outside your home or place of employment. Usually, you can glean plenty of valuable intel from an anonymous query.

It's that's not satisfactory, there are at least 3 deep web sites that claim to shield your IP address from certain onlookers but there are no guarantees and it's simply not worth the risk.

Happy sleuthing...

Thanks, but I won't be doing anything so creepy that I need to go to extreme lengths. I was just wondering if, when I check out the hot guy who barely knows my name on facebook, and lust after all his beach pics, does he get any clues like "Do you know Jay Lerner-Z?" in his inbox or stuff like that.

Not that I ever do that, of course.

To answer your question at long last, it depends on the network or service.

On LinkedIn, if any logged-on user (or authenticated user as it's known in the industry) views my profile I'll either get a notification or can view a page that let's me see who has viewed my profile.

I personally limit my social media interactions to LinkedIn, this site, WebEx/Skype (for family & direct reports), WaPo, and now Facebook/HuffPost. I do pay 95 % of the bills online now a practice which took me some time to fully embrace.

Javero, please. I beg of you to stop mentioning Linked In as if anything about that is relevant or generalizable to anything else.

Jay, for your purposes, use Duck Duck Go for your search and install ghostery on your computer. It eliminates trackers and Duck Duck Go is completely untraceable searching.

ok @Namo...I won't split hairs over it. But, I will suggest that there are no technical barriers to the US gov't banning Duck Duck Go akin to China. Law is another matter. Night everyone!

You do know that you don't have to make these awful people your fb friends, right? You can also make sure your profile and account are private. And, then, if you "only" signed up for it to bang a broad, you never need to open the site again.

Problem solved.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Thanks for weighing in @dramamama611. My overriding concern is identity theft as I don't know the identities or backgrounds of FB system administrators in their data centers nor those of the 3rd parties that FB shares info with. I'll most likely make my profile and account private later today to deal with John and Jane Q Public.

Holy cow. Girl. Why would you GIVE them any part of your identity they could steal. Did you actually fill in your address and phone number and everything else that's none of their business?

I think it feels like however you choose to use it, for whatever purpose, and to whatever extent. But maybe that's just what the Sheeple Cult have taught me to say.

@Namo,

I'm a guy and there's at least 3,000 pieces of information in the interwebs about each of us already available to online info brokers and the criminal element. I'm not here to promote paranoia but FB and countless other social media platforms as well as online vendors frequently use 3rd party fulfillment services whose operations are outside their purview.

And while I'm not going to go into specifics, I've performed forensics on a number of systems (including routers) for my clients that have led to employee dismissals and loss of security clearances for violations of company (or agency) computer use policies in sensitive settings. You should re-read some of the privacy and computer use policies of the your favorite online spots, especially if your employer offers BYOD and/or wifi as a courtesy.

The main reason why I don't want to ever see a Republican in the White House again is so that a version of the Patriot Act on steroids never materializes and innocent people aren't sent an invitation to appear before the FISA court due to some shaite that their minor kid inadvertently does online. Hard disks, back up tapes, consumer router logs, ISP server logs, cloud provider records, and other digital assets are subpoenaed by federal judges far more often than you'd suspect.

Carry on...have at it.
