Idris Elba isn't going to be the next Bond...

I'm still trying to figure out what the fuck Dave19 meant when he wrote that Chiwetel Ejiofor's looks were too "negative".

Where does he come up with crap like that?

You know how "the dark side" is negative?

THAT.

Could somebody ask Roxy for me: "Take my best shot at what?"

Dave19's relentless racism? Why is Roxy thinking that is a shot at him??? It is a bafflement.

Elba will be a fantastic Roland, and I would love him or another POC (or woman, or both) as the Thirteenth Doctor on Doctor Who. But I'm not sure how I feel about a black James Bond.

Bond stands for the last real bastion of the power of the British Empire. He is the ur-White Savior, the epitome of the white male power fantasy. He drinks, he fights, he spends. He is awesome, but decidedly a problematic figure. For all his charisma, he is emotionally stunted, misogynistic, occasionally racist and casually brutal. A good Bond film should function both as a celebration and a criticism of these figures.

I said the same thing in a discussion of whether or not Galinda in Wicked can be a POC; with a character like this, who represents and serves as part of the hegemony, you may lose something by color blinding a role with such cultural and political baggage. Then again, this depends on the idea that future filmmakers will continue focusing on writing smart, mature Bond films instead of just guilty pleasure movies. If not, if Bond is gonna just keep frigging and fighting, Elba is welcome to the part, but he deserves more than that.

Most of those who played Bond except Connery & Craig were not great actors. If Elba got it, he might become the greatest actor to play the role. I would also hope that some of the non Fleming Bond novels would get filmed .

Any reason not to have a female Bond? Emily Blunt has proved that she can kick ass.

It would kill the franchise. You could have a series separate from the Bond series with a different name. It serves the same purpose. Eventually the Bond franchise may die out as it is a genre over 50 years old. It may be time for the old age home for him. After that, start a new one with a woman at the helm if you want

I remember a Jane Bond x-rated film in the '80s. It was pretty good. Back then those films had budgets and scripts.

"It would kill the franchise."

After recently watching the snoozefest known as SPECTRE, it's safe to order a postmortem. Craig basically phoned it in. I don't recall a less memorable Bond movie ever. After the opening sequence, it went downhill fast. I honestly don't even recall what it was about. Oh...nearly forget; there was a spicy hot scene between Craig and Monica Bellucci. That was the movie's one redeeming quality. Bring on the next installment of Bourne or even gasp...Mission Impossible with the Scientologist.

Timothy Dalton's neutered AIDS-era Bond was a pretty lachrymose affair, which was a shame because I found him all kinds of dreamy.

Thank the Lord I only paid A.60cents for a pirated Bali copy of Spectre and I loves me a Bond escape for a couple of hours but THIS ! Even the opening wasn't exciting . I want a totally NEW, unknown Bond, someone who is NOT mainstream or even 'slightly' known-do some legwork and discover a new talent. As a brand, Bond sells itself then let the PR machine go crazy promoting this new face[and body] of James Bond.

Loved the theme though and pleased it won the Oscar.

Got my boot but have yet to watch it. I got it only to still have a collection of all the Bond movies. Will eventually watch it. The only one who did not tire of the role was George Lazenby who was one and done. Truth be told, he was quite good in the role and the movie was one of the better ones and one that actually did not go in the totally opposite direction of the book. You Only Live Twice was totally different from the book which was really dark in tone and plot.

You'll be able to get a cheap legal copy soon enough anyway. Also, the term "reverse racism" is objectionable, just fyi.

Carlos are you and Namo related? Reverse racism is perfectly apropos here with statements like he will not go to white only shows. Carlos, the biggest racists are the ones who always scream racist the first and loudest. Have a nice day

To Jay making anti cop statements is racist as well.

There is no such thing as reverse racism.

Like when I say, "That is one hell of a stupid straight man," it can be a lot of things. But the one thing it is not is reverse homophobia.

Glad to help make that clearer for you.

MrRoxy, you assuming that me talking about cops shooting unarmed black citizens is racist also means you're assuming I'm saying all the cops who shoot unarmed black citizens are white. Which is a HUGE assumption informed by your racial bias, which is WHITE.

I liked Spectre, thought a decent solid bond.

Really hated Andrew Scott's role. What a waste of talent. OK I am biased and he is right up there as my favourite actor, but I wanted more.

While I think that Daniel Craig was one of the better Bonds, he was less than ideal in that role for a number of reasons. I too like the idea of casting an unknown in the next installment but if it must be a name then to me Henry Cavill fits the bill. While watching the MAN FROM UNCLE, I kept thinking aloud, now there's our next bond. Cavill cuts an imposing figure on screen unlike Craig and he'd be a huge draw with younger women since he likes 'em like that. Cavill is in his prime to take on the role within the next 5 yrs. Craig has not aged well between his three turns at the helm and his heart is clearly no longer in it.

Back in 2006, Henry Cavill was actually down to the last two, alongside Daniel Craig. He came this close to getting the part!

Cavill would indeed make a great bond. Was not thrilled with Uncle as it really strayed far from the source material. It is a given Craig is out and if he did another he would sleepwalk thru it like Connery did starting with Thunderball.

Problem with any actor is they are so physical and draining that it is almost 2 years out of your life between filming, resting up and doing publicity. This is why many tire of the role after awhile
