An unusual 'coming out' declaration to be sure. It seemed an emotional moment for her--although she IS an award-winning actress--yet finely calibrated to be both a declaration of identity and a not-subtle "Fvck you" to anyone who has ever questioned her unwililngness to stand up and step forward.

It is her life to live as she wishes, and she certainly owes me nothing. But if she is looking for kudos for 'bravely' making her quasi-declaration? Nope. I'll save my Kudos for people who were willing to risk the possibility of damaging their careers in order to try and do some good.

Addison, Ellen is a case in point. Her coming out totally bottomed out her career. When she hosted SNL after her break up with Anne Heche, there were empty seats in 8H!
Took her a long time for her to regain her fan base and (for a very bright spot) the country's opinions to change.

Foster acknowledged her partner at an awards show years ago and they adopted the kids together. I don't understand why so many think she wasn't already out, though that's part of her point - someone famous isn't allowed (by some) to be "out" without standing up and announcing it to millions in a high profile way.

You know what? I don't care if she's out or a quiet lesbian or in the closet or what. Until she gets up and I watch her spew incomprehensible paragraphs of weirdness. Then i seriously say "WTF?" I'd have not given Ms Foster a second thought if she'd gotten up, talked about her work, thanked her directors, co-stars, managers, mom, partner and kids.

But to talk about her big coming out moment, talk about her publicist being worried about what she's going to say, announce she is single then give that bizarre "I've always been out" rap- it makes no sense at all and it does make me think so much less of her.

Wasn't her award for her body of work in acting, directing and whatever else? Did she discuss that at all? I don't remember. I'm not crazy about her after last night. She had an attitude when she was "coming out" that was insincere and why did she choose sMell of all people to praise?

I didn't really mind the Joycean stream-of-consciousness by way of Charles Ludlam. It was bizarre, but in a hypnotic way. The only thing I took issue with was what seemed to be digs at other celebrities for outing themselves publicly...although, I feel like she was trying to belittle the culture that insisted on such an action rather than the people who took the action. But who can say? I could barely follow it!

And her friendship with Gibson is just...I just don't get it. I mean...I get seeing past bad behavior to get to the person who was probably really damaged by his father's F*CKed-up-edness. But at some point you just have to say, 'Bitch...you old. Stop being controlled by your dad's SH*T.'

She said: "My family and friends here tonight and at home, and of course, Mel Gibson. You know you save me too."

You can be open about your sexuality and still maintain your privacy. Being out doesn't equate you to honey boo boo.

I dunno. I was happy she finally acknowledged it to middle America.

She is a unique woman, and has not made some of the choices I would make, but for some reason, Mel Gibson has been a loyal and sincere friend to her. She clearly has her own demons and issues, and for whatever reasons, she found counsel in Mel. Perhaps his one saving grace is that he is loyal to his friends. I personally find him vile, but he clearly has helped her.

It's her life, and her speech. Between John Hinckley, growing up in Hollywood, and being gay, she has had plenty of issues to deal with and manage. I remember when she was going to Yale that she just wanted just to be. I cannot imagine the scrutiny she has lived with, both external and internal. Perhaps not incredibly courageous at this point in her life to others, but I would imagine pretty scary to her.

Not having walked in her shoes I can't really judge her choices. Plus I don't see anything terrible that she's done. We all have to live our life the way we see fit. I've said rambling things like that before...only difference is my life doesn't have me doing them on TV.

This all seems to me like more gays picking at each other for not being gay the right way. And for all we know she's Gibson's AA sponsor. I'm cutting her some slack. She's not wild. She's not acting like Lindsay Lohan. She's not yelling at fans like Madonna. She's a dignified, private, talented professional trying to live her own life.

My office mate- a lovely lovely woman who could be the absolute benchmark of "Middle America" had no idea what Jodie Foster was talking about. Her comment was "I thought she was a lesbian?" Her take away was that Foster was dating Mel Gibson.

I liked her speech. I think a lot of people are personalizing it. The judgmental statements are crazy. Theres no compassion left in this world. She is friends with Mel Gibson-she knows his heart. None of you do. Maybe her compassion softened him.

People calling him a Nazi? Please. He's an alcoholic with rage issues probably related to his history. Like none of you have ever made a misstep in your perfect lives.
