WW - I remember Namo talking about how he enjoyed this in a theater with other people - perhaps that would have made a difference.

I'd go to a theater, if it wasn't for the families having their KFC dinner and talking/texting on their cell phones!

I was lucky - I saw it at a screening with our local film society. They have wonderful audience etiquette, but they are comfortable enough with each other to not be reserved in their responses.

As funny as I found this film, I found it even more serious. I wept when I saw it (which was only in a theatre, BTW).

I used to teach English in a university, and Steve Carrell's character was so REAL to me that I was actually taken aback. It was like someone reaching into my past. Eerie.

yeah, well, I didn't think it lived up to the hype either. Hardly any film does when I hear so much about it, and then finally see it. But I'm just saying I liked it very much.

It's funny how when something truly reaches you, and others appear dismissive, the hackles get raised - even subconsciously. When I was reading through that 'Oscar crimes' article earlier and came across the denigration of ORDINARY PEOPLE, I had an almost involuntary desire to hurt the author!

I'm just happy that there's enough art - in whatever form - to reach anyone who is open and willing.

I'm open and willing...

Just to add my 2 cents to the discussion –

It’s our life experiences that make us to react to art in different ways. It doesn’t matter what the media is – painting, music, dance, theatre, film, etc – it’s always going to touch us in different ways and different degrees and those differences are based on our past. A film like LMS can (obviously) strike some as false and totally unworthy of any praise, leave others barely affected, and touch others right in the heart and gut. Miss P said that the characters were so familiar to her that she felt herself being transported to her past. Others here thought the characters were one dimensional and totally unbelievable. Again – (I believe) it’s entirely based on their personal experiences.

Personally I thought the film was wonderful. The young man playing the brother (I’m sorry I don’t know his name) completely broke my heart. The grandfather’s death shocked me. (And for what it’s worth – I worked for 4 short months for an eye doctor. In that time I pre-tested approximately 150+ patients and found 2 who never knew they were color blind. Both were young men in high school.)

Now this could be a stretch, but the mute brother in the film reminded me a little of Bud Cort in Harold and Maude. They had a similar appearance, both had very little to say, and when they finally did explode, they sounded so much alike to me!! Of course this is a personal observance~

What does everyone think about the nomination going to Arkin over Carell?

I though they were both fantastic (as I thought the entire ensemble was), and Arkin was fantastic in the hotel room scene with Breslin. But I think Carell was just a step above Arkin.

I'm looking for Arkin and Breslin to upset Murphy and Hudson.

Although, in my perfect world, Jackie Earl Haley would win Supporting Actor and Adrianna Barraza would win Supporting Actress.

I adore this movie, and I think it really sucks that Steve Carell didn't get nominated. He was absolutely incredible in my opinion. I have an insane crush on him, and most of that is due to his talent.
