re: MAD MEN

I do have to admit I let out a little "woo-hoo!" when she called him Don.
Back to in family adoptions, I guess it was common. A friend who was a couple of years older than me; found out when he was almost 18 that his aunt was his birth mother and that her brother and wife (who couldn't have children) raised him.

As far as fertility treatments they were most likely not covered under insurance thus very costly.

re: MAD MEN

Stunningly good episode (and did anyone notice? Written and directed by two women). The witholding of Peggy's interim story has proved to be a wise tactic, as each small revelation about her journey has new payoff in light of the present story. Yes, yes, that ending when she called him "Don" was masterful. And who would have ever seen the relationship between Bobbie and Peggy as story-determining? My only question: Don is suddenly on a very self-destructive path, post agency decline and personal crossroads. His behavior last night, while in character, was certainly even more eratic than before. Probably a good thing, but it felt slightly abrupt to me.

I questioned the fertility counseling as era-specific, too, but recalled that it's always been an option for wealthier folk. It moved into the mainstream in the mid-70s and beyond, as boomers learned they were less likely to produce than they imagined.

re: MAD MEN

The extent of fertility treatment in the sixties was probably who had the problem, what the problem was, and whether there was any chance at all of conceiving. There was probably very limited artificial insemination, and definitely no in vitro - that would have seemed like science fiction in those days!

Suellen - that makes more sense. But husband and I both heard fifty - must be sticker shock from the last time we filled up the car.

re: MAD MEN

Now that is funny because I thought I heard $20, and I thought that must be a huge tank!

re: MAD MEN

Anyone feeling the magic of season one is still missing? Last night felt like what soap writers call a "vertical" episode -- one that deepened the existing status quo of the story as much as moved it forward -- rather like a good song in a musical that amplifies a character's POV by coming at it differently. We saw Don's story from the POV of these fascinating women in transition, and I think that's what made it so intriguing. The show slowed down and covering only about 24-36 hours took a new look at key players via new folk. Perhaps I must take back my statement above about Don's self-destruction seeming abrupt. It was viewed more from Bobbie and Peggy (and his wife's ) points of view. He had to be very reactive in this episode, something he usually is not.

re: MAD MEN

I think Don's been self-destructive from day 1. His entire existance is a house of cards.

ALSO

Preggers sis raises a whole set of new ?????. Was it a pillow to fake it? does she lose her own baby? OR is that not, in fact, Peggy's baby we have been seeing this season? perhaps Peggy's baby was adopted elsewhere?

re: MAD MEN

Chev good questions...also I loved when Bobbi asked Don about his interests...and what about Rachel showing up...I think that is one of the reasons he left with Bobbi...also loved Don visiting Peggy in the hospital..again lets you see into both Peggy and Don. The "new" girl could be interesting. and Pete goes back to being a jerk...when he was talking to his wife about it being her fault I wanted to slap the crap out of him...tact is not in his vocabulary...can't wait for next week

re: MAD MEN

I liked this episode but I have to admit that the Peggy story line has become primary for me. I adore the Don story but it may have peaked with the secret identity reveal last season. When Rachel showed up, it just reinforced my fear that Don has become a serial adulterer which becomes boring. I would love to see him fall for someone he can't canoodle into bed.

re: MAD MEN

It occurred to me that Peggy's baby may have been given up for adoption and the child we assume is hers is actually her sister's baby. And the sister may just be rubbing Peggy's nose in it. We all assumed it was Peggy's child when the sister asked, "Aren't you even going to say goodbye to him?", and saw the baby in the crib. But nothing in the show has confirmed that assumption.

I'm really warming to the idea that Peggy's baby was given up for adoption and is out of the picture. It would be a well-structured twist in the story line, wouldn't it?

re: MAD MEN

Once I saw that Peggy's sister was pregnant, I assumed that she lost her baby and adopted Peggy's. The fact that her "own" child didn't live and Peggy's did just adds to her anger with Peggy.

OMG - this is beginning to sound like LOST.

I also noticed the number of writers and directors on this show who are women (assuming Robin is a woman).

re: MAD MEN

you all should go to the amc website and watch the sneak peak for next week and also they have inside season 2 snippets where they discuss what happened during the epsiode....it gives some interesting insight into it

re: MAD MEN

Great episode! I know I was whining earlier on this thread that I was confused with the Peggy storyline. But you guys were right. They are going to give it to us in bits and pieces! I should have known this writing staff wasn't going to let me down!

re: MAD MEN

I love January's long silver-taupe nails. but that is ALL I like about her look.

I think she just wanted to go "opposite" for sh*ts and giggles.

was this a casual event? they are both dressed way down.

The actress playing Bobbie has grown on me. Anyone else think of Anne Baxter, mid-career? The smile, the throaty laugh...

re: MAD MEN

wow...what an episode...so many things happened
- Pete cheated on Trudy...is it me or do you find it funny that Pete's sister in law is named Judy?
- Duck is off the wagon and he abandoned his dog
- Peggy is trying to be one of the boys but at the end when she looks at Pete she knows she will never be one of the boys
- Don has a reputation as a slut
- the one thing that made me feel bad was when he told Betty that he didn't like her swimsuit and the way she covered up
- this whole episode was about how people precieve that people fit into 2 categories....and can't be in both..it was interesting

I can't wait to see what Don's secratary does to piss off Joan next week

re: MAD MEN

I am a sucker. The dog abandonment upset me so much! Didn't care for the Bobbie Barrett character so I am not too disappointed that her part may be diminished.

re: MAD MEN

I just caught up on the last two episodes. Now I can read this thread again! Great episodes. Jon Hamm is so good. As much as I would like to see Michael C. Hall win, I think Hamm may win for best actor. I'm sorry, but are any other cast members nominated? I don't remember.
#123

re: MAD MEN

clever, I think John Slattery is nominated, too. Jon Hamm is indeed excellent--and I'd be happy for him if he won--but deep down I'm pulling for Dexter! re: MAD MEN

Finally last week we got a peek into Salvatore and Kitty's home. I'm sad for them both. Kitty adores Sal, and he'd never hurt her on purpose. I don't know that Kitty thinks he's gay, but when it comes to their marriage, she sure knows something is off.

re: MAD MEN

I think the best part of last weeks episode was when Betty got sick all over Don's new car. While I don't like Betty very much, Don is a jerk.

re: MAD MEN

I was so happy that Don got called out at the end of the episode...Betty needs to have an affair, time for a little revenge
