Ha, yes the accents (and not just Scarlett's) are cartoonish.

It worked for her though. She did some nice work in Don Jon.

I can definitely respect a classic choice like Harley.

Mine is Abe in case you were wondering :)

I'll defend ScarJo at TIFF. She was there for another movie too, Under the Skin, and that was a priority because it just had screenings at Telluride and Venice and she was probably there at TIFF for the classical reasons movies are at film festivals: getting that movie a distributor. She was at least successful at that though I cannot really say how approachable she is in general. But I felt bad how pervy people's questions were about her in the Under the Skin Q&A (she is naked a lot in that but not really in a classic male gaze sort of way).

"It worked for her though. She did some nice work in Don Jon."

I mean she is a city kid although the movie appears to be playing on a specific social class with the affectations.

I saw this last night. It was a fun movie. JGL's skin was worth the ticket price alone. He is HOTHOTHOT in this, and I never got tired of watching him shirtless and jerking off. I thought his family was hilarious, and I loved the Catholic church scenes - especially the confessional visits.

Strummergirl, Did you see Don Jon? I loved reading your reviews from TIFF every night btw.

Whizzer- I didn't. And honestly, the trailer was a bit of a turn-off for me. But I've heard good things since way back when it was Don Jon's Addiction at Sundance and for some odd reason I am a ScarJo fan, but there was something a little too hyper and first-film that I was catching in the trailer. I usually am forgiving of first-time features but in the age of digital/DCP it gets a little more obvious who can actually use a camera. Lake Bell's movie In a World, which I did somewhat like, had a real problem going on from a technical perspective with its camera that I kept on seeing frame to frame. Thanks for the feedback on my TIFF reviews.

I am intrigued about you saying Brie Larson has a good scene. I've been bullish on her since The United States of Tara and even in her bit role in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World she can make an impression (specifically leading me to illegally download her version of "Black Sheep" because the soundtrack only had the version by Metric). She also did her bestest in The Spectacular Now in a thankless part.

strummergirl, I know that Scarlett Johansson had premieres two nights in a row, but I really don't see what that has to do with her behaviour at the Don Jon premiere. If the other movie was more important to her and she didn't care about this one, then she shouldn't have bothered doing the Q&A. But to stand on stage beside the guy who put his heart and soul into his first feature film project while being completely spaced out and showing zero interest was just a waste of everybody's time. In this situation, the questions that were being asked were completely reasonable and not pervy, so it had nothing to do with the questions being asked.

Brie Larson basically had one line in the whole film. It worked because it was completely unexpected, but I'm not sure how much it was dependent on the actress vs. how the scene was written. I'm being intentionally vague not to ruin the surprise factor of that moment (if that makes any sense).

Platypus- It does in terms of priority, especially when she and Jonathan Glazer are the only people who are the selling points in that movie- and very few people beyond cinephile circles know who Jonathan Glazer is. Relativity already got Don Jon in distribution all the way in Sundance (in January, months ago) versus her other movie that at that point did not. I was not judging what questions were asked at the Don Jon Q & A, I was talking about Under the Skin which she easily could've gone all Steve McQueen on people. I didn't see Don Jon nor have seen anything about the Q & A, so I am not judging that specifically. I am judging her overall presence at TIFF, because without her Under the Skin is not getting that high of a profile distributor.

Saw this last night. It was just okay. Really seemed to drag at times. IMO, regarding the Swiffer scene. I believe her character knew what it was, but since, in her mind, cleaning was beneath her, she tried to convince JGL that she didn't know anything about it. In her mind, many things about JGL character was beneath her. That is why, she was constantly trying to improve him. However, there were aspects of her personality, that she couldn't hide, that some would think was "lower class". Like the constant smacking of her chewing gum.

Finally got around to seeing this. I liked it enough, but I was confused by one comment he made while describing why he liked porn better than the real thing. He said in life a real girl won't put up with the "money shot," but in porn you get to see it. Why would a straight guy give a sh!t about seeing the "money shot?" Why would that be a turn on for them? Am I reading too much into it?

Watched it last night and thought it was incredibly entertaining. JGL is a wonderful actor and he has great potential as a writer/director as well. The ending was a little abrupt, but I thought it was a clever and all-around enjoyable movie.

I really hated this. It did feel like a first film and when you add the ambition of the script and the fine line the characterizations must be between nuance and caricature, it felt like a big failure. Only ScarJo as Barbara Sugarman in her scenes were remotely watchable. I'd rather it be about her character. Heck, throw her into American Hustle, she'd be right at home. The accent felt natural and authentic.

It reminded me a bit of another movie where I admired the ambition but as a first-film it had so much sloppiness in craft and script structure issues save for some embers in performance mixed with caricature, Lake Bell's In a World. If this were in the hands of a more experienced filmmaker and there was a better foundation to mold from the script, I could see it being much better than it was.

I really enjoyed this... It was actually a pretty interesting look into some parts of culture we don't really talk about, especially porn and porn addiction. Is it a masterpiece? No... but I enjoyed it, and it certainly wasn't fluff. I think it was a great debut for JGL. I for one am looking forward to what he can come up with next!

Witty, touching film hoisted by the always superb Julianne Moore, the tangy Tony Danza, and the increasingly poised ScarJo.
