Another nice touch--Pete getting Clearasil on board! Remember when his father-in-law pulled his business from Sterling Cooper? It means Pete's marriage is in better shape now.

Anyone else notice that with Betty flying to Reno for her quickie divorce, that Sally and Bobby will be with Don and I assume Carla for the Christmas holiday? Now isn't that a special, what an awesome mom.
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

Alan Sepinwall (an unabashed champion of the series and one of the best TV critics in the business) reviews season 4 with some semi-SPOILERS:

Why does my DVR say Mad Men will tape from 10 to 10:55? That sounds weird..

AMC is apparently doing a clip of RUBICON from 10:55 until 11, and then doing an immediate encore of MAD MEN, as they did last season.
ETA: My bad - the RUBICON preview is from 10:55 to 11:56, followed by the encore of MAD MEN.
And as for MAD MEN - maybe it was my excess of expectations, but I thought it was awful. By the end of the episode, I didn't like anyone. Where are the individual personalities, the flashes of humor? This reminds me of 4th season LOST - has this become plot rather than character driven, too? Love this show but thought this episode was the weakest I've seen so far.

At the end of last season I thought Mad Men jumped the shark. I still think so.
The only thing heightened about the season premiere was the amount of profanity.
Don and the hooker...eeew...
Seriously, the only character that interests me is Sally Draper.

SPOILERS*******************
It just seemed to me that Weiner took almost every character in a direction inconsistent with the prior season, and it isn't entirely clear to me how much time has passed. It appears to be at least six months on the business side but less than that on the divorce side. And Don and the hooker scene bothered me a lot. If he gets any more unsympathetic, I won't give a damn about the series since he has always been the linch pin for me. And Sally Draper is very interesting - she had the wonderful episodes with her grandfather last year and now seems to be standing up to her mom. Nice touch. But it is beginning to feel like a soap opera. Hello, shark.

It's been a year, I think. Doesn't Don say it's a year later to the journalist at the very end?

He said 1 year at the end of the episode
"Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life. Define yourself"

Interesting to skip over the 1964 election (The Daisy ad, for example) but I guess since the firm is **new** that they were out of the loop. Henry Francis probably has nowhere near the clout he has because Rockefeller lost to Goldwater so hopefully that comes up.
I really like that guy who kept on doing 'John' and 'Marsha' with Peggy, if only because he seems subordinate to her which is interesting. I do think Don made a mistake being 'spiteful' against Peggy by keeping her out of the room with the clients. Her presence probably could have helped convincing those prudes over the bathing suit ad.
Sally's my personal favorite character and those scenes with her mother are just so effective and Betty just comes off so spoiled, especially since she finally gets what she ever wanted.
Don is in such a vicious circle. Child of a prostitute who is now has his own personal hooker to slap him around after a divorce.

Anyone watching?
Some beautiful work from Vincent Kartheiser last night. From his "I'm through auditioning" to his father-in-law to the heartbreaking look exchanged with Peggy at the end...just excellent.

Not as good as last week's but still a goody. Vincent is always good as Pete so I was not surprised. The woman who played Don's secretary was really good and a shame it appears she is going to that other job. Don, even in limited screen time, managed to sink to new depths. All she wanted was for you to write that letter of recommendation, Don. He's really boxing himself in intentionally and unintentionally, professionally and personally. I will say though, we went from just a little passed New Years to the end of February (I looked it up after the Malcolm X reference) in one episode yet it seemed like the issues between Don and his secretary were still fresh wounds.
I loved Peggy looking over into Don's office and her reaction to Pete's news sinking in.
Next week looks like the return of Betty drama.

Well, considering that last night's episode (8/22) had a story line about little Sally's masturbation, the use of I ENJOY BEING A GIRL over the closing credits was a stroke (no pun intended) of demented genius.

Let me first say the shot of Peggy doing circles on the Honda motorcycle in a closed studio was breathtaking. So mod.
Onto Sally, can you blame her for being into this guy?
I feel bad that she is a victim of telephone essentially with the neighbor and mother. The other girl was asleep and wasn't even awoken by her mother barging in or the television playing The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Yes, inappropriate to still do it in the presence of the other girl, but Sally never got to say her side of the story to either her mother or neighbor. I love that the child counselor kinda made it known she thinks Betty needs help too (considering she projects her own narcissism onto Sally's problems).

I have never seen this show, even though a dear friend, has a recurring role on it. I just got AMC, and it probably wasn't such a good idea to watch a show so completely out of context, but I watched it last night, and found it deadly dull, full of unlikeable people.

It really is not a show you can just jump into. Came into second season and was left confused a lot until I got hold of Season 1. A lot of backstory and character development/evolving (especially the lead character) through this series. Even the non-sequiturs on the the show later on emerge as important facts. Plus there were more fun characters in the show's inception no longer on. Still my favorite show, however.

Who's watching tonight??
In honor of MADMEN, I purchased a (circa 1960,) 12 lb. black General Electric Bell Telephone for the apt. and it works! Yay! You have to DIAL!! NO tech. My aim: to eventually have a totally retro apt. So far, Ebay fiberglass lamps, boomerang curtains, 1948 Heywood Wakefield furniture (coupla pieces). Wish I could afford every little objet d'art on that show.

This season has been so good. Peggy not being told about the lipstick on her teeth when she was making a major pitch, and a good one at that, was so cruel.
And Don was a friggin horndog tonight.

I miss some of the more surrealistic/symbolic episodes of past seasons...however, I have 1 question - what happened to peggy's baby storyline?
#322
Posted: 10/3/10 at 11:41pm
Gave the baby up for adoption. And she told Pete (btw, he's now a happy father after tonight's episode, though the pregnancy sounded painful for Trudy):

I thought Peggy's mother or sister is taking care of the Peggy's baby. They have visited the issue for a while, but I seem to remember this being the case no matter what she actually told Pete.
I could be wrong though.

Every week I say - please let this not be another episode where Don Draper sleeps with everything in a skirt. It is almost laughable now. Lots of other good story lines with interesting things happening keep this show from jumping the shark for me, but it is nowhere near as good as the first two seasons. (I didn't care for the third season either but Elisabeth Moss and several other actors on this program make it worth keeping up with, without my prior enthusiasm.)

Dr. Faye did tell Don he was probably going to get re-married within a year of her observation. I knew from that moment if she had a recurring role she would be one of the candidates. Megan's an interesting one but that went pretty fast.
re. Peggy pregnancy- I was definitely confused the first time around and thought that she gave the baby to her sister. Weiner did later confirm she gave the baby up for adoption.
I think The Suitcase episode was one of the best episodes the show ever had, and I think both Moss and Hamm need to send that episode to the Emmy committee.
