It's just an act.

It comes on tonight at 11:30 pm eastern time.
If it is an act, what's he trying to accomplish? He's coming off as a jerk and an idiot. Why would someone intentionally do that?I hear this switch from acting to hip hop is all an act and that Casey Afleck is directing a documentary about his new music career. If its all a hoax it sounds like he is ripping off Borat. He insists he is serious about his music but it is hard to take him serious. Could he want attention that bad?

"Joaquin, sorry you couldn't be here tonight."
"We owe an apology to Farrah Fawcett."
Both of those comments from Dave cracked me up!

The only explanation I have for when people pull stunts like this is that they need to do something for publicity. It seems they'll do anything. I hope I'm wrong because prior to this I had great admiration for Joaquin.

I agree, unless he was high. I would hate to be his publicist or agent. This sort of crap gets old fast. I felt bad for Dave. Obviously, he was not in on the joke and he looked frustrated. I would have kicked him off during commercial break.I am sure this will be the most watched clip of the day come tomorrow and everyone will be talking about it, which I guess is what Joanquin wants.

Ok, it's the commercial now. I think maybe he's doing this to show how good of an actor he is. He certainly has a lot of people guessing.

I worked with Joaquin the weekend he announced his "retirement" from acting. He has got to be chemically altered... it's not an act.

He was born with a cleft lip and was raised in a cult called The Children of God (now known as The Family International and which practiced incestuous sex between parents and their kids according to some ex-members) and he watched his brother die of a drug overdose on a sidewalk. Who wouldn't be a regular normal dude with all that going on in the background?
But as for his Letterman schtick, it was obviously just schtick. He couldn't even maintain it and laughed at something Dave said.

I see it as no different from all the rest of the 'entertainment' we're presented with.
Intentional or not doesn't matter - this is what passes for entertainment these days.
When's the next installment of American Idol?

The first segment with him just finished. This is an act. And I must say, I find it to be quite funny and good. I am not a fan of Phoenix's, but this is good....so far!

"He was born with a cleft lip"
Is that why he has a scar on his lip?
That man has lost his damn mind. But he's still amazing.

His brother lost his virginity, according to an interview he gave, at age FOUR in The Children of God cult.
And yes, the cleft lip = the scar.
And no, I hardly think the Letterman Show is a prime example of all that is wrong with what is presented as entertainment these days.

I actually was re-entering this thread to replace my post with 'nevermind', but I see it already got read.
Whatever.
You're right, Namo, and I capitulate. Not that it matters.
For the record, I actually don't care what he does.

I know several people whose childhoods were lot more screwed up than his and they aren't batsh*t crazy.
It's just possible that he's genuinely off his rocker.

"Never mind is two words."
I didn't know that - but I didn't know about 'a lot' until I read about it on this board long ago.

I thought this was part of a Borat kind of film he's making with Casey Affleck. Hasn't he made some other weird appearances with cameras following him?

"He was born with a cleft lip"
Is that why he has a scar on his lip?
Actually, it is a "cleft palate" he was born with. It's not uncommon, and with most people who have had it, the scar is obvious. I have to say that I actually think his scar is kind of sexy, and I don't think it's kept him from constantly working.
I think he's hot.

Nevermind is one word in Nirvenglish!
Though I prefer Phairesian, in which "white chocolate space egg" is one word.
