The state government already filed for an appeal and is allegedly working on an emergency stay to get marriage licenses to be stopped getting issued.

I am so happy for everyone who got married last night here in Salt Lake City. Many groups are trying to appeal the decision. They are trying to open the court house today so many more couples can get married.....Blessings to all.

This is such an important step, a federal judge declaring part of a state's constitution to be unconstitutional from a federal perspective. This case, or one like it, will inevitably make its way to the SCOTUS. Boies and Olson are working on a similar case in Virginia.

The 10th Circuit quickly denied the emergency stay to stop the implementation of same sex marriage in Utah. The judges basically said the people who filed for the stay didn't fulfill any of the requirements to get an emergency stay with their argument. Utah couples can get their marriage licenses tomorrow barring any stunts from local offices to shut down over security measures and the like.

Let the screaming and kicking begin! Oh, and to those Mormons who are against marriage equality. I love this quote from Seth Anderson:
"How delightfully ironic that today, December 23, Mormons will remember the birthday of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon Church, a man who had 34 wives, 1/3 of whom married Joseph while simultaneously married to other men and 1/3 of whom were under the age of 20. The founder of Salt Lake City and colonizer of Utah, Brigham Young, had 55 wives and 34 children. 21 of his wives had never been married, 16 were widows, 6 were divorced, and 6 had living husbands."
And they have the nerve to preach about morals and marriage being between one man and one woman.

Not that I'm in the business of defending Mormons (I do not personally know any practicing Mormons), but I just want to point out that you're painting Mormonisim with broad strokes. Within the Mormon practice there are several different 'factions,' including a much more mainstream, new-wave faction of Mormons who do not believe in polygamy. But they are certainly still conservative in their fundamental beliefs.

I'm aware of that. I'm talking about the Mormons who were responsible for Prop 8 back in 2008 who at the same time confused why gay's were so hostile towards them. Yes, there are 'some' Mormons who are for marriage equality,but I think a majority are still very much against Utah allowing gay marriage.

I just saw this today. The people who disagree with the judge's decision are not going down without a fight, but it's fight they've basically already lost.
