It all starts tonight...and the commercials are saying not to miss the first five minutes!
If you are going to watch LOST, I would think it would be imperative to actually be there the whole time.
Indeed penguin! I am a little nervous about seeing tonight's episode without having watched the recap of the first two seasons, even though I have seen every episode!

good point penguin!
I caught the recap last week...there was a lot I had forgotten. Like Walt and Michael going off in the boat - and "not Henry Gale" capturing Kate, Sawyer and Jack (they let Hurley go...!)

I watched it, and while it was pretty fun to see how they went about it, I really didn't see anything that I "missed". It seemed straightforward, which probably meant it contained a thousand tiny clues to something.
That said, I am expecting surprises galore tonight.
I'm so excited to watch it tonight!
I didn't watch the recap, but today I talked with a friend about the season finale, and I think we were able to remember everything that happened.
The main issues set up directly seem to be:
Are Michael and Walt getting away from the island?
What happened to Locke, Ecko and Desmond in the hatch?
Where are the "others" taking Sawyer, Kate, and Jack?
How will Hurley and the "losties" react, will they try to get them back?
Will the discovery by the "arctic team" lead a new castaway(s) to the island?
Plus a thousand subplots.
I'm so excited about the premiere tonight! I'm hoping for a Desmond-type shocker.
Lost *Boom*
Last season some gay magazine complained there were no gay characters on Lost. Well, they got their wish. Probably not who they would have chosen, though.
Woah this is weird. No one is talking about this really!
This was my first episode that I watched wednesday at 9. I love this show. It brought up so many questions and was just...great.
Now where are singingwendy's comments?
Maybe people are finally getting tired of having their chained yanked week after week by this "make it up as they go along" show. I gave up on it after season 1.
The writers have said a million times that they aren't just making it up as they go along.
I thought that the episode was pretty slow for a premiere, and compared to most of the other episodes, but it did succeed in raising a million new questions.
"The writers have said a million times that they aren't just making it up as they go along."
Oh. Okay then. By the way Mandi Moo... do you know how to spell the word G-U-L-L-I-B-L-E?
The show was fascinating.
There is an overarching story that obviously is not "being made up as you go along" but various details are and should be.
They have answered hundreds of questions, the thing that seems to get some people confused is that every answer leads to something new. You have to be willing and able to pay attention, which is difficult for many.
This time they answered one of the questions on my list, next week they will probably answer one more.
That is how it works.
More importantly, the character of Jack has been given an important amount of added understanding. That is the most intriguing aspect of the show, we are meant to understand these characters. It is that, not the mystery, that makes it compelling for me. (And why my least favorite moments are when important character moments are sacrificed for "action"=Libby)

A bit disappointing for a premiere - seeing that after commercials it was probably only about 20 minutes long. Could there possibly have been any more commercials? In case you weren't reminded every FIVE mimutes, LOST is brought to you by American Express...
The Others' commune was interesting. How did "Not Henry Gale" (who's name appears to really be "Ben") know that there would be survivors? Loved that they were baking muffins and doing "Book Club."
Juliet was good. I liked her calm demeanor, which you could tell was driving Jack absolutely crazy.
Last night resurrects (pun mildly intended) the purgatory theory. With the files on their lives, etc.
A bit little disappointing for a season opener (mostly because of the endless ads), but I am so glad it's back!

For a hint of where they're going with all this I humbly suggest reading Ayn Rand's ATLAS SHRUGGED.
"Now where are singingwendy's comments?"
Gee...I didn't know my opinion was in such high demand!
I thought it was a great opening episode. LOVED the opening....Did anyone else immediately flash back to last season's opening? Getting out the record and putting it on the player...getting out the CD and putting it in the player? At first I thought "Juliet" might be in another hatch...this one a bit more modern than the one Desmond was in.
Anybody catch what book the book club was reading? I noticed it was Stephen King...and they mentioned numbers and science fiction. Somehow I think this maybe important, since they have yet to show a book on this show without it somehow being relevant.
Are we supposed to think that anything "happened" between Henry Gale and Kate? I mean, when a man dresses you up like that.......Somehow I wonder if Sawyer will have to "fight for her honor".
Interesting that they sort of set up that these people are NOT part of the original Darma initiative......of course that came from Juliet, so are we to believe it?
I can't wait to see how they work together the "others" compound we saw last night with the "others" camp that they took Walt and Michael to. Two completely different extremes....one showing them completely in survival mode, and the other with every creature comfort.
I had figured out that Jack was underwater the minute that Henry Gale said "open that door and we all die". Question is, what to they need from Jack that Juliet saved him?
Ok...and how much did I want Jack's father to have slept with his wife?? LOL. Although, through last night's flashbacks, we saw that Jack may not have it all together quite as much as we have thought.
What do we think about the boy who helped Sawyer"escape"? Was he one of the original Tailies? Or was he one of the "others"? And what did they do to him? I was expecting a shot after they drug him off into the forest.
As usual....and episode of Lost that asks more questions....but what a better way to set up the season!

