re: MAD MEN

C&P from my post in the "I Enjoy Being A Girl" thread:

Ohhh.. Mad Men ladies; forgot to tell you. I just picked up the August issue of Chicago magazine and there's an article written by the widow of the guy that Don Draper is based on. He was a Chicago ad man in the 50s and 60s and was well known in the industry. And his name...was Draper Daniels.
How cool is that?
Even cooler his widow was the 1st female VP in advertising. Peggy loves Don! :P

Draper Daniels! That's great!

re: MAD MEN

I knew that if anyone were to find out about Sal, it would be Don. And that it would basically be the same thing as no one knowing. If anyone can keep a secret and empathize with someone living a double life, it's Don. He'll protect him just as he protected Peggy. He'll never judge him or tell a soul.

Their conversation on the plane, when talking about Don's proposed tagline (and referencing Sal's secret) "Limit your exposure" was played just beautifully.

re: MAD MEN

Sal's look of complete fear right before Don mentioned the London Fog campaign...ugh...heartbreaking.

So, am I right in thinking that the newly canned Burt was Duck's replacement?

"

I know. It was such a great scene. I loved when he said, "We're going back to the office?" in disbelief. How horrible...he was certain Don was going to fire him after his discovery.

Good question (Burt)! I assumed the show was taking place relatively soon after we left off last season...maybe nine months later? Maybe Betty is pregnant with ANOTHER baby and she had the first one and we'll learn that it's a few years later?

re: MAD MEN

Great episode! Learned a little more about Don's past.
I loved Pete's comment about how he never gets what he wants. He said it like he was five! lol.

re: MAD MEN

I know. I love the character, though. I'm anxious to see the interaction between Pete and Peggy...I want to know what year it is, too! How do you recover from that kind of news, and go back to work with that person day after day? When we saw them last, they thought the world might (literally) be coming to an end, which was the only reason Pete confessed his love and Peggy confessed about the pregnancy and adoption.

He and Trudy seemed happy. So did Don and Betty. Maybe it's all surface.

re: MAD MEN

I'm guessing it's about 6 months from when we last saw them. Betty looks about 7 or 8 months pregnant. It didn't occur to me that it would be another pregnancy. hmmmm.

re: MAD MEN

I read a few weeks ago it was picking up almost nine months later, with Betty at the end of her pregnancy, so unless that was bad info, that's when I'm thinking it is.

re: MAD MEN

Yes, this season takes place in 1963. The finale last year took place during the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis..Oct. 1962. So...I would say this is approximately late spring/early summer of 63.

re: MAD MEN

Thanks for clarifying, Phyl and xx.

Loved when the Brit complained that the office was a "gynocracy." More like a Joanocracy. Adore that woman.

re: MAD MEN

Joan had said she was getting married at Christmas. I wonder if she is already married or if she is still planning for this year.

re: MAD MEN

Loved the scene with Peggy in the mirror.

Can anyone shed some light on the scene with Don watching the Maypole dance? Was she supposed to be inspiration for the "Patio" girl?

re: MAD MEN

Some wonderful moments last night (especially with Betty's father -- the best material) but I thought as a whole the episode was maddeningly unfocused. This season so little attention is paid to tracking these people -- what's happened to Pete's infertile wife, for example? And Peggy and the baby? Many will say it's Wiener's refusal to employ creaking soap opera techniques to drive his narrative, but I find the show too flacid at times, under-dramatized. We're too often asked to observe seemingly random events -- like Peggy's pick-up -- without any grounding or context. I remain riveted to the show, and certainly the British takeover of the agency is providing some harrowing opportunities to watch Don flounder.

I loved the season opener, once we got to Baltimore. I just wish the episodes would build, the way they did last season at the start with the brilliant sub plot about the comedian and his aggressive/voracious wife who was in the accident with Don. The show frankly needs more compellling incidents and fewer carefully observed pockets of behavior.

blue, I thought it had to do with the Patio ad also. I hated that he was wearing sunglasses in that scene. I wanted to see his eyes so bad!!

re: MAD MEN

It was a good Peggy episode. She's "one of the guys" now. And I guess it was cleared up...Joan married that jerk. Poor Joanie.

I also love the reference to Margaret Sterling getting married right after the JFK assassination...very clever.

I'm assuming the girl was Don's take on the "Patio" girl as well. What a silly name, Patio. I'm glad they decided to go with "Diet Pepsi".

re: MAD MEN

I don't think Don was thinking "Patio girl" at all, I think he was simply turned on by Sally's teacher and was eyeing her as a potential conquest. Hence the slow-motion trailing his fingers in the grass bit. He wasn't thinking business, he was thinking "sex!"
Sarcasm is an allergic reaction to stupid people.

re: MAD MEN

Roger Sterling is such a self-absorbed ass. While he was always selfish and full of himself, he had a charm about him and was fun to watch. Now I just see his mean, controlling side. Can he ever admit he's wrong? Why is his daughter's wedding all about him and his ego? Why should she be forced to have that homewrecker Jane at her wedding?

"I don't think Don was thinking "Patio girl" at all, I think he was simply turned on by Sally's teacher and was eyeing her as a potential conquest."

I disagree about viewing her as a potential conquest. I don't think he'd EVER go there (Sally's teacher). One thing he's good at is compartmentalizing.

re: MAD MEN

I cracked up after they sang and Peggy says, "....I am really high"

Maybe I was tired, but I found myself bored a lot during this episode.
#247

re: MAD MEN

I loved the episode. Between Pete dancing, Joan playing accordion and singing, Peggy "I am so high", Roger's wildly innappropriate black face, Don's story of relieving himself in car trunks, Betty's gorgeous dress...I can go on and on. I loved it.
#248

re: MAD MEN

clever, I'll agree that it wasn't the most exciting episode, but it had it's moments. I LOVED Pete and Trudy's dance number.

Don and Pete seemed pretty mortified at Roger in blackface while everyone else was entertained by it. It's interesting.

January Jones looked so beautiful.

WTF kind of book was Sally reading aloud to her grandpa? Did she say "licentiousness?" Come October she should read passages from "The Great Pumpkin" because she sounds exactly like Linus. Cute girl. I liked the way they resolved the situation with the missing five dollars, but I generally dislike most scenes at Casa Draper. It just brings me down. I love seeing slices of everyone else's home life, though (Peggy, Pete, Sal, etc.)

re: MAD MEN

There was something terribly unfocussed about last night's episode. There seemed to be too many cuts between story lines so that I never got involved enough in any of them. That was a shame as the story lines themselves were intense and interesting.

Sally was reading from Gibbons "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire"!

re: MAD MEN

Interesting. Just read on another forum that "Connie", the man Don meets behind the bar, was Conrad Hilton Sr.
