Posted: 1/15/13 at 7:27pmI guess I just never followed the sport enough to care that much about what he has done, said, etc. Thanks for the education.

They were engaged, IIRC, but never married. Oddly when they broke up that was when he really soured on me. He was being spotted with a lot of younger women like the Olsen twins among others and was always on the party circuit. He was doing this when he was posing for ads holding his young children.
I remember there seemed to be a three-man competition for a potential Lance Armstrong movie that had Jake Gyllenhaal, Matt Damon, and Matthew McConaughey competing for the role (I believe all three made personal overtures to Lance and all of them, McConaughey especially, were on friendly terms with him) but then the project evaporated. I think even a Hollywood exec. saw writing on the wall that this was bound to come out at some point.
That said, cycling is one of the most widely-drugged sport in the world- on par with track & field. I think there have been 5th place Tour de France cyclists who are now default 'winners' because the four cyclists who finished higher at the time but have been stripped after revealed doping.

I had a chance meeting with Lance Armstrong when the Tour de France came through the town in Southern France where I was staying. This was before the doping charges surfaced. We were seated at an outdoor cafe where the tiny tables were very close. I recognized him from all the articles I'd read about his surviving cancer. Also, an American accent really stands out in the Pyrenees. I helped him when the waiter didn't understand what he wanted.
We struck up a conversation and he impressed me as being rather arrogant and self-impressed. That said, I let the conversation die out and went back to the book I was reading. When all the doping charges emerged, I wasn't the least bit surprised.

Anyone who follows the Tour knows doping has been and is rampant. As much as Armstrong is to blame the testing officials associated with the Tour are even more at fault. The top official had publicly backed Armstrong's innocence instead of putting a stop to it all
...but pro cycling is a big money business in Europe.

This thread was worth reading if only for Addison's inspired coinage "acronymphomaniacs"...

Posted: 1/15/13 at 11:15pmI have 2 things to say. 1. If EVERY athlete was to be honest, there would be very few that haven't used PEDs. 2. The man has raised a ridiculous amount of money for cancer and that I support.

^^^ And do you think, therefore, that he should be given immunity/pardon/clemency for his transgressions?
Or are you just pointing out what you feel are mitigating facts?

I wish I could say that I am shocked. But, it does sound like this was something that was swept under the rug for as long as it could have been for the sake of money. It is true that pro cycling is a huge moneymaker in Europe and that Armstrong is the sports biggest star. His story helped keep the sport afloat and that was something that they didn't want to loose.
But, PEDs are rampant in sports these days. Look at recent voting for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Mark McGuier, Sosa et al were all up to be voted in to the Hall of Fame plus several others that were proven to never have taken steroids. Yet, they voted no one in steroids or not. So, that just goes to show you how badly this wole steroids thing has impacted sports.

Yeah, I even channel surfed a new Pete Rose "reality' show last nite. O M F G. So ****ing embarrassing (for a baseball player I really admired in my youth..."charlie hustle")
These pathetic has been jocks need to just go away. GEt on with your life. There's more to life than forever begging any which way to get into the HALL of FAME. There's a time to move on. They just don't get it.

"The man has raised a ridiculous amount of money for cancer and that I support."
I support those who raise money for cancer and are not greedy liars.
And I know this is a cynical statement, but I wonder how many celebs who donate money, do civic duties, take on a charity, etc. do it because it's in their nature, or because they were told by their people that it's what they should do. Yes, I know it's wonderful no matter whose idea it is, but in Armstrong's case, I don't know if it was done out of his own generosity and care for people who are needy or suggested by his handlers.

Here is some info about another liar and cheat and the good works he did. Does it mitigate the damage he did? I don't think so. Same w Armstrong. Worse in some ways.
Madoff was a prominent philanthropist who served on boards of nonprofit institutions, many of which entrusted his firm with their endowments. The collapse and freeze of his personal assets and those of his firm affected businesses, charities, and foundations around the world, including the Chais Family Foundation,[134] the Robert I. Lappin Charitable Foundation, the Picower Foundation, and the JEHT Foundation which were forced to close.Madoff donated approximately $6 million to lymphoma research after his son Andrew was diagnosed with the disease.[136] He and his wife gave over $230,000 to political causes since 1991, with the bulk going to the Democratic Party.
Madoff served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Sy Syms School of Business at Yeshiva University, and as Treasurer of its Board of Trustees. Madoff also served on the Board of New York City Center, a member of New York City's Cultural Institutions Group (CIG). He served on the executive council of the Wall Street division of the UJA Foundation of New York which declined to invest funds with him because of the conflict of interest.(LUCKY THEM!)
Madoff undertook charity work for the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation and made philanthropic gifts through the Madoff Family Foundation, a $19 million private foundation, which he managed along with his wife. They donated money to hospitals and theaters. The foundation has also contributed to many educational, cultural, and health charities, including those later forced to close because of Madoff's fraud.

A liar, a cheat, a bully. A typical winning-is-the-only-thing professional American athlete with sociopathology brought to its logical conclusion. He's attempting the Oprah reboot, the old way of getting the infamous second act in this country, but unfortunately the Oprah Moment has passed, Lance is several years too late.
There have always been a-holes and d-bags who hid behind philanthropy. The rubber bracelet community has lost its hero.

With apologies to Mr. Sondheim.
It's called athletes cheat.
It's called heroes lie.
It's called assholes live but your best friends die.
It's called people leave you and don't say why.
Okay, now you know.

Posted: 1/17/13 at 11:57pmI'm all over that word 'sorry'.[Actually did armstrong apologise?] People know they do wrong and are happy with it-until exposed-then cry-say they are 'sorry' and think everything goes away. Why do it on Oprah?--there has to be a commercial reason-shouldn't he be doing that in some court of law and be prosecuted?--if there had been a live audience they would have all been given a bicycle and he probably would have had a standing ovation as he sprays them all with champagne from the podium wearing yellow[the mark of a coward]--give me a break.
