The reviews for Madonna's new film are coming out and are mixed to say the least, some very positive, some mixed, some bad. Lets be honest she was always going to divide critics. Here are the first batch

SPOILERS
I went to a sneak of the film this summer.
It is not a bad film, not a great film. The overall feelings are:
1. Madonna is not a bad director. She did not embarrass herself with this undertaking. There is flow, coherence, and competence.
2. The film contains many elements from THE KING'S SPEECH unavoidably
3. The film was overly cut; perhaps based on her work with MTV videos over the years? There are two plots within the film and there are many edits as you jump between past and present, sometimes preventing scenes from developing
4. The overall look of the film is quite sophisticated but the colors and lighting can be a bit chilly and dull
5. the acting was good but no one really set the film on fire actingwise due to a script that is sort of boring
I think the bottom line is that it will play the art house circuit; Madonna should pursue a career as a film director.

She looks a cross between Debbie Harry and Christina Applegate.
Is that a special Kaballah cross she has there?

She looks a little Mae Westy to me.
Mae Midwest, maybe?

By looking at the most negative of those reviews, I have a feeling she will get criticized for being who she is, her aesthetic, and her romanticism.
I imagine a situation like Tom Ford's debut. It was an accomplished and moving film. Was it over-designed? Absolutely. Then again, isn't every one of Ridley Scott's films? But the critics only frame of reference for Ford was his fashion career. So, that's all they could see. "Clothes, pretty. Actors, pretty. Oh he must not have done anything. The actors directed the themselves and the camera just happen to catch it. Oh, he adapted it? Yeah, whatever." And, as a director, I watched the film and thought, He gets it. He absolutely gets it. And he's telling this story in the only aesthetic and vision he knows. But that aesthetic is the opposite of the common film critic's.
So, for Madonna, I imagine more remarks about the cinematography being like a music video (nevermind her videos were often inspired by paintings, photography or classic film) and the acting being good in spite of her as opposed to because of her.
I haven't seen the film, so I can't say yet. But I just hate when new artists are dismissed for bringing along their voice.

Brick i agree, it would seem even some of the critics are saying she will be unfairly judged, she has to have known that, hell the world has to have known that. Some more positive words about the movie came out today which is good.
The Music Video thing is purely because she is a pop star. I think some of the critics as well were expecting a deep bio pic, thats what's is coming through in many of the reviews. Madonna said this was always intended to be a film about Romance, giving up everything for love etc, it was never meant to be an historical epic.
My co producer who's in Venice at the moment promoting something else saw the 2nd screening last night and loved it, said its a bit shallow at times but as a sweeping romance it works. I look forward to seeing it.
Also that picture is scary, luckily she looked far far better on the red carpet last night

ah. the vultures are out as usual ragging on someone who has dominated the music industry for 30 years. It's tough to see a woman in power. Tougher to watch her age. Tougher to celebrate all the successes she has had in her lifetime.
So it's easier to trash her. damn vultures. at least she's DOING something with her life and continues to challenge herself. Not much to say for the vultures.

As a matter of fact, I am saving all my money to buy myself an orphanage and all the objects in it, including orphans, because I like to give back.
Recently I wrote a poem describing how I came into my selflessness:
When I was totally young
Nothing really mattered to me
But making myself happy
I was the number one
Now that I am grown
Everything's changed
I'll never be the same
The minute I get some free time
Nothing really matters
Love is all we need
Everything I give you
Comes with a receipt
Looking at my life
It's very clear to me
I lived so selfishly
I was the only one
I multitask
All the time
And will squeeze in others soon

I'm wallowing in positivity. Kabbalah has taught me so much and my rabbi says I am in the upper percentile of Kabbalah students and one of the things I learned was positivity. Not only have I learned that all the money in the world is meaningless, I have also learned it wouldn't be helpful to give all my money away, THAT'S how meaningless money is, so I'll just hang onto mine for the hell of it not because it has any meaning, the only things that have meaning are family and also love. Also, William Orbit is meaningful. He helped me so much with my spiritual album that it's time to revisit it and him. Always forward thinking, never looking back.
Namaste. Pilates.
