Posted: 3/10/06 at 7:49amI've heard that this movie really isn't that great (One critic said it was "The first movie to make Johnny Depp utterly charmless", but that, of course, that has to be the point?) and slow and turgid, but.....Depp *is* in it. Anyone else seeing it this weekend?

Posted: 3/10/06 at 8:21amI saw it during its one-week (Academy qualification) run in NYC late last year, and it was undoubtedly one of the WORST films I've ever seen. Even the considerable talents of Depp, Morton, Malkovich etc. couldn't save it.

Good to know, mef! Good to know. There wasn't really anything of interest that opened this week and I was wondering if I should check it out. Guess that's a big fat no (especially considering I'd have to pay full price as I can't use my movie passes until it's been out for 10 days).
On an entirely different note...How great is Jules et Jim?!?!?

Posted: 3/10/06 at 9:19amhow could they have gone wrong? johnny depp is the most watchable person in film. it certainly looks cool in the commercials -- but i heard it was bad, and not in camp or fun way. i'll rent it or watch it on STARZ or whatever. i love johnny depp regardless.

Posted: 3/10/06 at 9:25amMEF - What was wrong with it? Everyone keeps saying it's horrible but doesn't really say why. Is it the acting, cinematography, overall plot, tone, etc.?

Posted: 3/10/06 at 11:11amI normally enjoy Mr. Depp quite a lot, but after having just watched the 2 minute prologue on Yahoo Movies, I may pass on this one. If that clip is typical of the dialogue, I don't think I could stand it for the duration of a feature film.

Now everyone that looks at this thread is going to be like, what is that mabel talking about?!?!
But yeah, we watched in my Art of Film class last semester, it was great. Though the DVD skitzed out in the last two minutes, so we didn't get to see the very end. My prof told us what happened, but what a pisser! I haven't been able to find it to rent it, but one of these days, I'll dig it up.

Posted: 3/10/06 at 4:32pmI heard not so good reviews about this movie but it's Johnny Depp. I think I will go see it just because he's in it.

Posted: 3/10/06 at 10:42pmI saw it when it was a work in progress 1 year ago. I'm sure ALOT of cuts were made. ( there is a lot of "rogering" going on and it freq seems to have been shot through a glass darkly.)Depp gets some great monolouges but mostly it points out that astage show needs a lot of work to adapt to screen not to show its "stageyness" Samantha Morton is quite good and Depp really chews scenery ( it's almost a requirement of the script). It is an interesting curiosity piece.

Posted: 3/10/06 at 11:28pmI never thought his movies were that good...Edward Scissor hands? WTF?? He's so strange too, and not in a good way. There's just something about him, and the way people rave about him is tiring. I'm all Depped out.

The director is responsible for the what the **** more than Johnny Depp is, but he's a great actor, who has had a varied career. Too bad you don't enjoy him. His strangeness is typically what most people love about him. But there's a whole roster of nice, clean cut (from the same cloth) actors out there for you.
I agree that I'm sick of people jumping on the Depp wagon. Any other actor and most of these people would hate these movies.

Posted: 3/11/06 at 3:45amEdward Scissorhands was a decent film with the potential to be much much more. I never did think the ending was all that satisfying. Tim Burton really has never been one for the story department, despite the fact that everything else about his films are first rate.

I found "Edward Scissorhands" extremely imaginative and fun, too. I thought Johnny Depp did an excellent job. I like the dog-grooming scene, personally.

Posted: 3/11/06 at 6:31pmI think Johnny Depp is brilliant, but you couldn't pay me to see this movie. I've seen numerous clips, and they all bored the **** out of me.

Just saw this tonight to wash the taste of FAILURE TO LAUNCH from my brain.
Holy f***, this is a brilliant movie. After an absolutely genius opening scene, the next forty minutes are a bit of a bore as director Lawrence Dunmore attempts to find his footing. But once he does, he ends up with a film that's just fascinating and entrancing.
This is easily one of the top 5 Johnny Depp performances. Easily. Especially at the end...

thank you for recognizing a good film when you see it!
Also, Edward Scissorhands was charming as hell. Depp couldn't have been better. the art direction was also brilliant. this is a film you can watch over and over again.