I was reading another board and someone alluded to the Stephen King book (which I believe was "Carrie") being some sort of clue, and the Petula Clark "Downtown" song being another clue. But then failed to explain!
I can't see any clues there, but perhaps I'm a bit slow today (need more coffee!).
It also implied that there was a framed photo of Hurley and Sawyer with NotHenryGale in Juliet's living room. I will have to verify that on DVR.
Have to go back and look for a picture now - after I just spent ten minutes trying to see what the hell book it was -- and for the record, my DVR isn't good enough to get it. All I could see was Stephen King written on the front, and couldn't see the spine at all. In fact, it looked like a PICTURE of King on the front. I think this was more of a shout out to King who has been writing in Entertainment Weekly about the show, and a jab at viewers who say it's "just science fiction, there's no metaphor."
Wendy got most of my questions but a couple of other things...
Did anyone notice the similarity in Juliet's line "It doesn't matter who we were, what matters is who we are" to Sarah's line "It doesn't matter who you are, what matters is who you're not." Very interesting...
What happened to the bears and shark? Were they released? Did the escape? If released, why?
What was that last exchange between Ben and Juliet about? There's a back story there I hope we find out about sooner rather than later.
What happened between Ben's "The next two weeks will be unpleasant" and Kate getting put into the cage?
Was blood TAKEN from them? Were they injected with something?
What did Jack hear over the speaker? Was it a hallucination? The echo of his father's line "let it go" there plays into the possible theory that the flashbacks are implanted - that their past lives as we're seeing them are not necessarily what really happened...the entire dossier on Jack's life also plays into that -- how could they know EVERYTHING about him???
And for the record -- I don't buy into the idea the writers are making this up as they go. They've done too good a job connecting the dots already for that to be the case. Yes, there are a ton of unanswered questions - but we wouldn't be watching if they answered everything, now would we? They may add details as they go, sure, but there is NO doubt in my mind that they know EXACTLY where this is going in the long run.
"Was blood TAKEN from them? Were they injected with something? "
We did get a sort of answer from Juliet abou that when she said "the drugs we gave you cause dehydration". Of course, again...that comes from Juliet...so how much do we believe her? Also...did Sawyer have a bandaid? I remember seeing Jack's and Kate's but not Sawyers.....
I love how something as small as a bandaid makes me ask questions and think about this show....LOL
"Well, last season some gay magazine complained there were no gay characters on Lost. Well, they got their wish. Probably not who they would have chosen, though."
Umm, I'm probably gonna feel incredibly stupid and slow, but who's gay? Did I miss something on the premiere?
Ohh! That's what the guy meant when he said she's not his type? Yup, I should feel slow. I swear I watched that and thought guess he goes for blondes...*slaps self* *feels incredibly stupid*
I should have watched the recaps. I knew for some reason Hurly wasn't there, but I couldn't remember what happened to him. Glad you guys reminded me earlier tonight.
The fact that not-Henry-Gale's name is Ben seemed to come with like a...revealing music. Has there been a Ben alluded to in another episode or something? I felt like it should mean something to me.
I love the song Downtown. If there's a clue in it, the only parts I can think of is:
"You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares"
or
"You may find somebody kind to help and understand you. Someone who is just like you and needs a gentle hand to guide them along."
Any thoughts?
Haven't the writers said often that they are not dead, so the purgatory idea can't work? (unless they're lying...)
And gah...I love Sawyer. This episode definitely indicated a direction I am pleased with. Heh, the joy in getting the fish biscuit and his face when he saw Kate.
And the first 5 minutes...a major idea I've held onto is that they knew that the crash was going to happen. I can't tell if that was the case in the first 5 minutes. It was ambivalent. On purpose, no doubt.
Okay, enough for now.

I HATED the first episode. Where was the hope? If there is no hope, why would we watch next week?

Finally have time to add some of my thoughts, so here ya go:
I immediately thought that they were alluding to Tom being gay when he said "you're not my type." But for some reason I don't think we're going to get too much into that. Even if he is gay, I don't see that storyline going anywhere.
wickedrentq, this was the first time that we've ever heard of a Ben on the show. But the name did seem like it should mean something. From what I've read, Ben and Juliet did have a relationship in the past.
I'm also thinking that a plane may have crashed here before. A few planes in fact. Ben knew what to do and who to send right away. Almost like this had become a routine for them.
Don't expect to see Desmond, Locke, Eko, Charlie, etc. this coming week either. Just the same people we saw this week, plus Jin, Sun, & Sayid. It will be a Jin/Sun flashback episode. The next week we'll return to the beach/hatch, where we'll see A LOT more of Desmond than we ever have.
