MTV's "Jersey Shore"

Is anyone watching this train wreck of a show?? A show where people proudly refer to themselves as Guidos and Guidettes? Where a guy has given himself the nickname "The Situation" in reference to his rocking abs? These kids are tragic.

After watching one episode, I feel the need to shower immediately.

So, they've finally done it. They've created a reality show that's too crass for danmag.

OK, who had December 2009 in the pool?

re: MTV's 'Jersey Shore'

I don't watch the show, and don't plan to, but are the guidos and guidettes 'bennies'?

Though it's origin is in dispute, 'benny' is a derogatory term used by Jersey Shore locals to refer to folks (usually with Italian-American background) from NY or northern NJ who spend their summers 'down the shore'.

re: MTV's 'Jersey Shore'

You've got the bennies and the shoobies. I'd only heard the shoobie term for the first time a couple years ago.

I lived too far south when I was in Jersey. We had the shoobies, not the bennies. re: MTV's 'Jersey Shore'

re: MTV's 'Jersey Shore'

Hey there Girly!!! I am NOT a shoobie! Shoobies are the day trippers that lay on the beach on bedspreads and try to hide from the beach badge checkers!

re: MTV's 'Jersey Shore'

Bennies are Northern renters and Shoobies are Southern renters, from NYC and Philly respectively.

The husband and I spent a summer in Seaside, where this is filmed (actually we were in Seaside Heights Park, thank you very much).

Driving back to the city we passed through our present hometown and before the summer was out we had a shore house.

re: MTV's 'Jersey Shore'

I still go to the shore every summer, but I stay in Long Branch.

I wonder what the terminology is for my aunt and uncle, who spend 1/2 year at the shore and the other half in FL. I know I'm a Bennie, though.

Shoobies were so named because they brought their lunches in shoe boxes, if I remember my South Jersey lore correctly.

"Shoobies were so named because they brought their lunches in shoe boxes, if I remember my South Jersey lore correctly."

I believe the shoe box lunch origin is correct, but I think it refers to lunches provided on trains from Philly to the shore.

re: MTV's 'Jersey Shore'

I spent every summer of my growing up years in Seaside Heights. My family had a bungalow there and that's how we escaped the city every summer after school finished. I worked on the boardwalk since I was 11 years old until I graduated college. I was called a Benny even from my cousins who grew up down the Jersey shore. re: MTV's 'Jersey Shore'

Here is what seems to be the reasons why we are called Bennys. I never heard of shoobie.

Benny (Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark, New York acronym?)
A visitor to the New Jersey shore is called a "benny." This may come from the "benefit" of New Jersey's shore in the summer. It may also come from the "benjamins" (money) that the visitors bring to the shore.

Most people think that "benny" is an acronym for the luggage tags that the visitors got on the trains that took them to the shore. Supposedly, the tags read "BNENY" or "BENNY" for the towns of Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark, and New York. Sometimes Bergen and Essex are suggested for the towns in this acronym.

No one knows for sure, but the best summary was given by Ben (not Benny) Zimmer of the American Dialect Society (see below).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benny
Benny is a derogatory term used by residents of Jersey Shore towns for tourists that visit each summer. Locals blame bennys for bumper to bumper traffic on the Garden State Parkway and in the shore communities. They think that bennys hog parking spaces and take over sand space. The term 'benny' is used mainly in Monmouth County and Ocean County. In Atlantic County and Cape May County, the term shoobie is mainly used. 'Benny', like 'shoobie', dates from the era just after the Second World War and refers to members of the Jewish working class from New York City and northern New Jersey who invaded the resorts in large enough numbers that their speech patterns and way of dress made them quite noticeable.

While the term is often said to be an acronym for the cities they come from, namely: Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark, and New York, it is possible that 'benny' comes from Benjamin, a first name once fairly common among members of the Jewish faith (or at least it was presumed to be so).[citation needed] Over time the term came to be applied to daytrippers of all ethnicities. Word-Detective.com claims the "benny" label may trace its origins to a beach umbrella renter whose goods (and his presumably out-of-town customers) were marked with his name--Benny.

re: MTV's 'Jersey Shore'

My grandparents lived in Bryn Mawr but spent their summers in Wildwood Crest and eventually moved down there year 'round. We would spend about a week there every summer. Does that make me a "shoobie"?
