Let's just enjoy this season as it unfolds.
It has certainly grown on me and is now "must watch" TV in our house.
I agree with HorseTears and Eric that the principals, while attractive, are a refreshing change from the pretty clones that populate American TV (and that includes Groff himself).

I've seen the 4 currently available episodes, and wish I could say I'm particularly impressed with it. I want so very much to like it, the cast and production are all first rate. There's just something missing, and I can't for the life of me put a finger on it. I'm just not finding it particularly interesting.
I am enjoying it as well, but I was it was a little campier. Maybe campy isn't right word, but snapper in the dialogue.

I basically like that they're not going the sitcom "every line's a laugh line" kind of thing, which can get so old so fast. I'll keep watching, I guess.

Dear lord, this isn't considered a comedy, is it? I kind of forgot about it after the third episode, and I don't feel any great need to catch up.
Who said it was meant to be a comedy? I hate the word dramedy, but I think it's meant to be a drama more or less, a lighter drama anyway with awkward comedy but you're not meant to be sitting there laughing out loud.

I think there's still that binary assumption that 30 min = comedy and 1 Hour = drama.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind if the show was 1 hour. It's always over too soon. Usually leaves me wanting more, but I guess that's a good thing too.
It's a matter of taste of course, but I agree Cats, I wouldn't mind it being longer.
Phyllis, I think you're right. If it ever got nominated for an Emmy (and I'm not expecting it to) I have no idea where they'd place it.
That said, because it's on HBO most episodes so far have run 29-30 minutes. On network tv most 30 minute shows are now 21 mins, 30 seconds without commercials, and hour shows are 43 mins. So the difference isn't quite as big as it seems. (It's depressing when I watch DVDs of old shows, even up to the late 80s an hour show ran about 49 minutes, a 30 minute show about 25...
While everyone stopped looking at "Looking," it became really good television. Episode 4 put firmly out of the QAF-wannabe territory and put it onto the how-long-do-I-have-to-wait-for-the-next-episode list.
And I love Russell Tovey's ear handles!
Oh--and because Scott Bakula.
Glad to hear that ratings were up for ep 4, hope they can maintain!
Eric, it seems doubtful that LOOKING would even get nominated for anything, not simply because it's a "gay" show but probably because it's a rather subtle, quiet show that hasn't generated a great deal of buzz past its debut. But if it were to be nominated for anything, I think Phyllis is right about the binary assumption and it would be slotted into comedy categories. Before the show debuted, I thought that the ad campaign's tagline of "Find something real" was a bit generic, and perhaps it is, but it fits the show well.
BTW, just wanted to add that I'm really enjoying Lauren Weedman's ("Doris") work on this show. I think she's doing really funny, interesting work in a fairly minor part. I hope we see a bit more of her if the show makes it past season 1.
So I caught up on all the episodes yesterday and definitely enjoyed 3 and 4 the most.
The revelation that I had came at the end of the fourth episode when Raúl Castillo showed back up and then I immediately started hating the show again. Something about him just makes me want to punch him in the face. Possibly it's lingering memories from the dreadful movie Cold Weather that he was in. I'm sorry to see that they're going to still continue to shoehorn that relationship into the show. This should be about Patty dating whomever in the beginning and not having a bf in episode 2.
This is by no means appointment viewing for me but it's certainly not as unbearable as the pilot lead us to believe.
Horse, just to be clear I have 100% faith Looking will not be up for any major awards (Emmys, Globes) except for probably some minor gay media ones... You're right--not only is it too low-key, but it simply doesn't have the mainstream media buzz that, say, Girls instantly got. If this were 1999, that would be a different story, but I kinda appreciate that about the show (if that makes sense.) I do think you're right that they would probably arbitrarily slot it in the comedy category. (I went on my own tangent about the lengths of shows, which really didn't have much to do with anything lol. I've had a stressful day with essays. I think my point was that while I want it to be longer, too, really we still get 1/3 more meat, so to speak, than we would with a "30 minute" show on network tv, and only 11 minutes or so less than we would with an hour show.)
It's nice to see that those who were put to sleep or detested the pilot are at least starting to find it a pleasant way to spend 30 mins, Clyde.
Same page, Eric, same page. All that said, while it probably would not be nominated for anything beyond GLADD Awards (don't get me started on that org), I wouldn't be entirely shocked if it ended up with 1 or 2 minor Golden Globe noms. For all its ridiculousness, the Hollywood Foreign Press is never afraid to be ahead of the curve, championing tv shows others have yet to catch up with.
Clyde, sounds like you might have some more hate-watching in your future as I don't think we're going to see Raul Castillo's character leave anytime soon. I quite like him, but I get what you're saying. There are just some actors that seem to offend one's sensibilities no matter how good the project they're in is. (That would be Jack Black and Mrs. Chris "Goop" Martin for me)
To make matters worse, I have a love for Russell Tovey that extends way back to when Captain Jack set his sights on him.
Ahh! I forgot he was on Torchwood--I guess that's where I first saw him (or was the Little Dorritt miniseries earlier...)
Oh I didn't realize Russel Tovey was in Little Dorritt. Perhaps I should give it a watch one of these days. It just so...earnest and twee from all the previews I saw. But, great cast, obviously.
Total sidebar, but since Barrowman was brought up, if you're a fan (or even if you're not, really), his appearance on BBC "pop quiz comedy" show Never Mind the Buzzcocks is worth seeking out. Barrowman challenges Buzzcocks host and British comedy treasure Simon Amstell to a "gay-off". Hilarity ensues.

I am completely in love with Murray Bartlett (Dom). There. I've said it. God that man is so fvcking HOT!!!
Do you think he will get wise and give up twinks for Scott Bakula?
Because...SCOTT BAKULA!
Bite your tongue! I want more Andrew Keenan-Bolger!
It's odd, I liked Murray on Guiding Light, but would never have recognized him here. Definitely hot, though (and a good non-Australian accent, better than on the soap where he'd slip a lot.)
...no more Andrew Keenan-Bolger please :P
I assume Bakula staring in the new NCSI (yawn) would not interfere in a poetntial second season here.

Because...SCOTT BAKULA!
Yes, I hope so. I'm all for seeing these two getting it on. That would be way beyond hot.
I praise Scott Bakula for staying in such great shape! I should look so good when I reach his age.
Yes to more Scott Bakula please!
