is Mind of Mencia considered to be a variety show?
btw I remember when Comedy Central had the show "Viva Variety," which made fun of the, what is considered now to be, cheesy format. It had those folks from The State, Stella, and Reno 911 on it. :)

There is currently a variety show which can be a hoot- Sabado GIgante on sat. nights. I'll watch it occasionally even though I don't understand it (it's in spanish). If you want to see some funny costumes and ridiculous skits, tune in!

It's a shame that there is no longer enough of a market for these shows to make them profitable for tv producers. I too miss those old variety shows of the 50's, 60's and 70's. Your Show Of Shows, The Texaco Star Theater (you youngsters here would be too young to remember these)right on up to Sonny and Cher and Carol Burnett.
I'm not too young to remember the Texaco Star Theatre. I used to laugh so hard at Uncle Miltie that I'd throw up. I'd LOVE to be able to laugh like that again!
Well, that would be ONE way for me to lose weight.
Dolly Parton's variety show was so good I never understood why it was cancelled so early on. I cried when she and Christine Ebersole sang "Sitting On The Front Porch Swing".
This time of the year I really start missing the old Christmas variety specials. Every year I could look forward to Bing Crosby (and his terribly untalented second family), Andy Williams (and his terribly TALENTED brothers), Perry Como, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and later John Denver, the Carpenters, and Sonny & Cher. Bits and pieces of some of these are available on DVD but no matter how much alike they all seemed, I still looked forward to the new ones every year.

Even though she's extremely talented, Dolly doesn't have the big personality needed to carry a full show. In the first or second show, the producers thought they were going to make her "Carol Burnett" like. So Dolly had them "bump up the lights and see if y'all want to ask any questions". A young woman stands up and says "Have you ever had any plastic surgery?" Carol Burnett, always quick on her feet, would have been able to field that question and have the audience laughing harder than anything they saw in the show. Dolly's embarrassed response was "I'd rather not comment on that."
aww i love Dolly! she always knows how to make you cry. that's her strength
Hell, I would be happy if they brought back...
...SOLID GOLD!
Saw the picture of Flip Wilson as Geraldine. I still have my vinyl copy of the album released of 4 Grealdine skits from the tv show called "Don't Fight the Feeling". It even has that song on it. I love the line "It's bigger than the both of us!"
