In America

if you have not had a chance yet, go see this funny and touching film. great performances all around in this affecting story of an irish family illegally immigrating to the united states.

(just as an aside, does anyone know when this story is supposed to take place? i assume it is in the early 80's since the family goes to see ET and there is ET merchandise at a street fair - so, ruling out the reissues of ET - but when the family is in times square mamma mia and aida are among the broadway shows playing...) minor point, but i was just curious.

re: In America

This was one of my favorite movies of the year (along with The Station Agent). It's based on Jim Sheridan's own story of coming to America in 1982. It's supposed to be set then, but there are many discrepancies, like the very modern video camera one of the girls is using.

I'm with you Menken fan. Up until I saw In America, The Station Agent was my favorite this year. Now I rate them together. Lost in Translation was another I really enjoyed, not so much for the story but the atmosphere. It had me totally entranced.

re: re: re: In America

i don't think the director realized that people can date pictures of time square by the bilboards. supprisingly, this is a little known fact. and robbo, i love your new pic! i deffinitely need to see this movie now. thanks for turning me onto it

re: re: re: re: In America

Sheridan said that while setting the film in the 80s, he didn't want to make it specifically the 80s--all of the anachronisms are intentional. In years from now, people won't even realize this as the decades close in on each other in our memories. =)

I LOVE this film!

Yep, the messages this film puts across are timeless! It doesn't matter what year it seems to be~

Innocent choir boy- "little known fact?" and you don't think the director realized......are you serious?

loved this movie . I ususally stay in the Hell's KItchen area so a lot of things seemed familiar. sections of 9th ave & such...
As for the anacronysms... I found myself thinking of Proust. This is the retelling of a memory and as such things do blur or get mixed up but that doesn't depreciate the memory.

well, i'm sorry, i happen to live in leesburg virginia, which is famous for horse training and equestrian science. the people i know, even actors, think its a miracle that i can date a pic of time square. they also think starbucks is the name of the cow that the FFA is raising for the 4H fair. now that i think about it, you're right, im' sure the director did think about it, and it makes a lot more sense after jrb_actor's comment.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: In America

I found the time frame in the movie to be too confusing. New York in the early '80s was a very different place than it is today. I just found the movie to be unbelieveable.

re: In America

While I did notice the time setting problems, I ignored them and thoroughly loved this movie. The setting in the 80's has nothing to do with the story.

re: re: In America

Actually, I just forgot the 80s thing--to me the film could have been 90s or 2003. It doesn't matter. It wasn't a museum piece.

re: re: In America

i'm bumping this terribly old thread because this movie is on tv right now on HBO3.

i've seen it before, but i still think that it is one of the most amazing movies i have ever seen. it's perfect and brilliant. and the acting is amazing. those two bolger sisters are too cute.

so, i recommend this movie to anyone. it's sad yet uplifting and inpirational and has so many great messages. rent it if you get a chance!

it's so great.

I love this movie! Cry everytime I see it. The two girls are amazing. I don't know how they did it, cause the little one must have been like 4 at the time. Go see it if you haven't!!

LOVE that film Robbo --- of course I love just about any "filim" about the "struggles of the poor immigrant Irish"...sorry I was channeling my grandfather there!

And I also caught that little error when the family drove through time square...

re: re: In America

Awwwwww. My favorite part is when they're on the stairs and the girls are having the conversation:

Ariel: Cool!
Kristy: Where'd ya hear that, "cool"?
Ariel: I just heard it.
Kristy: You're American already. It's disgusting!

All this said in irish accents. Priceles!!!!

re: re: In America

I really liked this movie. Some over the top moments, but very well-written. Great performances, especially by the always reliable Samantha Morton. Her eyes are incredibly expressive.

re: re: In America

I love Samantha Morton! Give the girl an oscar already... three nominations now i beleive. Such an amazing film. My fave bit is the end when the eldest daughter tells her dad to say bye. Very moving peice of cinema is that!
