As a waiter living in Denison, my paycheck was a measily $2.15 an hour. WTF am I supposed to do with a whole $2.15 cents? Tipping servers is expected, but only if they do their job to my standards.
The only person I tip that isn't a server is my haircutter girl. I don't really get packages that often, so it's no big deal.
(Edit, I'd totally screw the delivery man...but only if he was tall, dark and handsome.)

I repeat: Good-looking delivery men should be tipped generously. Ugly delivery men should be left to suffer.

Elphaba, I'm not trying to offend you, but your attack on Liam is unwarranted. He has a great point and I'm not sure you understand that wait people make LESS THAN MINIMUN WAGE and RELY on tips to make up the difference.
And I can also tell you that UPS drivers make pretty good money. They at least make a hell of a lot more than waiters, since waiters make 2.15 an hour.
There's your difference.
NY, anyone working for $2.15 an hour has other issues they need to deal with...no one forces anyone to do any job. And I am not going to feel sorry for someone for a wage they make at a job they've chosen.
And I have known NO waiter or waitress (among my friends) who has ever worked for $2.15 an hour...at least not in Palm Springs, San Diego, San Francisco, or any other town I've lived in.
Liam has no point, if he did, he could defend it.......and I've lived with a UPS driver, and I know what she went through day after day.......and she earned every penny she made.
None of this, however is the point. The point is people get tips for good service, whether they be waiters, drivers, or gardeners.
Liam made a ridiculous statement, I called him on it, and he had no reason.
(and NY I was not offended. We all are entitled to our own opinions about things here)
Wait, am I missing something?
I thought that minimun wage was just that, the minimum you can be paid. How is it legal to pay someone less than minimum?
I think with certain professions they can legally say tips make up the difference?
Okay, if that is the case, that sucks.
Why would anyone want a job where they couldn't even pay you minimum to cover you showing up to work. I understand some resturaunts are great in the tip area, but, geeze...
I actually waited tables for a short time (having double jointed wrists wasn't helpful with large trays of food) and I at least got minimum.

Okay. Denison is in TX. TX has messed up laws. The laws in California, so I've heard, say that someoen can't legally make below minimum wage. In TX, it's different. The law says that car hops and waiters can make less than that because they should be tipped and that makes up for the difference.
" I repeat: Good-looking delivery men should be tipped generously. Ugly delivery men should be left to suffer."
I fully agree with Dollypop on this one LOL
actually it was more of "UPS people are just doing their jobs"....and the inference is that waiters are not, hence they should be tipped and UPS people should not.........which IS a ridiculous idea......as EVERYONE is just doing their jobs.......although many do NOT deserve to be tipped
however I am over this argument. I bow out
Here's a little lesson from a guy who waited tables in NYC.
I made $2.40 an hour. I was expected to make at least minimum wage in tips per hour. Normally, not a problem, but you'd be surprised at the number of people who do not believe that anything more than a buck for a $150 meal is necessary.
Here's the REAL kicker. Most businesses report your tips as 15% of your daily sales...so, guess what that means?
If I made $1 off that $150 meal, the IRS thinks I made somewhere in the neighborhood of $22. And that's what they expect me to pay taxes on.
I have friends who have struggled on by with bare minimum tips and then discovered they owe the government thousands of dollars.
Tipping is a bad, bad thing. It can be extremely good, but the day our government decided that tipping could take the place of an actual wage for service staff is the day it got out of hand.
That's HORRENDOUS, Singer.
Which is why I will be a homeless beggar on the streets before I EVER step foot into anything less than a 4-star restaurant in this city again.
You have no idea how demeaning it is to have a graduate degree and run up and down stairs to get things for a fat fatty from Texas, who runs up a $200 bill then gives you $5.
Sometimes, in spite of what a LOT of people say (some of whom say so on this board), you cannot possibly work hard enough or do a good enough job to get even 15% out of a person.
OH, and I forgot to mention this. The restaurant in which I worked also required that you tip out your bartender, busboy and food runner. Based on food sales.
So, one day, I made about $1000 in food sales. That means I should have had at least $150 in my pocket. I did that without selling one drink from the bar. I was still expected to tip my bartender $15. On days like that, you were very lucky to walk with 10% tips and just brace yourself for the IRS expecting you to have made $150.
It's a seriously f-ed up system.

Anyone who has ever worked in a "Service" job knows- you have to tip and tip well! Waiters work hard and indeed, often get totally screwed by customers who leave little or no tip. I've seen a waiter run ragged by a couple of moms and their several small children get tipped a lavish 3%. Do they not realize or do they not care?
And if my UPS or another delivery person performs an extra service, I certainly tip. And you dirty minded people, an extra service might mean bringing up a really heavy box. When my computer was delivered my UPS man made certain to bring all those boxes inside and even asked where I was going to set it up and took them down to the office. Believe me, I slipped him a tip for that!
