I think you needed this episode to show you whats been happening the past 14 months...Don is a "better" husband, Joan has moved on from Roger and is expecting a proposal, Pete and his wife are failing to have a baby, Betty got what she wants and is still not happy, Harry made up with his wife, Salvatore is either married or seeing a women, Don's new secretary is the girl from the operators room that had a crush on Salvatore,No one knows for sure that Peggy had a baby, and it looks like there is gonna be a shake up at Sterling/Cooper this year.

Do they re-air the episodes during the week? Is season 1 available on DVD?

violet72, that is a perfect summary of the first episode! And iflitifoat, I agree, the seeds were sown. Have they ever hit on the fact that Peggy is probably making the same amount of money as she was when she was Don's secretary? btw, I love Don and Peggy's relationship.

Peggy asked Don for (and got) a five dollar a week raise and shared office space, clever name.

I just want to know what happened with that baby!
Someone in the office obviously is in the know and helped make it possible for Peggy to have her job when she came back. My guess is Don or Joan (or, more likely, both of them are covering for her together). Don because he genuinely cares for her and would be sympathetic to the situation...he couldn't even acknowledge he really had a brother...maybe he felt he had to help Peggy when she psychologically couldn't bond or even admit that she gave birth (plus, he's been abandoned himself...his mom dying in childbirth). Joan because she is known for her discretion--and what a juicy thing to be able to hold over Peggy's head.

We all know that Joan is the one who really rules the roost there

Blueroses I think your right about Don knowing about the baby and he would be sympathetic to Peggy and if Joan knows it would be interesting....I can't wait to see if Pete finds out, at least we know it's Trudy that can't concieve

violet, I think Trudy's father is really going to start to get on his case. I don't know how much they knew about fertility issues in those days--not even sure if any testing was available. I think it would most likely be seen as a failure on the man's part. Pete is a jerk, but I'm not entirely unsympathetic to him in this situation. He felt totally emasculated when his wife asked his father for the apartment money. And her dad has said (on more than one occasion) that he sees it as an investment in his family, and that he expects 'dividends' in the form of grandchildren.

She gave birth in the final episode of the first season. We see her going into labor in the emergency room, not the actual delivery.

in the "Previously seen" clips they show a nurse carrying a bundle of joy away from the hospital bed.

That was in the final episode, too. The nurse wanted Peggy to feed her baby, but she looked away and wouldn't even acknowledge the child.

Colin Hanks has joined the cast of Mad Men? I did not know this. Does anyone know what kind of role it is?

I'm starting to wonder if they've lost their tempo on the show. It has an entirely different feel from the first season. I hope the don't make th TwinPeaksian error of trying too hard in season two to be what made them special in season one.
I'll be optimistic and think that this was another week of setting things up, but by the end of the hour, the dark and moody slow pans were starting to annoy me.
I'm a little nervous. I so want Mad Men to live up to its promise.

well we found out what happened to the baby (I think we should call him Pete jr)....Peggy is so sad....and I actually felt bad for Pete in the beginning and then the end where he showed up for the meeting I wanted to hit him...although they way he looked at Peggy, I felt so bad cause he couldn't talk to anyone about it(not even Trudy)....also is there a new war going to happen between Joan and Paul, he so posted her age and she deserved it.....the stuff between Don and Betty is so uncomfortable to watch....and I wish my dad taught me how to make cocktails when I was like 6 years old....something is building and I think by the end of the season there is def. going to come to a head

I agree. I thought Vincent Kartheiser (Pete) did some fine work tonight, though.
