Paris is not done yet, don't forget!
Still the Paralympics to enjoy.
Who will light the Olympic flame at the LA opening ceremony?
Four years out, I predict Michael Phelps and Simone Biles.

Fun question..
I would like to see an athlete who participated in the 1984 Los Angeles games light the flame. And more, I would like to see the flame lighted together by two athletes, female and male. Come to mind are Nadia Comaneci and Bart Conner, both won gymnastics, and are a married couple.
Beyond that, perhaps:
Carl Lewis (Track and Field)
Mary Lou Retton (Gymnastics)
Michael Jordan (Basketball)
Nancy Hogshead-Makar (Swimming)
Greg Louganis (Diving/Springboard)
Thankfully baseball and softball will return after the 2024 Paris Olympics refused to have them. 2032 is also expected to keep baseball and softball.
Lacrosse will also debut in the 2028 games.
Boxing is on the way out too, I read, along with break-dancing. Cricket is on the way in.
Carl Lewis and Nadia Comaneci got a prime spot with the flame as it was on its way down the Seine this year, I think it will somebody else's turn for LA. Michael Johnson featured in the closing ceremony, maybe him? I think, being LA, "celebrity" will win out with the biggest names getting the job.
I wonder if the flame will return to the stadium, or be off-site like in Paris. Perhaps up with the Hollywood sign.
I'm already excited.
Wouldn't be surprised to see President Kamala Harris attending either the opening or closing ceremonies of LA28. After all, her roots are firmly planted in California soil. That would be sooo cool.
My understanding is that the head of state of the host country ALWAYS declares the Games officially open. 2028 will be no different! POTUS will be there for sure. Who that may be will be decided in November. Shiver.
Please, let's keep this thread clear of MAGA political talk. We have enough of that in other threads.
Okay, I understand that, this year's Games have been my escape... but arguably they have always been a part of world history both good and bad. Reflective of the times they took place in. Never fear, I have confidence that 2028 will be a happy place to be.
From Hitler...to Clinton... to Queen Elizabeth II. The Olympics have seen them all!
Breakdancing was a joke. Thank goodness it's not returning.
The century-old Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum has been called the "Greatest Stadium in the World". It was constructed to honor all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during WWI. It has been the site of the Opening Ceremonies of the LA Olympic Games in 1932, 1984 and now 2028. I hope to have a seat at this historic landmark during LA28. I believe, but am not certain, that the SoFi Stadium will also play a role in the Opening Ceremonies.

"I would so love to attend an Olympic opening ceremony. Bucket list. How can I make this happen? Do I need to be a competing athlete or invited VIP?"
I would check the official website of the games a couple of years before the event. My guess would be at that time they have some type of lottery system. Expect the price to be pretty steep if you were fortunate to get one. Then think about how crazy the price for hotels will be during that time. Good luck!!!
Just thinking... how great would it be to have not just the first female POTUS for the LA Games, but also the first female president of the IOC. A new one is to be chosen early next year, I think it is time for a woman.
It will probably be Sebastian Coe, though. Which is appropriate in a different way, I guess.
The LA28 Paralympic Handover is scheduled for September 8th.
